That's Gender Identity Disorder.

And yes many TS's are on disability. In San Diego it's about 38% according to a study done in 2003. It's because many, many TS's attempt suicide and have long term drug addictions and are unable to hold a job, and others have AID's.

And I know a LOT of TS hookers who draw disability and work too. Your tax dollars at work.

Some insurance programs will pay for hormones. Kaiser in particular. But only a few company programs cover SRS. Notable is the City of San Francisco - but good luck getting a job as a pre-op TS, unless you get elected mayor.

Sigh,
TS Jamie :-)

BCBS is generally fairly cooperative as well when it comes to covering HRT in HMO/PPO's.

Its really not THAT hard to get hrt covered if you have a decent plan, especially if your doctor is willing to be creative in diagnosis (for instance "hormone imbalance")

Some insurance programs do require you use endos and not gp's for it to be covered btw. afaik bcbs isnt one of them.

Hmmmm... A syndrome for everybody & everything. I'm tired of working. Sounds like a good retirement plan. How do I find a shyster shrink that can make up a personalized diagnosis for me & get me into a program?

TS Jamie :-)

As I said in another thread GID is listed as a mental disorder in the mental health bible, the DSM-IV. So this enables the goverment to pay for treatment of the disorder for people eligible for goverment medical care.

Jamie, I really don't understand why you say things
like " but good luck getting a job as a pre-op TS,
unless you get elected mayor. " It's such a defeatist
attitude.

I have a job, one of the regulars at my work is a
20 something pre-op girl who just transitioned and
is working in IT for local hospital, though I think she
is looking for something else. Another regular is
actually a counsellor at The Centre here in NYC.

I'm not saying it's easy, I took a job as a busgirl
when I came to NYC because I needed work, but it
is not impossible. TS women just have to work
twice as hard as GG's who already work twice as
hard as men to get to the same place. (Guys, save
the comments for now please, this isn't a thread
about sexism or the "priviledges" that women have).

as well- the AIDS remark was a bit ignorant
as I am sure they have dissability because they have HIV

I think GID and not wanting to work is WAAAYYYY different, and its better that people get hormones from a doctor than from the coke dealer [if you live in ATL, there is a dude who sells coke and hormones]. THats why there is such a big blackmarket for 'mones. Not everyone can get it.

Nobody said that there is a free ts welfare office that only ts's can get service, that includes hormones which are $2500 a vial and it comes out of taxpayer dollars, its jus that a girl gets her insurance to pay for it. Insurance that Im sure she pays for through her job. It is what it is

To be perfectly honest, it SHOULD.

GID is a treatable condition, by HRT (which covers menapausal women, of course) and SRS. The only reason they get away with not covering it is due to assholes like the Doc in that other thread venting his sexual frustration as a legimatized excuse for the corporations.

It still blows my mind every day that GID isn't, globally, treated as a standard condition, diagnosed at youth, covered by insurance, as a standard condition and treated during adolescence, therefore letting these girls live their lives as close to GG's as they deserve to be able to.

It's really that simple, but people just thrown them at the wolves, left and right. :x

And I have social phobia disorder because I feel my muscles are not large enough and so I'm embarrassed; so it's time the government pay for my anabolic steroids so I can function and get off disability.

You aren't a doctor if you made such a statement like that are really aren't aware of how any of this works. Read up, say, for a few years, after you know how social phobias have zero relation to body dysmorphic disorders which have zero relation to transsexualism, which is no longer even identified as a "disorder" in the EU.

Look, I understand you took a huge risk and were completely betrayed, but let it go and take it as it is. You were ripped off by a whore, and that doesn't mean all girls are rotten people.

Ever think you might have NOT been ripped off had that girl been able to have her hormones covered by insurance and had she not been LEGALLY discriminated against by every job she applied for?

You do realize that the vast majority of transitioning girls will first be legally fired, then when they try to find other work, hired by NO ONE from McDonalds to fortune 500 companies because there's no laws protecting themselves from such a thing, right?

So, even if they wanted to work hard for it, and pay for it all out of pocket, they can't, because of people like you.

So, essentially people with YOUR attitude are the root cause for why you were robbed!

Ironic, isn't it?

You are a wuss and need to lift some weights. Anabolic steroids will not do shit for you if you are not consistantly working out hard.

I'm sorry - not meaning to disrespect any transperson who works at whatever job. If they are happy, that's what matters.

But I wonder just how many pre-op TS's have been hired by the City of SF since their insurance plan went into effect. And of those (zero??) how many got their SRS?

Unfortunately the vast majority of transsexuals are forced into low wage jobs. Some are able to work into mid-level social service jobs or health care, and a few more in IT work. Very few get beyond that. I know only one TS woman here in SD who owns a company with several employees.

Most TS's who have jobs that pay in the median wage range ($67,000.00 in San Diego) are older people who transitioned in place with a progressive company or school.

Every trans person I know who did not hold a degreed position with a major company lost their job within a few months of transition and I don't personally know of any who were able to get another comperable position.

I'm financing Jessica's BS degree in Computer Science so she has a chance to earn a decent living eventually. IF she can get hired.

But according to a study done here in San Deigo in 2004 36% of TS's earn under $10,000 a year and 57% earn under $20,000. Only 4% reported income over $100,000. So it's an uphill battle.

Hugs,
TS Jamie :-)

Sure honey, so do I. But the fact remains that an escort or porn star can make more in a month than most of the TS community will in a year.

And didn't mean to be politically incorrect. But here in CA if you have AIDS, (not just HIV) you can get disability. I'm not saying that's bad. In CA they apparently make a distinction in awarding disability. There are lots of people with HIV who are not disabled.

Hugs,
TS Jamie :-)

First of all, my comment was called SARCASM AND WAS NOT MEANT TO BE CLINICALLY ACCURATE

And until you go to medical school you will realize that the etiologies and origins of phobias including a social phobia are many. One can lead to the other.

So don't give me your uneducated psycobabble

Otherwise, kiss my "tri-sexual" ass. You know nothing about me. I'm not so fucked up that I have to go out and pay someone to have sex with me. I do fine on my own in the real world. While I delve into the kinky and fetish world - I do so in a normal way - outside the realm of the illegal world of ""escorts""

"poor poor me, protect me from all evil in the world"

Yes, it IS ironic, and double ironic since i've never visited a prostitute in my life (you, who posted about it and now are claiming, otherwise).

Look man, I know that situation sucked, but you've got to learn to just roll up your sleeves and move on..
