One way for transexuality to become more accepted by society at large is, I believe, through music and film. But then again I can't think of very many films and songs abour or featuring transgendered people. Can you?

Here are my suggestions, in random order:

SONGS

- Lola- The Kinks
"Lola smiled and took me by the hand...And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man...Well I'm not the world's most masculine man...But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man...And so is Lola..."

- Take a Walk on the Wild Side- Lou Reed
"Holly came from Miami F.L.A. ... hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A. ...plucked her eyebrows on the way...shaved her legs and then he was a she..."

- Dude looks like a lady- Aerosmith
"She had the body of a venus...Lord, imagine my surprise..."

And a couple of almosts:

- Boys and Girls- Blur
"Girls who are boys...Who like boys to be girls...Who do boys like they’re girls...Who do girls like they’re boys...Always should be someone you really love..."

- Get Back- The Beatles
"Sweet loretta martin thought she was a woman...But she was another man..."

FILMS

- Princesa (with the transexual prostitute played by an actual transexual)

- Myra Breckenbridge (Raquel Welch as a rather unpleasant mysogynistic M2F)

- The World According to Garp (John Lithgow delivers the killer line: "I mean, I had mine removed surgically under general anesthesia. But to have it bitten off in a Buick...")

- All About my Mother and Bad Education (both by Pedro Almodovar)

- Woman on Top (Harold Perrineau looks pretty sexy as .ca Jones)

- Gaudi Afternoon (I actually guessed that Marcia Gay Harden's character was a TG before it was revealed- and Marcia Gay Harden is a woman!)

- Rock Star (Dagmara Dominczyk had a pretty small part as a preop PR girl)

- The Last Seduction (blink and you'll miss this revelation- Mike left his wife Stacy because he found out she was a preop...interesting...)

- Boy's Don't Cry (the film based on the tragic story of Teena Brandon kind of qualifies, but Teena never fully made the transition before her life was cruelly ended)

- Soldier's Girl (Another tragic true story)

- Normal (TV movie with Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson)

And a couple of films about drag queens:

- To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (John Leguizamo didn't look too bad)

- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (about two drag queens and a transexual)

I haven't managed to see all these films, and I'm sure there are many others I haven't seen or can't remember(I can also remember a horrible film from the 70s or 80s with a M2F serial killer- anyone know the name so I can avoid ever watching it again?). Throw in your suggestions!

From the Stone Temple Pilots song Crackerman

"Trippin’ as I’m thinkin’

He’s a man, he’s a man

How did you miss out The Crying Game? That was a shock to me!
Also:
Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink) - excellent French movie.
Doberman - another cool French movie with one of the bank robbers as transsexual.

US television:
The Golden Girls - ran for years with Bea Arthur playing a transsexual accepted by her mother and friends (although never actually mentioned!).

Many examples on US television; I'm sure there are others, but these are prominent:

Nip/Tuck, with Famke Janssen playing a post-op TS for most of the second season, a sexual predator who plays on the underage son of one of the plastic surgeons as a "life coach" (but with a well-played scene visiting a clinic specializing in SRS).

Ally McBeal: two storylines, one featuring Stephanie (played by openly gay actor and GLAAD board member Wilson Cruz), a transgendered fashion designer who also turns tricks to pay the bills. Ally defends Stephanie on the basis of an insanity plea based on "transvestite fetishism" and "gender dysphoria" and who is ultimately murdered by a john who, according to a cop, freaked when he found out she was a man. The second, which played out over several episodes and two distinct story arcs, featured Lisa Edelstein as Cindy, a pre-op transsexual who the firm represents and with whom one of the lawyers, Mark (played by James LeGros), falls in love but discovers he can't handle the fact that she is transgendered. The show imho is a mix of exploitation and sensitivity, which relays a conflicted message.

CSI: Ch-ch-changes episode, featuring several transsexuals in a storyline centered on the brutal slaying of a TS. Several of the TS in the show are played by real TS, which is a positive thing, and much of value is shared, though personally I thought the show over-emphasized the seedy side of the life.

In music, there's Cyndi Lauper's song "Ballad of Cleo & Joe" about a TV who lives as Joe by day at work but lives for stepping out at night as Cleo:

"And he works his body just to be somebody. There's a woman in the mirror looking like a dream. And he works his body...and he feels somebody...and the working boy becomes a dancing queen."

