Virginians vacationing for the July 4 holiday might want to drive extra slowly and safely as of midnight Sunday morning.

Traffic fines in the state are set to rise dramatically, ranging from the $750 fine for driving without a license to the eyebrow raising $1,050 speeding ticket.

Dave Albo, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, believes the state ran out of other options.

"I don't know what else to do except make the punishments so tough on these massive speeders that they won't do it anymore," said Albo, the author of the new legislation and a Republican from Fairfax County.

The maximum fines are for drivers who are caught going 20 miles or more over the speed limit, which is now legally considered "reckless."

Virginian Carla Watkins said the reckless behavior she sees keeps her off the roads altogether.

"That's why I walk, because I see crazy stuff," Watkins said, adding that she's more comfortable when her son rides the bus.

Alexandria, Va., police officer Patrick McGee said he supports the law, but doesn't know if it will fix that "crazy stuff" on the state's roads.

"It is going to take a while to sink into people," said McGee. "Do I think it is going to make a huge difference? No."

Indeed, the law won't apply to all drivers, just Virginians driving on Virginia's roads. Out-of-state drivers will continue to pay the standard fines. And in fact, deterring bad driving is just one of the bill's aims -- and not even necessarily the primary one.

The Virginia laws are similar to those in New Jersey, Michigan, North Carolina and Texas -- all designed to raise tens of millions of dollars for state transportation. Virginia legislators hope to raise between $65 and $80 million for transportation projects this year alone from the new fines.

Critics say that essentially makes it a regressive tax.

"It is going to slam the people at the lower economic scale, because it treats the day laborer who gets pulled over the same way it treats a doctor," said Thaddeus Furlong, a defense attorney.

WTF happened to Virginians? It's time to start decapitating lawmakers over shit like this. If I speed, I'll gladly pay a ticket. In fact, make it a big fine. But FUCK! A grand large just for not paying attention to the odometer?

Hello. This is Kabuki reporting from VA. A state that needs millions of dollars of road work. Of course the state government can't agree on a proper transportation bill, so they're going to fine everyone. Besides the fines for traffic violations, the state inspection price is going up (I need to move back to Miami...no car inspections in FL). You'll also get taxed more for any car repairs. Toll roads are also scheduled to come back in my neck of the woods. I really don't want a bridge tunnel toll. It's already slow trying to drive to Norfolk and Va. Beach (does anybody know the Hampton Roads area...besides military guys) without tolls everywhere. The politicians never get hurt by these bills. Only the working class citizens will struggle.

That's because you live on the front lines, brother! Libtards are attempting to take over.

If you fail to confront Vader on this shit, you'll have your paved roads and a big nanny to hover over you and point out your flaws and slap your hand away from the transfat.

I graduated Hamptom Univerity down there in '06 so i know how backed up it can get. That area is in need of alot of road work, because everything is spread out so the roads are the only way around the area.

I am originally from Virginia (Winchester). I wouldn't live there if I was ordered to by GOD him/herself. The entire state is full of Commie Pinko Faggots. I used to call New Jersey the anal cavity of the Earth...It moved south!!! :puke

VA also and yes these fines are bullshit. Commonwealth ftl....I hate it. Bad enough VA is strict about its laws as far as what u can put on your car but now they are taking tickets to an extreme. I'm tired of this fucking renegade state. Someone needs to oversee the overseers and stop all the bullshit.
