In the news today: Intel has just released its Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 processor, a dual processor with twin 3.2 GHz cores.

For the less computer savvy, all that translates to: really, really fast.

Personally, I'm not the most computer savvy guy either. I get by, and my latest computer is pretty damn fast, but I'm wondering how far this processor speed thing is gonna go? Not to mention those crazy dual PCI express video cards that are out now.

Has the technology surpassed "over-kill"? Can programmers actually make games or applications that require this level of tech?

Not sure. The last time I used an Apple it was in high school and I was playing Zork. :)

Although I have heard Apple makes better systems for digital editing and other things. . .Just don't know that much about 'em.

dual cpu's have been available for quite some time, Dual Cores however is a new technology in the desktop market, interestingly this release is actually a mere paper release, there are none of the chips available to buy, this was done to just claim they were first, an honour they wished to take from AMD whom launch there chip soon.

Yes I am a geek :p

Just like it ain't the meat, it's the motion, it ain't the speed, it's the performance: how well the software you run utilizes the power you provide it, and, far more important, what you as the user can do with all that. I figure I'll always be at least two years behind the curve: more isn't necessary and is unaffordable on my income. (fwiw, I'm running a single processor 2.4 GHz with 1 GB ddr ram and it's fast enough for what I need.)

The AMD dual cores will be out a whole year before Intels. AMD keeps kicking their asses all over the place. The only reason I buy an Intel chip is to keep a standard at a workplace. Servers? Opteron. Personal workstations? amd64.