In 2001/02 CBS ran a series starring Richard Dreyfus called the Education of Max Bickford. Set in a small town University, Max's best friend Steve returned from a sabbatical as Erica (Helen Shaver) after SRS. She was portrayed very positively.

A list (which includes some already mentioned)

As Girls Go - Suzanne Vega ("99.9" album, 1992)

Boy or a Girl - Imperial Drag
The overall message could be about any relationship headfuck but seems to be about an attraction to a TGirl, with gender bent phrases like "Do you feel misunderstood?.......I feel straight but I'm not so sure" and the title question "Are you a boy or a girl?" Eric Dover and his Imperial Drag are a wonderful and talented throwback to the sound of the glam rock epoch.

Diamond Dogs - DavidBowie - Sex ch-ch-changin' is the theme here "with your silicone hump and your ten inch stump"

Drag Queens in Limousines - Mary Gauthier -

Dude Looks Like a Lady - Aerosmith -

I Wanna Be a Beauty Queen - It was theme song for British film of same name.)

Lady Stardust - David Bowie - the serene song of the Ziggy Stardust epoch;

Lola - The Kinks - Lola

Now I'm Your Mom - Talkingheads song about a parental sex change. It's on the album "Uh Oh" sung by David Byrne.

Rebel Rebel - DavidBowie - the ultimate gender bender song that went so mainstream that many people mistakenly overlook its transgender topic as just a glam-rock tune;

Secret Girls - Sonic Youth -

Sweet Dreams - Annie Lennox - a song about pansexual freedom

Sweet Transvestite - Rocky Horror Picture Show -

Take a Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed -

Two Headed Sex Change - The Cramps -

Last but not least: The Lumberjack Song - Monty Python

Movies:

Hedwig & The Angry Inch (better as a play)
Dressed To Kill - Michael Caine as a cross-dressing killer
Bird Cage - Gene Hackman!
Psycho - Norman as Mom

There was a real good episode of CBS's cold case files (not the A & E show) about a transgendered love affair and it was done real well. CBS also did (as someone mentioned) the 100th episode with Cassandra a bartender at Diva's in San Francisco. I thought the aformentioned Princessa was good, their was an episode of Girlfriends with Dania/Nikki although it was somewhat negative kind of an Ace Ventura thing. At least they got a real T though. Also mentioned the Crying Game was a very good film. The thing for me is how many of the mentioned films above are actually about drag queens and not transsexuals, there is a difference. We have to wait for The Chick Magnet to come out, and let's hope they don't cut the beautiful Dannielle Foxx out of Ms. Congeniality 2.

Whoopsie! The obvious one (and a pretty good film too) and I did mean to include it, but then it slipped my mind.

With regards to the Golden Girls, if it was never actually mentioned, how can you tell? As for all the other TV series, I've never seen most of them (I live across the pond) but I'll check them out on DVD.

Notice also I haven't included cross-dressing films or songs, because there are too many to mention: Mrs Doubtfire, Tootsie, Some Like it Hot, and songs like I'm a Boy (by the Who) and The LumberJack song by Monty Python.

A few more I've come up with:

Flawless (actually about a drag queen)
Just like a Woman
Orlando
M. Butterfly
Farewell My Concubine

There's also a bunch of body-switching films where women enter male bodies and vice versa, such as Switch, Prelude to a Kiss and others.

But from the poll I can see that we all agree that the entertainment industry's portrayal of TGs has, with the exception of mostly arthouse and foreign language films, been pretty negative...

seanchai, Please don't get this site in trouble with the legions of Bea Arthur fans out there.

Did anyone see Holiday Heart? It featured Ving Rhames as a Drag Queen. And yes he did look as bad as one imagines, but its a good movie.

In cartoons The Oblongs (shown on The Cartoon Network during their Adult orientated Programming) has a transsexual Bartender. So did Shrek. I see a theme here.

IFC shows a film by the name of "Different For Girls". I'm sure someone already mentioned it.

I thought so, too, but the director of Shrek 2 has been adamant that Larry King's character was just an extremely manly GG.

I surprised nobody has mentioned the song "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers out of Las Vegas:

"Somebody Told Me"

Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you

Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

No one saw the movie escape from LA, so no one mentioned Pam Grier playing a TS in that one.

