Hm tough question, but I'd say Kill Em All (Hit the Lights, Four Horsemen, Whiplash, Pulling Teeth, they all rock hard) or Ride the Lightning (Title Track, Fade to Black, For Whom the Bell Tolls, totally kick ass)

8) ride the lightning or muppets depends which day it is ... justice would have been great but the production is shit its was 1988 & sounds even worse in 2007, Newsted bass is non existent & lars drums sound like buiscuit tins, funnily st. anger suffers from the same problem (lars drum sound)

I lay the blame on Newsted as he is a douche-fag. I still like the album, but it happens to be my least favorite (Aside from St Anger, which I choose to pretend doesn't even exist, as do most radio stations that play Metallica.)

Dunno, but I fee lthey've been downhill since Black.

And I lost faith in them since Garage Inc.......which was playing in a hillbilly country bar I stopped by when I had to call to get a tow truck.......songs from that album wear on the jukebox as I called.....should have put a "b" in that album title.

So, yes.......they might have been good at one time, but that was long ago.

Justice. They were a great live band before Lars became a bitch.

I agree with this. Slight edge to Justice. Love "One," "Harvester of Sorrow" and "To Live is to Die." 8)

i guess ill have to go with kill em all. if this was liek 15 years ago id be all over metallica but over tiem i realized how mediocre compared to a lot of other thrash bands at the time. now i think they just got lucky, the right place at the right time

I was never much of a fan, then I saw their documentary, (of course they were past their prime), the singer and Lars seemed very pompous.

Its a disgusting example of what a band can turn into.

Shut up, dude. :D

The Black Album was their first crappy work. Their best album is Master of Puppets but shares the place with Ride the Lightning and Justice For All. Kill Žem All is a real Speed Metal masterpiece.

Lars even shouted shut up to the crowd at an awards show when Stern appeared and started having fun.....what an ass.

Hence why I call him Lars Ulcer.

He said file sharing's bad.....but I remember when he and the boys were in a garage giving away their music on cassette....so people will buy their crappy tshirts XD

ive alwasy maintained that Load and Re-load were good albums...they just weren't metallica albums. the songs were well written and by any other band it would have been a pretty good couple records but they definitely weren't up to metallicas standards and then they came out with the movie that made em look really soft and then a very very half-hearted attempt to return to form on S.t Anger which a) has the worst snare drum sound i've ever hard and b) to me reeks of false anger like "they were tryin to say ooh look were still as pissed off as we were20 years ago....well its pretty hard to be as pissed as you were when you were 20 when your 40 and have multi millions. that said ill check out the new record whenever its done, hopefully rick rubin lit a fire or something but goddammit metallica you're runnin out of strikes

Well, luckily from what I've heard, at concerts they still perform like they aswalys did, and play mostly old(good) stuff

In Justice.

St Anger is a joke. Once Newstead left it was all over for these guys because in the end he was the only one in the band that was a fan of their true sound....that's why he joined them. It's all over for the new sensitive Metallica.

On a differnet note Iron Maiden is still cranking out some awesome albums.

Master of Puppets easily. Although Newstead was and is a good bass player, Cliff came out with some moments of beauty such as the bass solo in Orion and I'm sure he contributes the truly musical moments which are lacking from later recordings. For me they've never matched the instrumental section in the middle of the title track.

I can't understand the plaudits for ..And Justice for All, it's an overlong muffled mush. 'One' is a pale shadow of the previous balladish songs -Sanatorium and Fade to Black and marks the time they sold out and did a promo video after bragging about how they'd never do a thing like that for years!

St Anger is rightly slated. Anyone who saw the documentary would realise you can't write songs by committee. During recording sessions Kirk should be locked in a room with his comic books and only allowed out to do his noodling solos!

Ride the Lightning and then Master of Puppets. These are two of the greatest metal albums of all time. And Justice for All was really great, but they just took a total nosedive after with the rest of the crap they produced.

Load is my favorite. I love the weird blues undertones and the meloncholy vibes. Untill It Sleeps is terrific.

I like anything before the Black album where they met producer Bob Rock and he turned them into CRAP and they went all commercial.

But what really turned me off Metallica was their fight with Napster. I remember going to a concert here in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens where they actually had a "recording section" set up for people who bought those specific tickets to bring cameras, cam corders, and audio recorders to tape the show. Then they release the Black album, get some cross over success from people who never bought their stuff before, they start making more money, and become major sell-outs.

I think Jason Newsted said it best when he left Metallica: "When you leave Metallica, you're not leaving a band, you're leaving a CORPORATION!".

And Justice for All, it is one of the greatest albums ever made. I hate St Anger and the documentary Some kind of monster, i watched that and was waiting for docter phil to come in and say "how does that make you feel", they have lost there anger.

I want to see if Trujillo did some contribution to the new album.... one of the reasons St. Anger sucks... IMHO is the lack of a real bass player.

AJFA is definately the best, even with the horrible production, there isn't one bad song on that album. There are a few songs on RTL and MOP that i don't really care for
