Johnny, why do I get a sense that this is leading up
to a rant about cyclists blocking traffic, or that you
have hit someone on a bike?

yes, I do own a Mountain Bike and I do use it.

thing is, if I walk, I bitch about cyclists and drivers of cars.

if I am on my bike, I bitch about pedestrians and drivers of cars.

if I am driving my car, I bitch about pedestrians and cyclists

Road and hybrid here. For 30 years I rode a classic Bottecchia, and then bought a hybrid for trail and rough road use (but I'm not into mountain biking). Finally, 3 years ago I bought a spanking new Bianchi road bike.

Sometime in the last century, when I was driving a cab (Hacking, before hacking became...well...hacking), I pulled up to a corner store to get some coffee. Used my turn signals, checked my mirrors, etc. (I am =very= good at what I do) and as I threw the shift lever to PARK there was a loud *BANG* at the back of the cab.

Not sure what he was looking at as he was barrelling down the boulevard, but a morning cyclist had to be scraped off the rear widnow of my cab. He was OK, just a bit shaken and rather embarrassed at having not seen this big, brightly colored car in front of him in the parking lane.

So, yah, I too expected a Johnny rant.

And I also anticipated it somehow involving shoes,
most likely open toed shoes.

I road and mountain. Mostly been roading this summer though, haven't been out on the trails much though. Usually do about 75 miles a week on the road.

Aggressive mountain. I'm really surprised I don't have more scars.

It's been a couple years though. :(

I miss riding. I should get my bike when I go back to NY this weekend.

And then take naked pictures out on the trails. haha. :)

I had an unusual cycling accident about 30 years back. I was biking down Mass Ave by MIT when I was run over....by a pedestrian. Yeah, this guy bolted across the street and ran right into me, spilling us both on the pavement. I think he saw no cars coming, but failed to note the cyclist bearing down on him.

So, yah, I too expected a Johnny rant.
Likewise, but I figured Peggy covered this.... ;)

I'm one of those cycleist types. I have about about 4 mountain bikes at the moment; my personal bike, my back-up bike, and 2 I'm in the process of rebuilding.

I bike at least 3 miles a day to and from work, and, thanks to an excellent trail system we have here, I manage* to stay off ot the roads for the most part.
If I do find myself on a highway, however, in the shoulder going AGAINST traffic is my preferred tactic. That way, I can see what's coming at me and get the f*ck out of the way if need be. It's saved my ass more than once. ;)

*edit: one too many vowels.

actually it's not a rant, I love mountain biking, the only reason I don't ride a road bike is because the ones I am interested in are anywhere from $5-6k

you are not alone

currently I am lightening up my MTB, going for newer Shimano XTR components and alot more carbon fiber

glad to know I'm not alone as far as cycling goes on here, that's cool

I hear ya, JW. My Bottecchia, in its day, was a world class bike ("champione del mundo, 1967-68-69" iirc), all Campy components. The equivalent bike today would run 5-6k. I couldn't afford that, but had to finally replace it (frame is slightly bent from an accident, plus it's actually a bit too large for me, something I could accommodate when I was younger but not now). So I bought my Bianchi Volpe in 2005 for what I could afford at the time (about $800--it was more important for my wife to buy a new VW Jetta). A compromise, but a decent bike and sufficient for my needs at the age of *cough* 55.

A friend of mine a year later bought a $4500 bike, I believe a Trek Madone, a wonder to ride in every way.

JWBL...I live in Colorado...you've goota have an MTB or they force you to move to FLA. I'm with ya on the cost of good bikes, though. $5-6K is definitely something to rant about. My budget won't allow that absolutely rediculous indulgence. but, unless you are a tri-athlete, or something along that line, a bike at $500 or less is more than adequate. :shrug

The difference between a $1000 and a $1500 bike is not that great--it's more a matter of which feels better to you, which fits your body and riding style. But a $500 bike is a compromise, no two ways about it. Test ride a $500 bike and a $1000 bike and you'll see a big difference, much bigger than between $1000 and $1500 or even, I daresay, between $1000 and $3000-4000. When you get that rarified, unless you're an athletic cyclist, I doubt that you really have the physique to appreciate the differences, as they are ever more incremental.

