I was wondering if any of you volunteer or donate money regularly whether that's annually, bi-annually, monthly, weekly, etc. And what do you volunteer/donate money for? And do any of you volunteer or donate time or money to charities or organizations that help transgendered people? And if so which ones?

Yes, to a number of organizations. Thinking locally and acting globally, a couple of my top charities are the Trustees of Reservations and the Sudbury Valley Trustees in Massachusetts, who both do wonderful work in preserving natural areas in this highly industrialized state.

While I no longer attend Mass regularly, I practically grew up in church (Irish Catholic, so it's the law), from altar boy to high school. Now they have me on speed-dial for moving, lifting, anything where they need a truck and/or a strong back...I always moan and complain to myself about it, but when the job is done, I feel pretty damn good about myself-they're quite tricky that way.

I do not deal with United Way.I once participated in our work campaign for United Way,then I saw the salaries of some of the higher ups and the CEo of that organization. It is fraudulent to call United Way a charity.

Almost every charity has management who get good salaries - they get the good salaries usually because they are good at what they do and are able to raise more money than somebody with good intentions but no skills.

I have a transsexual friend who is a professional fund raiser for the Catholic Church... :-)

She works as a boy, and only God knows how she's able to pass (as a guy).

And no, I don't donate regularly to anybody. I occasionally try to help somebody out a little.

I've offered on several occasions to finance local trans activism efforts into the 4 figures, only to be rebuffed by the TS "I'm a victim" crowd at the GLBT Center, because I'm a whore, and my money's not good enough for them.

And I tried to hire a TS housekeeper last year, but couldn't find anyone I could trust to not rob me blind, or capable of showing up, much less on time. So we have a really great GG from the Phillippeans who's married to one of the guards at our complex. (And I pay her more than he makes...)

So most of my charity involves getting my partner through college so maybe she doesn't have to be a whore and die an early death in the gutter, like so many others.

Sigh,
TS Jamie :-)

I get endless solicitations on phone, snail mail, email but I decided years back to make my life simple and chose two charities with no particular political agenda and extremely worthy causes. I recommend these if you
are fortunate enough to be in the position of giving.
recognized and sanctioned by the IRS, of course.

I give where and when I can. The last (inter)national charity I gave to consistently was Save The Children. I chose them because they had the lowest administrative overhead of all the charities that supposedly aided children. Before that, I use to have a deduction taken out of my check for The United Way, but like a poster mentioned upstream, I pulled my support once their obscene CEO salaries were made public a few years back.

No and never. The only donation I give is a piece of my mind. You can take that to the bank.

I donate to the American Cancer Society (I was an ACS fellow); Jerry Lewis' MDS; alumni associations; Roswell Park Memorial Institute; and recently, to Louisiana State University to help them rebuild after Katrina. I also donate to the US Shooting team.

My only recent volunteer work was with the Calif Science Foundation or some such name (judge at a science fair). Past activities had been in mobile clinic work.

I was a volunteer Fire Fighter! When I lived in Key West I was on the Stock Island Fire Dept. I'd love to do that again sometime.

We had a real variety. From waterfront homes to trailer parks to commercial and yacht harbors, the electric and desalinization plant, the hospital and community college.

The best part was I got to have lights and a siren on my car!

Giggle,
TS Jamie :-)
