Second on Oasis, I saw them a few years ago, I wasn't huge fan (I like Blur better) but Morning Glory and Wonderwall were phenomenal to sing along live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAPtTS0TYtU

Let's not forget some more British rock gods, The Clash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXfaxEaPOjw

And finally crossing the pond for one of, if not the most important bands of this generation - Rage Against the Machine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-58-36lSqG4

jimjamcan that's one of my dreams, to go back in time and watch the Ramones play, apparently they came to Australia when I was about 7, now I'd just like to go where CBGB used to be and lay a flower there.

It was a couple of years before my time but I seem to be younger than a lot of the people here. Does anyone remember back in the highschool era the kids with the Oasis shirts were always the cool underground but still popular kids who were kinda intimidating? That style was fading away in my time to be replaced with some silly pastiche of the good hip-hop that came out of NYC and LA.

Probably why I didn't get into hip-hop till recently.

LOL@Quinns post.

Besides the thread is about rockbands. And even even with a lot of good will their music is not even close to rock and roll.

And yeah, i like their music too.

lupinIII
11-07-2007, 11:47 PM
Bah! The modern world is too bland some Spice is exactly what was needed. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE MOTHERFUCKERS!

In all seriousness, this thread has drifted to the polar fucking opposite end of the popular music sphere into the pure pop hemisphere.

I'll promote some local flavour, Silverchair, amazing progression from 14 year old neo-grunge rockers into eclectic, emotive, atmospheric and downright rockin' musicians, plus Straight Lines is the most perfectly constructed rock song of this year if not this decade.

I'd say the vast majority of The Beatles catalog can be classed as rock it's just how music has generally progressed that people start labelling their older stuff as pop.

I wouldn't classify Nickelback as rock, they're promoting such a neutered and watered down product with no real value yet their guitars are distorted and played in drop-D so they're rock, however songs like Ticket to Ride or A Hard Day's Night aren't rock because when compared with today's music they're quite lighthearted and poppy. I'd say the styles are contextual and have to be judged relative to the periods that they were released.

Well whoever mentioned Silverchair...I'll second that pick; awesome band particularly when you factor in the leap of progression they made from their humble beginnings as "Nirvana KIDZ."

Aside from that Tool, Muse, Radiohead, Black Sabbath, Our Lady Peace (Before line-up change and their suckiness took hold), Can, The Mars Volta, King Crimson, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains

Probably Led Zeppelin, and not because of popularity. The first 2 years of their career, no one came close to them live. Not to mention that the Yardbirds were awesome also. Beyond that, all of their albums are great, except for maybe CODA.

Did you actually see Led Zeppelin Live? In the first 2 years? You don't look old enough.

I saw them live at least 10 times in L.A. but in 1973-75 when I was 14-16.

Velvet Underground, (see avatar), David Bowie-Spiders from Mars, Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Germs,

For me Nirvana will always be the greatest, Kurt Cobain was a musical genius and the unplugged they did for MTV just weeks before Kurt's suicide was nothing short of mind-blowing. I have the DVD and have probably seen it over 100 times.

Other favorites are.

Foo Fighters

Queens Of The Stone Age

Pearl Jam (the Ten album)

It's more punk I guess, but the old Green Day stuff, not so much the new

Tenacious D

Slipknot

Rage Against The Machine

BLACK SABBATH

The new Heaven And Hell project(Dio, Iommi, Butler, Appice AKA Mob Rules Lineup) is great. I have the Live From Music City DVD and love it. Under any name, Sabbath has been going strong since 1970. Ozzy, Dio, Gillan, and Martin have all been good frontmen. Tony Iommi, in my opinion, is the best Rock 'n' Roll guitarist ever, even better than Ritchie Blackmore.

Katoey had it right,

I want to add Supertramp, Janis Joplin, Neil Young (solo), Styx, Boston (world's all time best selling debut album), Kansas, Queen, Rush, Animals, and there are many more .....

Can any of those names compare to whats being made today?

A lot of people are saying that the music industry is at its lowest point ever nowadays. Can't imagine why....

Well, hey, I'm new here, and I love music so I figured this would be a great thread for me to start in.