Some of my friends in NYC get really into the whole cycling thing and pay absurd amounts of money for parts. They actually sit around and talk about it like gear heads talk about cars. Frankly, I always thought that they were crazy.

I don't know much about the high-end bikes, but that looks cool.

I've had a Dahon for a few years now. Fun, convenient way to zip around downtown. The entire first summer I had mine, at least twice a week someone would say (while I was stopped at an intersection):

"Hey! That thing's great!"

Me: "Yup. And it folds in half. Twice."

"Get outta here!"

Then I'd get off the bike and do a dramatic demonstration of bike folding. The following response was common:

"What the? Is that some sort of spy bike? You put that in a briefcase or something?"

The trick is to put the seat down low, they look cooler that way. Oh, and I've bolted a beat-up leather back pack on mine as a cargo holder. Got a flat tire at the moment, and it's gotten too cold outside to worry about it this year. They are cool little machines, though.

Now I gotta unfold it and take a picture of the damn thing. . .

It is a cross bike, but its available in either steel or aluminum, your choice. Its even available with a coupler so you can fold it. I got sniped on ebay when I tried to buy a Sycip a couple of years ago. I bought a Jamis cross bike instead.

If you already have a mtn bike, try a cross bike on the same trails. It really makes them fun again in a new way.

$5-$6k? for a bike?

I'm curious, do people drive in new york or rely on public transport?
is there any room to park a car if you own one?

So who knows the history of New Amsterdam?

Sigh, yes we drive in NYC, although the city would be much more efficient if folks used public transportation more and got tax cuts for cycling to work to save the environment, but Detroit and Japan wouldn't like that.
There's plenty of places to park in the city, as a matter of fact one of the most profitable businesses in NYC is owning a parking lot. You hire a foreigner to sit in a booth and sometimes shuffle vehicles for minimum wage while you charge people anywhere from $20/hr to $150/day to park their vehicles.
What's funny about these replies Kriss is that I've been to the Netherlands and I've bought some high priced stuff for my high priced bikes over there, stuff I couldn't get over here in the states. While it is true you will find thousands of standard day to day bicycles on one of the many thousands of swamped bike racks in places like Den Haag or Amsterdam what you will not see are the bikes like mine, they are for recreation not main use

it is what it is, yes I've spent a few thousand on bikes & parts, nothing in comparison to guys & girls spending thousands on engine parts to make their hondas/chevy's/or whatever else car manufacturer out there faster............

back to you Felicia, I don't like cyclocross, never got into it, but thanks, I'll keep my full suspension XC bike that weighs it's little 24lbs and do my 5 foot jumps and black diamonds ;)

another sidenote: did anybody have a BMX-bike in their pre-pimple-faced days??? 8)

my friend has a Look road bike about $7k altogether, I love the acceleration of that thing, the dura ace group is flawless, but so is my XTR drivetrain, and I can jump off stuff with my frame, on that Look he owns I'd break that carbon too easily

interestingly though Look just came out with a carbon hardtail frame, the shit is awesome

I had a trek mtb that cost me about $800. It was an aliminum frame one w/ the next level down from shimano's xtr component set. This was like... must have been 7 or 8 years ago. It was super lightweight though, compared to most bikes of the day.
I wish I could afford a new bike. Maybe a hardtail with a carbon fiber frame. And skis... and a new snowboard... (refrain)

I have a mountainbike from tesco but I havend ridden it for ages.. Did crash it a few times when I used to live in Poland. I can't forget the time when I went to a lake about 25km away from where I lived, fell over while going down a steep hill because of a rut which I hadn't seen and then had to go back all the way covered in blood and dust and with only my shoes to use as breaks. I may even bring the bike to the UK in July. Scotland should have some nice paths to visit 8-Đ
