When I was younger I was a huge fan of The Cure. I was also a Depeche Mode and REM fan. TMBG is good (because Istanbul was Constantinople). Joy Division was good (RIP Ian Curtis). ok, I admit it, I liked the "metal" hair bands somewhat, and then I was in to Guns and Roses, and etc.

Shit! I forgot the Smiths!

Why do you come here? and why do you hang around?

Why do you telephone? and why send me silly notes?

You had to sneak into my room just to read my diary.
It was just to see all the things I've written about you (Oh so many illustrations!)

Although not strictly an 80's band, Black Sabbath is the best band of any decade. Just in the 80's, they had Heaven & Hell, The Mob Rules, Live Evil, Born Again, Eternal Idol, and Headless Cross.

Honorable mention: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Ozzy, Dio :rock2

TallDarkandHandsome, Bee, Wombat, and Hara would definitely see eye to eye with me at an '80's themed disco. Guns and Roses kind of signaled the downfall of that techno pop/new wave sound for me. What the 80's sound came in and "cleaned up", G&R kind of brought back. Grrrrr. :(

... How about that? New sounds with new daring looks -- WITH MELODIES ONE COULD HUM and lyrics one could discern ?! :)

The Blasters are one of my favorite bands, and I once had the pleasure of sharing a few beers with them when I used to bounce in the "pit" at local shows during the 80's. It was 30 bucks a night and a whole lot of pussy to boot. I believe only one of the Alvin bros. played with X though. Anyway, if you're a Blasters fan you should really check out The Old 97's from Texas.

The real sad part about that wonderful music from those years is that it lasted for such a short time. It's like one moment they were there all at one time with the hair, make-up, androgeny, fresh catchy melodic tunes, risque lyrics, et all, and before one could take it all in, they were gone. I saw many of the big acts at the time, but there were so many bands I wished I could have seen at their peak ... Spandau Ballet, Bow-Wow-Wow, The Jam, The Clash, OMD, Romeo Void, Translator, Ultravox, The Human League, Soft Cell (Sex Dwarf, Hee-hee), New Order, Yaz, Talk Talk, Haircut 100, Erasure ... way too many to list.

... Some of the one-hit wonders do actually get back together, so there is hope after all to still see some of them years later:

I actually got to see Roxy Music, Melissa, and though I'll give Mellencamp his props here and there, I agree with the general tone of your choices. I didn't care for any of those bands, particularly every band Leverage87 (nothing personal there, Leverage) listed upstream. Those bands to me were just, um, well, noise.

Yes, that would be one that would fall under that two prong category. Lots of times it isn't the artist or the song so much as it is a radio station being obsessed with it. ... MTV played it out too. :(

You all have named most of the bands I liked then, New Order, the Cure, U2. I would add Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Social Distortion, Sisters of Mercy, 10,000 Maniacs, The Waterboys, XTC, the Stranglers, Stone Roses, Peter Gabriel, Eurythmics, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits.

And yes Melissa, REO sucked.

... Think about it. Music at the time (late '70s/early '80s) was in such a dreadful funk and in such a dire need to reinvent itself and "suddenly" sounds such as the following begin to appear on about 12 alternative radio stations strewn across the country; many of these sounds would eventually cross over to mainstream stations, and the rest as they say is history:

Flipper "Sex Bomb" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE5OuGYQP00
I used to sing this song to my cat.

Gang of Four "To hell with poverty" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPnOnp07fQI

I remember running a canned radio interview of Exene in that period. She was talking about running around w/ Lux Interior of the Cramps. She said something along the lines "We didn't feel like we were properly dressed unless people were pointing and laughing."

The Gang of Four's debut album is a classic.

Got ya beat. My first concert ever, I had the coolest cousin, who snuck me into a show in Pittsburgh for the "Ghost In The Machine" tour. Can't remember the opening act. But it was at a crappy venue in Pittsburgh. Saw them again for Synchronicity, and the reunion tour a few years back.

Met REM, hard to find the video, but if you can track down their live performance on "Nick Rocks - Video To Go" I'm one of the 11 year olds rocking out to "Radio Free Europe" in the background. I was in New York auditioning for a TV show my mom wanted me to be in, and grabbed me while I was waiting and had me hang out while REM lip synched the song three times. Don't remember thinking they were going to be huge at that early time, but remember the host "Joe from Chicago" was a raging douchebag to them, and made fun of them between takes.
