Update the gaming calendar for October 2007. Publisher Take-Two Interactive announced Thursday (August 2) that "Grand Theft Auto IV" is being delayed until early next year, due to "technological issues."

The company is targeting its second quarter of next fiscal year, allowing for a release sometime between February 1 and April 30. In a conference call with investors, a Take-Two executive narrowed that down, saying, "Putting 'GTA IV' out in the Easter season isn't the worst thing in the world."

Rockstar Games, developer of the "GTA" series, has been proudly promoting the previously announced October 16 release date on Xbox 360 and PS3 for months, with no hint of a pending delay (see " 'GTA IV' Revealed: Game Returning To City That Made It Famous"). Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said those plans changed a day ago after Take-Two executives reviewed the latest build of the game. The decision to delay was made within 24 hours.

"We determined today that a delay in the launch was essential to ensure the quality of 'Grand Theft Auto IV,' " Zelnick said in the conference call late Monday.

"The reason it is being delayed is almost strictly technological problems — not problems, but challenges," Zelnick said. He said it was a challenge to create an ambitious game for two very different platforms but declined to say what the hitches actually were. "The technology that we're developing for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' is pretty complex. It's a big game. There are technical challenges across the board on both PS3 and 360. Our intention is to create a game that is the same experience on both 360 and PS3. I know that there have been rumors in the market about frame-rate and some other issues. We don't think it's helpful or beneficial to go into what the technological issues are. We are pushing the envelope on both platforms."

Zelnick declined to say how the delay would affect the "GTA IV" downloadable bonus content previously announced as exclusive to Xbox 360 and slated for early 2008.

Previous major "GTA" console games were released like clockwork in the in October 2001, 2002 and 2004. This marks the series' first major delay.

Zelnick guaranteed that the game won't be delayed again. "Having been mistaken once, we don't want to be mistaken twice."

Take-Two also announced Thursday that "Manhunt 2," currently suspended from release because it has run afoul of ratings boards in the U.S. and U.K. (see "Rockstar Games' 'Manhunt 2' Slapped With 'Adults Only' Rating"), would not be released any time in its current fiscal year, which ends on Halloween

I have San Andreas and like it quite a bit; however, some of the missions are just ridiculous (the low rider competition, etc.). I really hope they include a crack for skipping missions in IV.

be glad you don't own the stock (TTWO). It was $25 three months ago. On the delay news, it's down another 15% today, after a very rough summer.
Hate to give advice, but it could be worth a shot here at $14.50.
Assuming they can keep to there new roll-out schedule for 2008 (quite a big if).

This delay could be a minor bump, but it also could be the beginning of the end for GTA and Rockstar Games. The debacle with Manhunt 2 was just the tip of the iceberg for these guys. Take Two also has the misfortune of having aquired the gaming industry albatross of Duke Nukem Forever. That alone could destroy the company just by the nature of it's decade old curse. It's too bad, too, Civ 4 is under the umbrella with the rest of the titles.

Personally, I do not see this stock rising. Things are getting spread too thin.

You must be joking. the lowrider mission is grerat. you just got no rhythm white boy!

and the bit where CJ jumps from a light plane mid-air onto a jumbo jet and climbs inside? that is NOT ridiculous?

or the 'girlfriend' missions, once i realised that they were not essential to the storyline i couldnt be bothered running off to check them while in middle of some gang war.

Yeah. This sure does suck. XBOX 360 was starting to look really good lately. Halo 3 and GTA4. They also finally lowered the price for the system. Guess I will wait awhile longer before buying. I am still happy playing my PS2 and old XBOX.

LOL... I clearly stand corrected. As far as my suffering from a serious case of white boy syndrome is concerned, I can do a really mean robot:

Pachter says PS3 complications might have delayed GTA IV

"There's been much speculation lately due to the heart-breaking announcement that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV for the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360 would be delayed for at least six months. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter offers us an explanation why.

Pachter says "we think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognise how far away from completion the game truly was until recently."

Pachter also has an idea as to how this affected the Xbox 360 version's launch date. He adds "we think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version."

A possible repercussion, according to Pachter, would be negative feedback from the investors. He adds that the Take-Two management could have foreseen this and might have been able to soften the situation if correct action was applied.

This is probably the first big fumble on the part of the new management, says the analyst. "Given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure," he concludes."