Well, I'm really into the 80s and the classic heavy metal of the 70s and early to mid 80s. Also I am a fan of Glam Rock and Hair Metal and pretty much anything in the genre of Rock/Metal, except for newer stuff (aside from HIM, Tool, and Godsmack)

In no specific order:

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio (his band, not just him in Sabbath), KISS, Judas Priest, Pantera, H.I.M., Motorhead, Ozzy (on his own), Poison, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Def Lepard, Whitesnake, Eddie Money, Boston, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon, Journey, and so much more

What can I say, if its too old for me to have been alive to buy the original album, I'll probably like it.

I love pretty much all music from the time when bands actually PLAYED music, nowdays I can't stand this 'music' crap that bands put out (With the exceptions from my previous post and a few more)

Jamie T's album Panic Prevention is one of my favourites of this year. He's new out of England and does some really fantastic lo-fi scrappy mash-up of punk folk and hip-hop.

I believe th person who introduced his music to me commented that he's like if the love child of Billy Bragg and Mike Skinner tried to do his best impersonation of Joe Strummer.

Quite superb, try and listen to the song Salvadore.

Linkin Park didn't kill anything they're far too B-grade to have done anything so dramatic. In fact, from a postmodern perspective any band who could "destroy music" are to be commended. Hell going back to early punk bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash, these were people who were accused of the same thing, ruining British music, nah Linkin Park couln't have done something like that.

Linkin Park are crap, at the beginning they were the poor man's version of Korn or Limp Bizkit (2 other crappy bands), now their music resembles a slower humourless version of Good Charlotte or My Chemical Romance.

That's why lots of people hate them.

Me I don't think I need to hate them, they just need to be ignored so hopefully they won't release anymore music.

I'm not opposed to them making money, hell I'm not opposed to them getting the band back together and charging obscene amounts of money for shows (I bought tickets for RATM reunion shows in Sydney), but Rotten's comments were just retarded, if he had made said comments in a self-referential jibe at his band and the music industry in general along with Sting and The Police I would've gone out and bought three extra copies of NMtB and given them to my friends who aren't into punk, but the fact that he was so fuckin' sanctimonious about it made me dry-retch.

To be very honest with you, Night Rider, NO!!! They were/are too influenced by The Beatles, and I can't stand them either. Both are far to whiny and too popy imho. But it's really a matter of one's own personal taste, just like the women you're attracted to, ain't it. But to repeat myself, NO!!! The only good thing I have to say about Oasis is that they were definitely better than their British contemporaries, Blur... but then that doesn't say much does it! :D

I disagree. Oasis' genre is Britpop, and like the name suggests, Britpop is far more popular than the grunge-type rock that predominates in the U.S.. Who isn't influenced by the Beatles? That's a real tough one, mmm... I'm thinking Elvis.

"Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. If there hadn't been an Elvis, there wouldn't have been a Beatles." - John Lennon.

Lennon was overated as well imho. If the Beatles hadn't made it at the time they did then someone else would have. Elvis, however, was very original.

Each to their own but i've interviews of Manny and Ian Brown [Stone Roses] saying that oasis are the best rock and roll band since The Beatles. I think they have a better judgement than u and i, considering they're in the business. I know Elvis was the reason The Beatles started but if their was no Beatles then there wouldn't other groups, including oasis (which u'd be happy about) :) John is a modest man and in my opinion he's underrated, even though he's regarded as one of the top musicians of all time, and was in the most famous group of all time.

Blur are absolute shite...they are lower than spice girls/robbie williams everyone..

They make music that is in "fashion" at the time. That's why Damon Albarn joined the Gorillaz when that style of music was popular...

Whereas true rock bands make music that they believe in and if nobody likes it, they don't give a fuck..

I'd say your post is wrong but that don't begin to cover it. Blur, combined more elements into their music, instead of just doing the straight Brit-pop they were far more artistically and aesthetically aware, combining electronica, new-wave etc, along with working alonside the emerging artists like Damien Hirst.

Albarn wasn't following shit creating the Gorillaz, have you ever heard of a band combining pop, art and narrative? He, along with Howlett were groundbreaking in that respect. The fact that they got popular is a sign of their quality and aptitude for writing good songs.

Your argument makes it sound like any song that becomes #1 does so because it's piggy-backing on what's popular, of course so Wonderwall is just a wannabe Beatles song with some keyboard thrown in to sound heartfelt.

