what's your view on Thaksin Shinawatra and his time in power?
I ask because he's looking at getting involved in Premier League Football over here in the UK at the moment.
TIA

he's a smart guy who ran Thailand as his own business and basically wiped his ass w/ the constitution....so a typical politician really.

Forbes had him listed as one of 4 Thai billionaires in 2005

He owned the largest telecommunications company in Thailand and sold it to a Singapore firm for 2-3 billion USD.nothing wrong with that on the surface reallly except....

1. its against the Thai constitution for a foreign company to own more than 49% of a thai business.

2. he had the ownership of the company transferred into his childrens names prior to the sale to avoid paying taxes on the transaction.

He is very popular in the north where most of the peasants, rice farmers and the undereducated live.Thaksin provided the farmers with lo cost or free medical and other benefits. To them he is a hero and such issues as tax fraud and breaking the constitution really doesnt have any bearing on the day to day life of the people from the north.

I know I wouldnt want him owning the Lakers...so good luck with that.

Bearded ya mustve been snoozing when i posted this

http://www.hungangels.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=11489&highlight=thai+coup

the outcome of yesterdays decision resulted in little violence BUT..
They banned Thaksins political party for 5 years from any politics...

Kinda like the military overthrowing Bush and banning republicans...now some might argue thats a good thing but you couple this decision with the fact that the military junta has yet to hold the promised elections(we are hearing December now) and now the banning of a party based on fraud(Find something NOT fraudulent in Thailand and I'll eat it) and things here are not looking promising in the least.

Since the military took control of the country there has been a 500% increase in blocked websites, including Youtube...very sad to see this country sliding into what seems to be a pure dictatorship...lord knows what will happen once the King kicks the bucket.

On a brighter note...I spent the day like any good expat would fishing at Topcats

http://www.fishinginthailand.com/

I landed a 30lb Siamese Carp and it put up little fight, later last night i hooked into an absolute beast who was taking line out and making the reel scream in agony...got him literally within a meter of the shore and he broke off on 30lb test...oh the one that got away! Sigh....

I guess the question is: What do you think of the Democrat party? It looks like they will take the elections.

The stock market has been doing well and a couple of my stocks have gone up at a nice clip lately. I may add some more cash.

The locals have been big sellers and if they come back we could be looking at a nice run.

Any idea why the locals continue to sell? I know the selling started as a protest to Thaksin.

No clue mate..never been one for the market or its patterns or why they happen....

the only thing I can guess is that currently the Thai baht is currently sitting at 34 to 1 USD which is killing tourists as it used to be 45-1...more drama.