Also forgot about another episode of CSI in which a big movie star sleeps with 2 asian girls and one turns out to be a TS so he kills them both. When they uncover one girl in a golf course sand trap Nick (George Eads) says frank and beans. Indicating she has male genitals.

Law and Order: SVU had two well done episodes. The first dealt with a set of twins ( a boy and a girl) who turned out to both be boys (one's circumscsion(sp) went awry.

The second episode involved a rape murder. The girl who was almost raped turned out to be a TS. When her boyfriend found out he committed suicide. The next part of the episode dealt with her attempt to get transfered to a female prison. She ended up getting assaulted in rikers.

Never saw it, but it sounds like its based on the true and tragic story of Bruce/ Brenda Reimer. I quote from a previous posting of mine. I wrote:

Recently I saw an interesting TV programme on Discovery- the true story of a boy named Bruce Reimer who was conditioned by an 'expert' psychiatrist into being a girl after a botched circumcision left him with little genitals to speak of. The procedure was previously applied to hermaphrodites only. The newborn underwent various procedures and took hormones and lived all his young life as Brenda. Unhappy throughout his/her childhood, young Brenda behaved very much like a little boy. Eventually Brenda's father told his rebellious child the truth. Brenda's first though was to hunt down the doctors who botched his circumsision. Instead, he left home and tried to begin his new life as a man, becoming David. He commited suicide last year aged 38.

I just thought of another tv show which featured TS girls: Sex in the City, when Samantha moved to the meat packing district and had a neighborhood war going on with the trannys living on her block, out loud and late at night. They fought back and forth, until Samantha had the wits to invite them over for a party, and they made friends.

I don't know the NY scene very well, though the girls in the episode seemed to represent that scene pretty well. Most were definitely not passable as I recall.

Here's another from this season, sensitively portrayed: Veronica Mars. On one episode, the teenage sleuth helps a friend track down his missing father, only to find out that his father had SRS and is now a woman, living with a man fifty (iirc) miles away. At least once a week, the post-op father drives to the video store the son works at to rent videos and interact a little bit with her son without giving away that she's his father. The kid freaks at first, but later seems to come to terms.

Eva is also in a mainstream movie you can find in Blockbusters in some locations. Called "Mascara". The movie also has Romy Hagg as well as many of the Italian Drag show girls of the era. A good look at the underground TS world of 80's Italy. Nothing like today.

One of my favorite tgirl movies which I haven't seen mentioned yet is Iron Ladies. It's been called a sports movie with a difference: the true story of a Thai volleyball team composed of gays, transvestites and transsexuals which won the Thai national title in 1996.

This is a very nicely made movie about transgendered people and it's been one of the most popular international releases from Thailand. There's been a sequel as well (but haven't seen that one yet).

I first saw Iron Ladies at a big outdoor summer screening here in Amsterdam which was part of the yearly gay pride weekend, but it's also on DVD. I can recommend it as an antidote to films about transsexuals with tragic endings and as a good way to practice your Thai

Just saw the Toby Keith (US Country/western music performer) music video for "I Love This Bar".

There are no lyrics refering to TSs, but in the video this guy starts pushing up on this great lokkin' chic who happens to be taller than him. After makin' out, and dancin close stuff they cut to another scene. When they come back the guy is going to the men's room, where he finds his beautiful damsel standing at the urinal! When she comes out of the bathroom, the rest of the guys react as if they already knew and it was no big deal. (Hey, I'd do her.)

(Yeah, it was a country/western music video, and the song is a hit and Toby Keith is very famous in the genre. And no smart-ass comments about me watchin' country music please!)

I wasn't referring to TV show episodes as well, 'cos I suppose there's been a few of those, but since we've started mentioning them, here are a couple more.

I seem to remember an episode of Spin City (in its Michael J Fox days) where Carter tricks Stuart into dating a gorgeous blonde transexual. There was also a Seinfeld episode where Jerry went on a date with a woman (who may have been a TS) who had "man hands" as he called them.

Despite being a fan of both series, I don't think either shone a very positive light on TGs.

GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS is a campy drag flick with the famous Miss Coco from TRICK. As far as tv series goes, QUEER AS FOLK as transgender storylines as well. I just saw BRIDE & PREJUDICE (hindi inspired move based loosely on Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice) and they had some crossdressers and transsexuals dancing on the streets with the main characters in the beginning and ending song sequences. Even the spoof reels in the end of the credits showed them.