And what's this retarded tripe about "real rockstars" not giving a fuck, how fucking whiny are the Gallagher brothers?!

Ok Dino I agree with alot that you have to say here but I with that said I will give Sabs a close #2 spot on my list. And yes the Heaven and Hell tour was great I saw them earlier this year & it was awesome! Also FYI it looks like Dio will put his Magica 2 project on hold to do a complete Heaven and Hell new studio album in 2008. http://www.black-sabbath.com/news/index.html So knowing how you love Sabbath you should like that. But here is my list.

1. IRON MAIDEN! Still producing great music, last year released their 13th studio album "A Matter of Life and Death" and it was very good. All three albums since the return of Dickinson have been awesome!
2. Black Sabbath - see above
3. Dio - I have seen him live more than any other performer & he always puts on a top notch show. Magica is one of my favorite albums. And I have met him & he is truly a class act.
4. Judas Priest - Loved the last album with Halford back, "Angel of Retribution" Cant wait for the next album it will be a concept album about Nostradmus.
5. Nightwish - I like the new album "Dark Passion Play" and even though they dumped Tarja I feel it was the right move & Annette has a great voice too, its just a bit different.
6. Led Zepplin - Classic
7. Rush - On their swan song tour, sad they wont be around much longer, but then again, "All good thing must end"
8. AC/DC - Last heard in studio to create their final studio album, see the same thing I said about Rush.
9. Pink Floyd - Should prolly be higher on my list...
10. Have a hard time picking #10 my last spot... so Ill just say Scorpions, Motorhead, Queensryche, Metallica (earlier stuff), Megadeth, Fear Factory, Zombie, Jimi Hendrix, Iced Earth and the list could go on and on...

Google search for "oasis + plagiarism"
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=oasis+plagiarism&spell=1

Extracts from the first 4 links:
OASIS STAR ADMITS PLAGIARISM
OASIS rocker NOEL GALLAGHER has openly admitted plagiarising a BURT BACHARACH hit for his B-side HALF THE WORLD AWAY. The LAYLA guitarist has often been accused of being too heavily influenced by THE BEATLES and T-REX, but he has no qualms about revealing his pilfering of the Bacharach/HAL DAVID composed song THIS GUY'S IN LOVE WITH YOU. He says, "It sounds exactly the same. I'm surprised he hasn't sued me yet."
http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/oasis%20star%20admits%20plagiarism_1000927

Headshrinker (Oasis song)
The song's intro is similar to that of the Faces song "Stay With Me"; yet unlike other instances where Oasis were accused of plagiarism, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, who wrote the song, were both big fans and were happy to take no action.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headshrinker_(Oasis_song)

Cigarettes & Alcohol
The song was one of the first cases when Oasis was accused of musical plagiarism, a reputation of the band that would later grow. The main riff of the song is supposedly "borrowed" from "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" by T-Rex and also bears a similarity to the opening of Humble Pie's cover of "C'Mon Everybody" from the album Smokin'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarettes_&_Alcohol

OASIS (What's the Story?), Act I
Norris - In addition to their bouts with journalists, Oasis have also had some legal problems ranging from a lawsuit filed by their ousted drummer Tony McCarrol for back royalities, to a plagiarism suit by the Coca-Cola company charging that the Oasis tune -"Shakermaker" sounds a bit too much like "The Real Thing".

Liam Gallagher - We just put it in just for the...you know, for the crack. Everyone's suing us these days. It's just music.

OK, don't get me wrong, I didn't mind Oasis, but that guy's argument against Blur was kinda short-bus material. And I can't stand people who are too dumb to back up their arguments.

i want to dedicate to you all a song of Uriah Heep

the ''July Morning''
if anyone doesnt have listen it before he has to do it...............hello to everyone :)

I worked on the last few dates of their '74 US tour,Clind. I never cared for their music but I've never seen a band control a crowd like they did night in and night out. It was something to behold.

5 Favorite Rock and Roll bands? Hmmm........ how about per decade?

From the 50's,Little Richard and his band would be tops for me. Big Joe Turners outfit would run a close second, then the Crickets,Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhthym,,and maybe Billy Riley and his Little Green Men.

The 60's sheesh........The Who,The Kinks,Dick Dale and the Del-Tones,13th Floor Elevators,and the Velvet Underground.

