"Best" album cover is too broad of a question. Personally I really liked the Coop devil girl ones for Lords Of Acid. If the question was "Freakiest Album Cover", I'd have to go with Black Sabbath's first album. That thing use to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid. The old house, the creepy woods, and that strange looking woman just standing there. Freaky.

Interesting topic, though.

Alright, I've been thinking about this all morning. I think the "best" album cover would honestly be impossible to identify. I've narrowed things down to a criteria of: 1) cover art that perfectly conveys the general concept of the album, 2) a powerful and effective picture on it's own merits, and 3) something which has particular impact considering the current state of world events.

I might be over thinking this a bit, but that seems like a pretty good check list. I suppose a person could pick a Steve Miller Band cover because they really like unicorns, or something, but I don't.

This would be my choice. It's hard to ignore the impact of this cover, and it's a good album:

Good one! One has to have the vinyl to appreciate that picture; it's not the same with the CD.

Pretty much all of The Ohio Players' albums were cool. Their ones with Westbound Records (Pain, Pleasure, Ecstasy) are great if you're into Sado-Masochism.

Below are a few album covers that give me a chuckle or two.

Allso U2 has few good ones, specially Joshua Tree's cover but I really enjoy Anton Corbijn's photographs so maybe there's a reason.

Front 242 - Tyranny For You: One of the defining albums of my formative years. They made the image by using photographs of one of their synth players in a bathtub filled with ice water.

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights: If the apocalypse had a soundtrack, this would be it.

Front Line Assembly - Tactical Neural Implant: I still want to someday play this album while watching Robocop to see if they synch up in any meaningful way.

One that was my favorite as a child... the album cover flipped open, and the inside had a larger, zoomed-out version of the old, early computer-generated radar image of a hurricane that you see on the TV there. Very 80's. Very cool. Wish I could find a picture of that as well, but my search turned up nothing.

MAYHEM IS INSANE. I learned about their band's history, well, ending. Norwegians. The singer, Dead, shot himself and the guitarist went and bought a disposable camera and the picture was leaked, on the cover of their live album. Dead was only 22. They lived in a forest cabin or something. He died a few days before my birth date. He said sorry for firing the weapon indoors.

Guitarist made stew with Dead's brain and necklace out of his skull frags. Bass player (YEAH) stabbed the guitarist and goes to jail, he still makes records in jail. Drummer is still in the band.

Mayhem´s history is full of controversies. Like any other Norwegian crappy black metal band, Mayhem gained popularity throughout their murder cases. Their later "vocalist" Euronymous was stabbed to death by that nazi crackhead Varg Vikernes (Burzum). That Mayhem cover doesn´t impress me.

This is an example of creative art cover:
