Has anyone ever seen it? It was on Lifetime a while ago. It's the story of Gwen Araujo, born Edward Araujo. Gwen was a transgender teenager. She was murdered by three boys she had a party with after they found out she was trans.

It was probably one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. I wanna see it again but I'm not sure if it's on DVD or anything. And I haven't see any other Trans films besides this and Hedwig.

So someone should totally recommend me some, if there are any others. I really need some new material to watch.

Unfortunately most of the movies that deal with trans-women are downers. When I first started to transition people told me to watch boys don't cry. That left me with a tremendous amount of fear for a long time, and was probably a bad way to start things off.

Don't see Trans-America, it totally sucks.

Ma Vie En Rose is a beautiful film, I'm really digging the Anime TV series Princess Princess right now (even though its not really trans), Pedro Almodovar consistently creates semi-obnoxious films about trans people such as La Mala Educacion and All about my mother. My brain is a bit pre-occupied on the yummy smells coming from my kitchen, but hopefully that helps.

I loved the movie. It is one of the best movies on this
subject matter. It is not pornographic, so the 'admirers'
may not enjoy it. But it truly tells the strory of a transwomans
struggles in a foreign land as she enters a life of prostitution
to earn money for her SRS.

I picked up my copy from Netflix.

Transamerica

I enjoyed the movie. I found it touching, poignant, and at
times very amusing.

I have seen just about every transsexual movie (non porn)
ever made. One day I will list them. In my opinion they tend
to be flawed in one way or another.

Felicity Huffman was good in the role of Bree, and Bree comes
across as likable. Though she is wound as tight as a cat in a
room full of rocking chairs.

And while I am a proponent of every womens right to undergo
SRS, Bree just didn't strike me as ready for that step. Also I
hope that she was getting a discount on her psychotherapy,
as her reliance on her therapist was to say the least dependent,
clingy, and needy.

One would think that a woman who had been in life
(not neccesarily 'the life') but who was a mature women
would have better coping skills, but hey who am I to judge.
A fleet of U-Haul truck follows me wherever I go, because I
have so much baggage.

In summation, Transamerica is a good movie, I daresay a must
see movie for any one interested in the subject. I also
applaud Hollywood for more and more tackling this subject.

However as I have stated I have seen a lot of movies in this
genre, and I don't feel that any of them truly tells our story.

Guess we will have to do it ourselves.

Heaven (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120697/

A struggling architect (Martin Donovan), being sued for divorce by his wife (Joanna Going) and struggling with booze and gambling, finds work remodeling a friend's (Richard Schiff) strip club, the Paradise. There he meets a transsexual stripper (Danny Edwards) who is bothered by accurate, but extremely violent visions of future events. The increasingly violent visions start including the architect, who doesn't believe in the prophesy. One who does however is a psychiatrist who is seeing both the stripper and the architect and is sleeping with the ex-wife. He uses the prophecies for his own financial gain. Finally the scenes from the vision move into reality amidst many plot turns. Written by John Sacksteder {jsackste@bellsouth.net}

Princesa is a must see.

Here's an oldie but goodie:

I Want What I Want : To Be a Woman (1972)

This is the story of a young man's slow transition into the woman he always knew he was meant to be. Roy/Wendy played by Anne Heywood takes the plunge, leaving her abusive father's house and starting life anew as a woman. Through trial and error she learns the skills and consequences of being a woman as well as the terrible problems involved in not being considered fully female.

The look of the film is total 70's complete with bellbottoms and sappy soundtrack. The story is also somewhat unrealistic. For example, Wendy is able to become fully passable with only a short time of practicing in private. The film goes on to explore many interesting consequences of a life "under cover" when all she wants is a simple life as a normal woman. With all it's obvious faults, "I Want What I Want" contains some surprisingly touching and sensitive moments. And although it appears to have been a very cheap production, the filmmakers manage to do quite a lot with their limited resources. For example, background sounds of cars and dogs during some of Wendy's terrifying moments in public give an eerily realistic feel.

I always find it disappointing when a woman is cast for the part of a man pretending to be a woman. "Victor Victoria" is a fine film using the same gimmick but I find it very difficult to see Julie Andrews as a man even though she gives about the best performance she was capable of. The same goes for this film. Contrast that with "The Crying Game" where the illusion is perfect due to exceptional casting.

Probably controversial in it's time, "I Want What I Want" is a clearly a small film but one worth watching by anyone interested transgender issues.

This is a documentary of 'drag nights' among New York's underclass. Queens are interviewed and observed preparing for and competing in many 'balls'. The people, the clothes, and the whole environment are outlandish. Written by Robbie Smith {robsmith@u.washington.edu}

An unblinking behind the scenes story of fashion obsessed New Yorkers who created "voguing" and drag balls , and turned these raucous celebrations into a powerful expression pf personal pride. The world within a world is instantly familiar, filled with ambitions, desires and yearnings that reflect America itself. PARIS IS BURNING is an intimate portrait of one urban community, a world in which the allure of high fashion, status and wealth becomes an affirmation of love, acceptance and joy. Written by Dream

I think TransAmerica was good. You have to have a sense of humor and there were a couple of dumb spots, but overall it was very good - and Felicity Hauffman (did I butcher her name? sorry) was nominated for an Oscar!

I think they could have had a real trans woman play the part though. Andrea James or Calpernia Adams come to mind of course.

Here in San Diego about 40 local trans people all went together to the opening. It was so much fun going with friends and people you know.

Transgeneration a special on HBO was also pretty good.

Soldiers Girl of course is special.

One thing, I remember a couple of years ago talking online with a girl who was one of the extras in TransAmerica. Apparently the people on the set were not clued in and (possibly inadvertently) disrespectful of the trans actors.

At any rate there are more and more trans films coming out and dealing with mainstream issues not just drag queens and prostitutes.

Best,
TS Jamie :-)

Maybe its a generational thing, or a matter of when you transitioned, or maybe I'm just touchy, but I hated trans-America. First of all, for a road trip movie, it was boring as hell. Especially for a road trip movie involving trans people. Second of all, why Felicity Huffman had to create the man voice, instead of just using her own voice which could very easily pass for a trans ladies voice, is totally beyond me. Third, how her character could possibly pay for surgery working as a dishwasher is outrageous. I just found the whole thing bland and obnoxious, but that is probably just an artifact of my cultural associations.

20 centimetri, I think it is a spanish movie I dind't like it, it is almost a musical
Boys don't cry, nice movie not stricly ts-themed
Mater natura, an italian movie not so bad but not so good.
Wild side: french movie, sad movie
Belle al bar: maybe the best italian movie about this issue, the main actress is a ts who is very famous in Italy, she also was the anchorwoman of a prime-time show at the television. Her name is Eva Robins, beautiful and smart.
Kinky boots: english movie, more about drag queens than ts.
Priscilla: see above.
Ma vie en rose: I liked it, touching.
Myra Breckinridge: a visionary movie shooted in the early 70's or end 60's
Princesa an italian movie with some excessive dramatization.
Transamerica: not so bad to me, but with too much stereotypes
La moglie del soldato (the crying game): the first ts movie I've seen, before I knew transgendarism and transgenders.
I've also seen "Todo sobre mi madre" but it was in spanish and I didn't catch most of things they said.
Another Almodovar movie I've seen it's "la mala education" to me a good movie even if not stricly ts-themed.

Unfortunately most ts-movies are sad and are focused on prostitution and sex than on psicological issues.