The 70's The Patti Smith Group,The Ramones,The Stooges,The Blue Oyster Cult and The Clash.

The 80's REM,Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper,The Dead Kennedy's,The Dead Milkmen,and Jane's Addiction

The 90's The Lunachicks,The Breeders,The Offspring,Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquors, and what the Beastie Boys developed into circa 1990/91 and on.

The 00's Fugazi,The Bouncing Souls,All,Pennywise and The Voodoo Glowskulls.

Jesus Christ the guys sound like absolute pussies, getting into bitch-outs with jacktards like Robbie Williams and Green Day, woooo real rockstar there, wonder who they're going to have a pussyfest about next, Maddy McCan? Amy Winehouse? Oh of course! they're going to have it out with one of the Spice Girls!
ROTFLMAO... f**king brilliant, lupinIII!!! Oasis were/are a bunch of non-talented and unoriginal, wankers!

Ripping-off an advert... LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Five words to describe Oasis' catalog: music to get pissed too.

Long live the original Spice Girls!

Google search for "spice girls + plagiarism"
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=spice+girls+plagiarism&hl=en&start=10&sa=N
:?: :?: :?:

LMAO, tell me something i don't know. Noel has openly said he used ideas from other songs in his early songs. The fact that most of them are B side songs makes it acceptable. Also, Shakernaker was a piss take of the Coca-Cola advert and it still made it to No.1 in the charts. Whether u like them or not they are one of the best bands around today.

@ luppin...ur talking a bit of shite there mate, because oasis didn't write wonderwall  so how the fuck are they copying the beatles! It stayed in the top 100 for 9 years so it couldn't have been that bad

They're the best band around today and it's funny how much it annoys the people that don't like them. John Lennon was influenced by Elvis, does that mean he shouldn't get any credit for his songs.

Congratulations on entirely missing the friggin' point. I never fucking said I didn't like Oasis! OK now that we have that settled, let's move on.

Actually no wait let's repeat that for those in the audience who're a bit slow.

I never fucking said I didn't like Oasis.

Right, now I think we can move on. Your argument regarding Blur, following the "fashion" at the time is in your charming vernacular, "a bit of shite"

Considering all these bands were pioneering a new British sound, each of them drawing from the rich histories of British popular music (not Britpop, I mean British music that has been part of popular British culture in the past), your thing of following the "fashion" is rather retarded. My point is, saying Blur follow "fashion" is completely tantamount to saying Oasis did nothing new with their brand of pop music, just putting some keyboard in it.

OK, so did we understand that? Saying Blur was following the "fashion", is exactly the same as saying Oasis was following the "fashion".

And for those really brain damaged plebeians, I never fucking said I didn't like Oasis.

On an unrelated note I'd like to say "goddamn life is good!"

Blur and Oasis are two completely different bands and the only reason they're compared, is because they were competing with each other at the same time. We all know who folded. So calling Oasis whinny bitches and saying they're trying to be The Beatles isn't exactly singing their praises, is it? Blur would have made punk music at the time if it was popular. The fact that Damon Albarn joined the Gorillaz when rock/rap music was starting to be combined, proves it. Do u think Noel would've teamed up with Busta Rhymes. Also the quality of lyrics in Blur's songs are among the worst ever wrote. For fuck sake the chorus in one of their songs is "he lives in a house, a very big house in the country" lol wtf. They might have been catchy tunes but that's what they were intended to be to sell as many albums as possible. At the end of the day they will always be shite!

I'm not critisizing u for liking them, because there are a couple of bands i like that aren't that great. But Blur aren't in the same league as Oasis.

Yes, ziggy Stardust was a work of god, or possibly massive amounts of drugs, I always found it hilarious, just some of the lyrics, especially the 'with god given ass' part.

I havent mentioned Queen yet, though others have for one simple reason...its like comparing Michael Jordan to every other hoopster...not fair.

Queen
Queen 2
Sheer Heart Attack
Night at the Opera
Day at the Races
News of the World

All are masterpieces and no synths!!!!

To name a few one hitter wonders:

Warrant (Cherry Pie Obviously)
Twiztid Sizter (Well, technically they had 2 hits)
Asia (Heat of the Moment is all that comes to mind)
Europe (The Final Countdown)
Hasselhoff (At least in Germany, with his Looking for Freedom song)

Just to throw them in there, they were good for 1.