Let's not forget probably the greatest proponent of tgs in film: Pedro Almodóvar. While occasionally not positive images (father in All About My Mother, a character in Bad Education-I won't say which cuz it might spoil the film), Pedro has always featured tgs, including one of the most beautiful in creation, the great Bibi Andersen, who is so accepted in Spain that she appears on variey shows on tv and her love life is covered just like anyone else's in People type magazines.

Someone mentioned "Soldier's Girl",that's damned good movie.

In the very early 80's there was a movie that was essentially a bio-pic of Toronto drag performer. It was a real snapshot of the TV/TS scene pre-AIDS in Toronto and NYC. I can't remember the name of the pic or the performer now?

"Kiss of The Spiderwoman" is highly stylized, but the scenes of Raoul Julia's flashbacks/dreams give a glimpse of the Brazilian TS/TV street scene in those days.

The Tubes had a video that features Alexis Arquette dressed, sharing a car in a funhouse ride w/ a little boy. I think the title of the song was "One in Million"? The Tubes stage shows featured all sorts of alternative lifestyle folk on stage in the 70's. They used to get banned at all sorts of venues.

Redman- A day of Sooperman Lover

-"Well how the hell did you save him?
Are you Police/Undercover?"
-"Naw baby,
The "S" on my chest stands for:"

Chorus: Sooperman Lover (Yeah!)
Baby call him the Sooperman Lover
Something wrong...
Something wrong, indeed
Something wrong. Yes, yes indeed...

Verse 2

She was grateful
Lookin' for ways to repay me
No money,
A donut, and some..uhm coffee maybe?
Of course
What kind of sauce(?) did I take?
Make my donut Jelly
And my coffee Sanka
We sat,
Unhooked the cape from the back
She felt my arms
'Cause my pythons looked stacked
"Goddamn, Sooperlover!
Yo shit looks thick
Tell me, how strong are you
With muscles like this? (you bad motherfucker!)"

(I'm stronger than a locomotive)

I'll keep hittin ya like Rocky
She ran to the room
And came back with a (?)
Negligee, high-heeled shoes,
Wit' a blunt in her mouth
Ready to roll up,
Hey hold up/ she had the dollar fold(ed) up
To mix the coke with the smoke
Yo, she was no joke
She took a sniff,
Some got on her top lip
That bitch stuck out her tounge
and gave her top lip a lick
and said: -"Here baby, hit it."
-"Naw baby, I ain't wit' it
You'd need more than a body
To make me wanna hit that shit!"
But I'll hit the blunt
So she took out her fronts
Cracked the philly
Opened the bag and laid out the skunk
Then I took a long pull
It was hype/ outtasite
We ran into the bedroom
So I cracked my pants for head room
Later, tossed the covers
And oh, brother! I was wit' it
Ready to hit it
Asked my dick, "YO, WHASSUP GEE?"
"Yo man, shit's thick"
Licked her down her belly
And kissed her on her back
Stuck my hands between the legs
And I felt the bozack(!)
As big as mine (YO!)
This bitch must be craze,
So I threw my suit on
And I was Swayze...
'Cause I'm the:

They Might Be Giants has a number of songs that can be interpreted as playing with gender. The two that are the clearest are "How can I sing like a girl?" (obviously) and S-E-X-X-Y.

"How can I sing like a girl
And not be stigmatized
By the rest of the world?
Tell me how can I sing like a girl
And not be objectified
As if I were a girl?"

The trick with S-E-X-X-Y is to interpret is as SEX = XY, the person's sex is male.

"There she is
Standing on the bed
Cookie in one hand, wig on her head
S-E-X-X-Y
X because it's extra baby
Y because it's extra baby
Unnoticed by few
Very very few
And that includes you"

The girl has something 'extra' that many people notice. ;-)

Made for TV movie: A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story (http://www.lifetimetv.com/movies/originals/agirllikeme.php)

This is one of those with "real transgender women" which you'd think would be positive right? I was online once with a woman who was an extra for the show... when they did the screen tests the "real transgendered women" looked like women!

Oops...

So they got the makeup people to ugly them them up so they looked like what they were "supposed" to look like for the stereotypes to play right. If they hadn't, the audience wouldn't have understood how authentic the scene was. Or something.

