It just doesn't add up to me since I am also from Illinois, and went to Illinois State University as a female which also requires you to live in a dorm as a transfer student and/or your first year. However they gave me an option of a single dorm and/or to live off campus due to my situation.

Again it's just doesn't add up to me and I'd like to know the University so there can be activist that could put this on their hitlist of schools that will not accept all students that want to learn.

This is not a witchhunt it just seems strange thats all, and if you just thought it would be easier to go to school as a boy there is no shame in that. I'd like to hear more of your take on this.

When I started my freshman year at UMass/Amherst, I too was informed that all freshmen were required to live in the dorms. However, I was 26 years old and had been living with my future wife for two years at the time, so I went to the administration office and simply informed them that, as an independent adult who had been living on his own for eight years, I was not about to live in the dorms with 1000s of partying 18 year olds. They said no problem, had me fill out a form stating that I was my own legal guardian, and I was clear.

Except that, for the next four years, I received two copies of all documents from the university: one addressed to me as the student, and one addressed to me as my guardian. :lol:

Dorms/ Halls are meant to make it easy for a first year student to settle in, but plenty of students in the UK live in flatshares or even their own flats (thanks to daddy's nifty property investment in the early '80's lol) during their first year. Having lived away from home since I was 8 (boarding school) the thought of having to live in halls was a big no-no when I went uni.

I guess US unis don't put much value on the maturity of their students.

Its more complicated than that, to the American colleges its a business first and foremost. By requiring them to live on campus for a year or two, they get to rake in more money through all these on-campus residents... food, board, etc. People who live on campus spend more on campus.

Yes you are from Illinois but we passed through college at different times. I started at community college in 1998 and finished my BS at NIU in 2003. You went to college when?

"After this I went to NIU. I saw a psych at the Howard Brown center on the weekends. Then in 2001 I decided to try full transition to female at NIU. To get the help I would need I went to a psych at NIU. When I walked in the male psychologist pupils were dilated. He liked what he saw. Then I told him about my home sickness and anxiety. He was cool and ok with that. Then I told him I was a transsexual.... He went ape s__t. His pupils shrank to pinholes. He told me "get out of my office you pervert!" Latter he was forced to apologies to me for his "homophobic response". I was given to a homosexual male psychologist who while not totally worthless seemed obsessed with proving to me that I was simply gay. One part I do not add is that when I went to the GLB health service that existed in Dekalb county at the time they were only conerned with getting me tested for HIV. They also had a very nasty attitude towards me as a transgendered woman. Basically they were of no help whatsoever. The "transgendered support group there was naught but a group of part time het cross dressers. Basically I had no help, only what little moral support I got from one psychologist I met at the Howard Brown Center here in Chicago. (You certainly would know his infamous name if I dropped it.) Along with counciling from an intern.

It may seems odd to someone your age Kelly. In the early 2000's attitudes were very different than they are now. 2000 and 2001 are now 8 and 7 years ago. Allot has changed since then.

Consider the following.

Back in the year 2000 Transgendered persons were not in the mission statement of the Howard Brown health center. The idea of a separate youth center was only and idea. All they basically had a support group that that was it. Howard Brown is now the place for comprehensive Transgender medical and psychological care. Back then we were an afterthought at best.

The culture has also changed. Back in 2000 the only image of transgendered people on TV was basically Jenny Jones and Jerry Springer. Now transgendered characters are taken (at least a little) seriously. Very very few sympathetic portrayls of transgendered people were on TV (Vanessa was one such well portrayed person on Jenny Jones, she tells me it was rather civil and respectful. Her loyalty to her long time friend Mimi and insulting me aside the facts remain the facts.)

I could go on and on. In light of all of that you can see why a university in the North west quadrant of Illinois would have the policies it did.

Kira there has been no "back and forth". In once sentence my transition story sums to this... I started hormones at 13, lived as a transgendered girl until I was 21, had to give up transgendered life for the sake of going to university, then once I was away from that university I started the process of transition back to female. In total I have lived 4.5 years of my life since I was 13 as a male.

Vanessa is just trying to hurt my feelings or make me look bad or whatever because of the bad blood between me and her and mimi.

Where I think I loose so many girls who read that is that most of you cannot imagine anything in life being so precious to you as to make sacrificing life as a woman worth it. For me the right to study science at the highest levels is just that. To be a scientist and do something that will make a difference to generations to come is why god put me on earth. Being told basically that I cannot attend college and live as I wanted to... the choice was a no brainer.

The alternative was to drop out of college and then I really would have NO choice but to have been a escort and/or act in adult movies and such. Or perhaps to get into a industry with a more "pink" image a more gay industry than science and academics.

My highschool was somewhat willing to accommodate me. There were just enough friendly administrators to make my situation workable...and just enough on the other side to make life hard.

Apparently ISU was willin, NIU was not. Perhaps if I had chosen a different university I would have had a different story.

I guess that all came down to the luck of the draw. Even as late as this year I read a newsitem about a kid who was for a time barred by the univ they were at from attending as a female and living in female dorms. Eventually arrangements were made to accommodate them. Every situation is different.

