Subaru’s new shape Impreza has had its official coming out party in Tokyo, and for the Impreza faithful, suddenly it’s a whole new ballgame.
Many of the Imprezas you see in Japan are hardcore, tricked-out WRX STi sedans, with the occasional sprinkling of garden-variety 1.5-liter sports wagons thrown in for good measure. The Impreza now comes in any shape you like, so long as it’s the new five-door hatch (only the States gets the new sedan).
Even more revolutionary, perhaps, is Subaru’s decision to axe the fabled WRX nameplate. In Japan, what used to be the WRX now becomes the 2.0-liter turbo S-GT. With a sports body kit and producing a semi-hot 250 brake horsepower, it stickers for ¥2.467 million - ¥2.95 million (say $20,390 - $24,380).
