spaghetti westerns, particular the good, the bad and the ugly almost all the characters are memorable and the soundtrack is also what makes it the film so great, ennio morricone is one hell of a composer.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is the best Western ever. Of course, I voted for Spaghetti Western. Sergio Leone and/or Sergio Corbucci for example used to show the reality of the American past while the American Western stuff with John Wayne is way too clean, too much into the hero image and too political because they used to show the Indians as the bad guys who are so fucking barbarous, so they killed and raped white women and children.

But there are some good American Western movies and we should mention some Neo-Westerns like "Heaven´s Gate" by Michael Cimino for example.

The quick and the dead is in my opinion one of the worse westerns of all time, the casting was just horrible.

CO-SIGN!! The casting doesn't bother me nearly as much as the corny story and cheesy effects, like.... A bullet goes through someone's head and there is no blood or head splattering? Just a nice clean hole with light shinning through??? Come on...

I went with American. American westerns dominate with respect to depth and scope. They also seem to be more concerned with conveying a message -- at least the earlier ones. Gary Cooper in "High Noon" would be my individual favorite.

Another great western featured John Wayne, James Stewart and Lee Marvin: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. James Stewart kind of reprises his Destry-like aversion to carrying a gun; whereas John Wayne knew that you had to carry a weapon to protect the folks for whom you care. Kind of like our current gun vs anti-gun argument.

The Spaghetti westerns, Peckinpah's Wild Bunch and many Hollywood copies seem to exploit violence as a tool used as a first choice solution by both good guys and bad guys alike; whereas in the earlier Hollywood westerns, the good guys tried to avoid violence at all costs, even if they had a revolver strapped to their leg.

Great topic. I picked Spaghetti Westerns as well. I have 2 excellent box sets that I recommend all fans of the genre track down as they are out of print. The first one is Blue Underground's The Spaghetti Western Collection (Run Man Run / Mannaja / Django Kill / Django). The other is Anchor Bay's Once Upon a Time in Italy - The Spaghetti Western Collection (A Bullet for the General / Companeros / Four of the Apocalypse / Keoma / Texas Adios).

Spaghetti Westerns have had gargantuan performances from guys like Franco Nero, Lee Van Cleef, Tomas Milian, Klaus Kinski, and, of course, Clint Eastwood. Ennio Morricone has provided some great music in many of these films.

On IFC from time to time, there is a very informative documentary called The Spaghetti West. People who only know of Leone's Spaghetti Westerns should check this out.

This is a great list of movies. To make a great list better, I would add The Long Riders, The Big Gundown, Django, Mannaja, Four of the Apocalypse, High Plains Drifter, and Lonesome Dove.

Here's How I Rank Your List
1) The Good ,the Bad and the Ugly
2) Wild Bunch
3) Once Upon a Time in the West
4) A Fistful Of Dollars
5) The Big Silence
6) Unforgiven
7) For a Few Dollars More
8) Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett
9) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
10) Open Range

A few lines of a western script as likely written by our resident little moron, Legend:

RG4M: So we finally, meet Mr Do gooder reach for, the sky you, self-righteous dirty varment!

Legend: I'd think twice about firing that, gun tranny chaser in a salon full of witnesses you're best bet is to high tail out of here you are wanted already by at least three, states and rumor has it there is quite a price and your head and I hear the posse is already in a nearby town.

Bang!
Bang!

Ba,ng!

Legend: You may have shot, me tranny chaser but as, I lay here bleeding just remember that; there are more like me out there ridding the west of tranny chasers like, you who take advantage of these vulnerable innocent naive girls at they're parties so you best look over your shoulder all you can 'cause there are more like me willing to take up the cause and hunt you immoral chasers down ...

For me, it's a 3 great westerns:
«The Magnificent Seven»
«The Good, the Bad, the Ugly» (that famous phrase: «If you want to shoot — shoot, don' talk.» B-))
«MacKenna's Gold»

And… sorry for offtopic, one «eastern» — old soviet movie «The White Sun Of Desert» (Information from IMDb here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066565/); IMDb users comments here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066565/usercomments))

Although a comedy, I liked Mavrick with Mel Gibson and Jody Foster. As for true westerns, Tombstone is the all time best. Johnny Ringo and Doc Halliday are fuckin bad ass. Kevin Costner in Wayat Earp just sucked.