Yay for the media![/sarcasm]

didn't see mention of "Victor/Victoria".

Synopsis:
The place and time is Paris during the 1930s. Men who can sing as women are all the rage. Desperate for a gig, Victoria, a woman, disguises herself as a man pretending to be a woman. She is all the rage in Paris, as audiences fully believe that she is a he who is just pretending to be a she. Things get even more complicated after the gangster, King Marchan, happens upon a show with Victoria. To his dismay, King Marchan finds that he is falling in love with this man – Victoria. Meanwhile, King's tough bodyguard, Squash, falls in love with Victoria's truly male friend, Toddy. In the end, Victor reveals that he is really Victoria meaning that King Marchan is not homosexual, as he feared.

IFC shows a film by the name of "Different For Girls". I'm sure someone already mentioned it.

I have seen 'Holiday Heart, twice on BET. I was pleasantly surprised
at Ving Rhames ability to portray a drag queen. It was actually a pretty
decent movie, a bit of a tear-jerker.

Another tear-jerker was Different For Girls, which had a number of poignant moments.

I was listening to old compilation of NYC mid-70's punk the the other day. Everyone's favorite punk rock TS,Wayne/Jayne County and the Back Street Boys were doing "Max's Kansas City" on it.

That is the question. They are always casting a genetic male or female inadequate for the role. I am sure there are t-women out there who could fulfill the roles, but they are usually relegated to stand-in/extra-types to lend an air of authenticity. How about be authentic by casting a T-women in the role?

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ugh it really pisses me off when they butch up women just to make it "oh ok yeah i see how she could be a man" to middle america... why do we need to dumb shit down? there are a few, NOT MANY, ts women that are pretty enough to play pretty transexuals... to have women playing transexuals is like saying... transexuals arent actually this pretty so we have to use a real woman. fn lame.

Another question: Should TSs in films be played by actual TSs (like the girl in Princessa)? And would that help the TG movement?

The reason why they chose real GG's tp play tg part is simply because they want gurantee at the box office in terms of $$. Also it does help if people knew the actor starring in said movie. If its just some tg's they dont know muchless never heard off I doubt the film would make waves, make money etc. having real TG's as actors playing the parts of tg's would be nice but rightnow it's not that feasible. Princessa was a little different because that was a foreign film and an indie at that. Remember Soldier's girl? I didnt think It wasnt even shown in the movie theaters but on cable (Showtime)?

American tv shows like CSI is a bit different. They actually hire tg actors to play the tg parts. And I think that is somewhat a start, right? ;)

We've already said how annoying it is that they use GGs and sometimes even guys to play TSs and TGs. But can TG actors and actresses make it in Hollywood? I'm not asking if they are good looking enough (the answer to that is a definitive and resounding YES).

We had a thread earlier where someone suggested that it's difficult to succeed once you've mad hardcore porn. I would say that success outside the movie industry or on TV is possible but it's difficult to work as a serious actress once a girl has done porn. I think there is a stigma to porn. And maybe it's rubbed off a little on how people see transwomen.

Soldier's girl is an interesting one because it's based on a true story and because- I think- Calpernia Addams acted as a conultant on the Showtime movie, but the part was played by a man

Jerry Springer
by Al Yankovic

Lyrics:

It's been one week since we got to see
Cheatin' lovers and cousins that marry
Five days since they had the show
With the hermaphrodite, the slut, and the crack ho
Three days since we heard the tale
About the guy who learned his woman was a she-male
Yesterday it occurred to me
That I've been watchin' a bit too much Jerry Springer

Holy cow, d'you see it last week?
Well, they had this one freak
Who sucker-punched his whole family
Do you recall when the brawl
Became a total free-for-all
And Jerry's in the middle tryin' to be the referee
Hey, see the stripper with the implants
She likes to lap dance
And date the boyfriend of her mother
Now here come's Jerry's next guest
And it's a slugfest
'Cause it's her trailer trash brother
Nymphomaniac is back on crack
It's like "When Animals Attack"
They all exhibit reprehensible behavior
Hit 'em in the nose, tear off their clothes
Step on their toes, that's how it goes
They get so violent they have to sign a waiver

They're always swearin', cursin', kickin' butt, and pointin' blame
On the air? They don't care, they've got no shame
There was one guy who I'm sure felt a little strange
When he found out that his wife had a sex change
They have a tendency to scream and yell constantly
They have a history of ripping off their shirts