Ah but they did not stop me from dressing as I pleased. The housing office at NIU stopped me from living in quarters that would be safe for me as a transgender woman. They used the same logic that officially excludes public accommodations (such as rest rooms) off limits to transgendered people. The message was basically this... "Sure you can go to school as a female, dress as a female and all that but you have to bunk locked in a room with a male on a floor full of horny young men." I did try to play it that way for a time. Dressing as a female while living in the male dorm after a while it obviously just was not safe for me.

The change was notable as when I did finally butch up this one professor paused before starting her lecture in the first semester of quantum mehanics and said "It looks like Mr. Far___ has finally found is oats."

Anyway this is all water under the bridge. No amount of money could make up for lost time. I graduated from there. What with the years of hormones I had before then all the masculinizing I did was to gain some whiskers on my chin. Those are almost totally gone. I have moved on to better things in better places.

Funny thing. Last year at UIC A professor from NIU came there to fill in for a sick friend. He had taught me the second half of undergraduate Quantum Mechanics. He did not even recognize me as being me. That is just how strong gender cues can be I guess. Probably helps that I am androgynous in so many ways.

I don't feel that you are bullying me at all. My highschools technique for making my life hard was a really brilliant chess move on the part of the school board. They created a dress code that defined what a boy may wear and what a girl may not wear. Naturally rules that say what you cannot do are more permissive than rules that say what you can. This code was just short of a uniform. Basically boys had to wear a "collared" shirt and pants that went at least 3 inches above the knee. (So no short shorts). After getting sent home almost every day I got smart and did exactly what the code said. I bought a variety of pants that were just long enough. I also bought the tightest jeans I could get my hands on and cut them off at the length I wanted. For a top I would usually wear a polo shirt. A bit of luck for me was that at the time Capri pants were in fashion.

That maneuver and many other things I did are why when I go to the polling place to vote people who worked in the offices at Proviso West High School recognize me. They remember me as having been a girl all that time. People who knew me better knew my deal of course.

I have a question for you Kelly. My parents were both born during WWII. My mother was born the same day we nuked Japan. Some people have said to me that it's not surprising that they have been less accepting than the parents of many girls my age because of when they were born themselves. ( They did not throw me out of the house and were willing to look the other way while I broke the law to get hormones that was about the extent of their support for me.)

No one talks about his being gay openly. He didn't even come out to me when me and my family went to visit NYC last july.

I don't know Hontas, so I'm not going to comment on what Hontas chooses to wear. However plenty of ggs and tgs can install a toilet, lay dry wall, paint a room, replace a flat tire, pump their gas and change the oil in a car. These activites are not the exclusive domain of men.

I woke up this morning and thought of what may be the big difference between ISU in Bloominton-Normal and NIU in Dekalb. I checked and Bloomington Normal has a population of over 100,000. Compare that to all of Dekalb county with a population of 89,000 about half of which live in dekalb.

Another difference leaving transsexualism aside would be overall diversity. Many black people who attended NIU have had the experience of being the first black person some people have ever met. The same for other minority groups. I imagine Bloomington Normal has respectably sized minority communities including a GLBT community. Dekalb had and has little in the way of minorities. Though I would say it also has little in the way of overt open racism.

The point I am getting at is that it can be said truthfully NIU Dekalb is much more of a rural university in a college town... rather than a school which is in a medium sized city like ISU. Given that fact and in hindsight it can be expected that NIU would be less than welcoming.


You may ask why I would go there over going straight to UIC which was my other choice. In 2000 NIU had a faculty member in their physics department transition from male to female. This person was then promoted. It made NIU look very accepting. The real deal is that she was "promoted" to a position where she was out of sight of most of the public. A professor with tenure like her got one kind of treatment I got a very different kind of treatment.

NIU also has certain academic advantages... small classes and very acessible professors with one or two Nobel Laureates.

I was just stating facts that are public knowledge. Richard Foster, Hontis Farmer and Reina Duran. I never knew or hung around Hontis. Non-discrimination statement inclusive of gender identity/expression NO

Accessible, simple process for students to change their name and gender identity on university records and documents. NO

(thankfully I had the foresight to use the form of my name that I use now and used before when living as a female my full legal name would have III "the third" at the end of it. My diploma transcripts etc do not have that.)

Gender-neutral/single occupancy restroom facilities in campus housing NO

LGBT housing options/themes NO

Trains campus police on gender identity/expression issues NO

Active LGBT alumni group NO
(my fault perhaps I should start one)

With the exception of now having a "LGBT" studies program nothing has changed there. NIU is a good place to be gay and a horrible place to be trans.

As for my whiskers. Even if one took hormones since they were a kid, if they stopped they would eventually grow facial hair. Unless they were post-op, or had an orchi. The fact I was able after about a year w/o hormones to grow a goatee proves nothing. My facial features, height, weight, clothing size and shape, etc. are all consistent with one who had been on hormones about that long. This is even more apparent in comparison to the men and women in my family.
