I liked Lene back in my youth. She's still around?

When it comes to a favorite,it's Aretha Franklin for me. She has been for 40 plus years. Prime example of a voice as an instrument.

Etta James would run a close second.

Mine would be:

Ella Fitzgerald. No bullshit. I defy anyone to listen to her songs and tell me she is not the famale equivelent to Nat King Cole in greatness.

Others are:

Linda Rondstadt
Nora Jones
And Delores O’Riordan from the cranberries. Listen to her sing Ave Maria and you will have tears in your eyes.

Another Winner is Eva Cassidy

Caff_Racer
11-22-2007, 01:29 AM
If it's classical music we're talking about, then for me Maria Callas wins hands down. As for rock music... well in that case it's Janis Joplin.

By the way, what's the big thing with Amy Winehouse? I went to see her in concert here in Barcelona some time back, out of curiosity, and it was shite: crap voice, no stage presence (a bloody civil servant puts more enthusiasm into his job...) and as far as her looks.... methinks it's more like Amy Crackhouse, quite frankly...

Cheers!

For me it has always been Janet Jackson. I've been a fan of her's from the beginning.

but for new talent I would have to say Terra Naomi

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlXlhFlHR8A

my only problem with the video is I remember when it first came out, the very last shot was of an american soldier in Iraq holding a sign simply saying "to go home" and for whatever reason that last poignant shot was taken out.

As a jazz lover, my alltime favorites in order are Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter, and Sarah Vaughn. No one could put the soul in soul music like Aretha Franklin, what a voice. Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell from folk. In rock, Grace Slick had a fantastic voice until drugs, booze and cigs took their toll on her. As you can guess, I'm a 60's guy, both in musical tastes and age, too.

Minnie Riperton had such a haunting 5 octave voice...she's been gone for 30 years, yet I still miss her. If you have a chance, check out her first two albums (Come Into My Garden and Perfect Angel). When Mariah was younger (i.e., her first three albums) she had that same range. Not that Mariah's voice is bad now of course.

I also like Syreeta and Phyllis Hyman, may they rest in pease...

As for current stars, Mary J. Blige is definitely on my list, as well as Anita Baker.