It's been one week since they had the fight
With the Siamese twins and the transvestite
Five days since that awful brawl
They still haven't got the blood off the wall
It's been three days since the bitter fued
Between the KKK and that gay Jewish black dude
Yesterday, finally dawned on me
I'm spendin' way too much time on that Jerry Springer

Guy Guest : Baby, I've been sleepin' with your sister
Gal Guest : Oh? Well, which one?
Guy Guest : All of them
Gal Guest : Oh! Well, I've been sleepin' with your best friend Jake!
Guy Guest : Yah? Well, well me too!
Gal Guest : Oh!
Guy Guest : And I've sleepin' with your dog Woofie!
(barking)
Gal Guest : Woofie, you b-tch!
Gal Guest : Well, I'm also sleepin' with your pet goat!
(baaahhing)
Guy Guest : That goat doesn't love you!

Once you start watchin', there's just no stoppin'
Your brain shuts down, then your IQ's droppin'
Jerry's the king of confrontation
He's a sensation
He puts the 'sin' in syndication
It's totally worthless, like a bad check
It's like a train wreck
Don't wanna stare but you can't look away
Like Sally Jesse he does talk shows
But with more weirdos
The ratings jumpin' higher everyday
If you've seen the show, well then you know
It's just as low as you can go
The guests are tacky and they're lacking in their hygiene
And pretty soon some ugly goon
Comes in the room and then it's BOOM
In the face of some unsuspecting drag queen

Well it's the kind of show where people scream obscenities
Yankin' hair, throwin' chairs at their hubbies
"Jerry! Jerry!" Now the crowd starts their favorite chant
Should I turn off my TV? I just can't
I have a tendency to watch it religiously
I have a history of taping each one

It's been one week since the show about
Psycho killers with problems they should work out
Five days since the big surprise
When some loser's wife said she's still dating twenty guys
Three days since he interviewed
A bunch of psychic porn star midgets who were all nude
Yesterday, it occurred to me
That I've been watchin' a bit too much Jerry Springer
Tired of wastin' my time on that Jerry Springer
I've got way too much class to watch Jerry Springer
Come over here and pull on my finger

This is a common theme in sitcoms, they have had episodes like that for "The Steve Harvey Show" and the old Nell Carter show "Gimme A Break".

On an episode of the Showtime series "Soulfood" a client of Boris Kodjoe uses his pad to fool around with a girl who turns out to be trans to his dismay.

Honestlly , i would love to see more "Transsexuals" act, when it comes to the part of a transsexual being played by a male actor dressing up like woman, or a Tv, I find it it looses its essnence being that a Ts Couldnt play the role. For exsample i loved "Soliders girl " And it was beautifully done ,, exept for the fact that it was a male actor playing the part of the Ts And its been like that in a few to alot movies i have seen. The movie Prinzesa , was 1 of the very few movies i have seen that its based on a transsexuals life or story of.. That was played by a transsexual and other as well in the movie were aswell. Spanish director Pedro Almadovar is infamous for using Transexuals in his films,, Like bibi anderson, Antonia san juan, to name a few.... Of course in Europe its alot more open towards Gender , sexuality and even Transsexuals.... I just would love to see Transsexuals in films depicted in a diffrent light other than the stereotypical prostitute, or the decieving one who never tells the guys the truth and so forth. Yes, all of these stereotypes do exsit, but i would love to see a movie that will shine a light on Transsexuals not leave them in the dark .

I haven't managed to see all these films, and I'm sure there are many others I haven't seen or can't remember(I can also remember a horrible film from the 70s or 80s with a M2F serial killer- anyone know the name so I can avoid ever watching it again?). Throw in your suggestions!

Best portrayals ever!!! :P

Back in the late 70's (probably 1978) there was a show on NBC called Real People. They did a feature on Finnochios (hope that's the right spelling) in San Fran. It was the first time I saw real life trannies and CD's. Although only ten years old at the time, the seed was planted and I was never the same from that day on.

Nick Nolte also did a movie called Q&A in which he (a crooked cop) stangled a kind of good looking CD.

There was also a show on CBS in the early to mid 70's called Medical Center. In one episode Robert (Brady Bunch) Reed played a doctor seeking SRS. Robert Reed as a transsexual was definitely not cute.
