View Full Version : Favorite Stand-up Comedian

Have you ever noticed ...

I was watching some old Richard Pryor and George Carlin and they had me rolling on the floor laughing ... even having seen them lots of times before.

Got me thinking of who are my favorite stand-ups but the list kept growing from the obvious to the not-so obvious. I tried to narrow the list to the top five - that was tough. Had to also break up the list to include those during the last 25 years.

Take the poll and if there is one that you believe is worthy and not on the list please add a comment. I tried to keep the poll list as diverse as possible.

Some favorites not on the short list:
Sam Kinison
Steve Martin
Gary Shandling
Jackie Mason
Rodney Dangerfield
Cheech and Chong
Redd Foxx
Lewis Black
Dave Chapelle
Sarah Silverman
Steven Wright
Ellen DeGeneres
Carlos Mencia
Andrew Dice Clay

The list is long ... effen long.

I LOVE TO LAUGH

Richard Pryor by a mile. I was too young to get him when I first had seen him.

Recently though I have watched three or four of his shows and was blown away by his pure honesty and story telling skills. In one of the shows he done a routine about going into the woods, it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen and heard, and I say seen because allot of his comedy is so visual!

His facial expressions are amazing and the interaction he has with the audience is fantastic.

Apart from him Peter Kay is great!

Yes he does and this bit from 1977 is unique and edgy. Do you get it? Make sure you let it play through till the mid-part.

Thank you for the link. I am actually too young to have seen Kaufman in his prime, I know of him due to the Milos Forman movie "Man on the Moon". He definitley was great!

Gotta love Margaret Cho (Bonus points because she and TW are twins separated at birth  ).

And her bits about her mother: "Are you gayyyyyy? If you are gay, that's OK. It's OK to be gay......If you are gay, I going to kill myself!"

Quinn, I gotta agree with you on Bill Burr. I had to pull over once on Route 80 I was laughing so hard listening to his diarhea routine.

The guy's funny as hell and has a huge set on him. Have you seen the video of his stand-up in Philly – when he went off on the audience after they started booing comedians off of the stage? I've been a fan of his for a long time, but that sealed the deal so far his status among my favorites is concerned.

Yes, that was funny, especially when he went off on the piss smelling subway system in Philly and this city's god-like worship of Rocky. And it's so true.

I gotta agree with Quinn. I'd add Dennis Leary and Richard Pryor also. Jimmy Norton is a classic. Below are links to Bill Burrs perfomance in Philly. As background, two previous comedians had cut short their performance due to booing, one was a Philly comedian. Bill's from Boston.

In this order:

Dave Attell
Funniest guy to me now.
"I see this girl at a bar, I notice she has a black eye. I'm thinking, "great, she doesn't listen."

"People are so defensive. I offered a girl a tic-tac once, she said, "oh do you think I need one? Is my breath bad, do I need one?". I'm just trying to be nice, if I was gonna give you something you need it would be moustache wax and a tshirt that says "one cock at a time".

Richard Pryor
He was hysterical, funniest comedian during his prime.

Woody Allen
As a young comedian I thought he was the funniest, most original comic of his times. I loved how he exaggerated his insecurities and failings with women. His advice to young comedians: "Don't hide behind your jokes."

Used to listen to Richard Pryor a long time ago and thought he was hilarious, but it wasn't til recently I truly appreciated his comic GENIUS.
I love the style that Mitch Hedberg had--- his stuff cracks me up, wish there was more of it. Lisa Lampanelli is sooo funny, she needs some new shit, though.
But absolutely, positively, the funniest person I ever saw live was Chris Tucker!!! He was the funniest man alive til his ol' lady changed him.

Kathy Griffin is hilarious. Maybe just for people who live in LA and work around the show biz. I am not gay.

No Yakov Smirnoff? For shame! Every time he says "What a country" I laugh so hard I shit my pants. Those jokes about how much Brezhnev drinks are priceless.

Look how Yakov has all off these Missouri farmers eating out of the palm of his hand. They probably don't even know he's a Jew and that the USSR is no more.

If I had to pick from that bunch, I'd say George Carlin. Not sure how George Lopez would fit into the list. I've never found Seinfeld funny and still don't.

The gem that's not on the list is Lisa Lampanelli. She usually closes the Comedy Central Celebrity Roasts and she is hilarious, not to mention quite vulgar.

Hi xrey,

I really like the 'Cos, he has a nice family style of comedy. No swearing, no vulgarity, no racism or discrimination. He's a class act.

I chose George Carlin because he was ironic, and he discussed things in a very particular way.
Yes, he used vulgar words, sometimes. But he was funny

I liked his, Occupation: Foole bit. He would add the finale 'e' on job applications just to piss them off. lol

Here's the whole album.
youtube.com/watch?v=55pfcmUzGhw
As he got older, he became really cynical and FUNNY with it.

I would really like Chris Rock and many others if they didn't frikken cuss so gawd DANG much and discriminate.

I never found Seinfeld funny, at all. The guy never made me laugh. I never understood what was so funny.
I used to watched the Seinfeld show and never busted a gut laughing.
