Today I am a VERY happy girl....

8 years ago (in my previous life) much to my regret I had to sell all (2,000) of my records and my 1210's as there wasnt much point in having decks with no house to put them in.....!!

It was one of the worst things I have ever done....

Anyway..

Last night on Ebay I bought 2 x 1210's in flight cases with an 'intimidation Don II' mixer..... hurraah!!!

I'm going to pick them up from London this afternoon... :O))))))))))

Do any of you own record/CD decks ?

What sort of music do you play ?

Do you ever play in any clubs ?

Can you tell me anything at all about the 'intimidation Don II' mixer... ie. is it any good ?

And lastly do you know of any good on-line forums/websites that are worth a visit ?

Any help would be most appreciated...

xx

I thought the Don II was a fairly old mixer...

I paid 411.00 for the two decks (Perfect condition) 2 aluminium flight cases and the mixer which I thought was a pretty good price...

Was pretty much expecting to get a new mixer asap... allthough this one will do for now..

To be honest Rez I really had my heart set on the 1210's as I'm used to them and wanted to stick to the industry/club standard as hoping to play in a club or two in the future...

Jennifer, I love your spirit and the way you have of putting things! That mixer looks like it can do a lot, never mind if it's old. Congrats sister.
In case anyone doesn't know (but cares!), vinyl is still the medium of choice for audiophiles interested in a medium that stands the test of time and it sounds the best too.

I am a fellow DJ myself. I spin on CD decks cheaper then buying vinyl:P. The music I spin is Trance, Progressive, and some house. My setup is 2x denon s3500 1x pioneer djm-600 mixer 1x pioneer hdj-1000 pro. I play in clubs from Atlanta, Ga and up in Ottawa, Ca and random gigs here and there :). As for your question on the mixer I can't speak on it. I keep my self up to date on the latest stuff but, this is the 1st time hear this brand I strongly believe in Pioneer or Allen & Heath Mixers and try http://www.djforums.com/

hey Jennifer_English! i can really relate to that thread. i am an avid record collector since my early teens (now i am in my late twenties) oops, for 15 ys now. i have thousands of records in the fields of new wave, electro, techno, some house and lots of hardcore/jungle/DnB. generally i am leaning towards oldschool .... i have hundreds of CDs, and several gigs of mp3s on my hd... but NOTHING beats vinyl. at certain moments in life i thought about selling all m1y records but i simply couldnt - thank god i didnt! i threw away my music mags tho. just to rebuy them on ebay two years ago!

anyways good luck to you and a final link from me:
http://www.subvertcentral.com

ps: two or three years ago i read on some music related message board something about a tgirl-DnB dj from philly. she looked quite hot actually, too bad i didnt save any info about her.

Wow, I love a girl who spins!!! I love it, but since I've been living the American dream of being deeply in debt, I work too much and my stuff is really collecting dust. BUT, I have 2 old 1200s, a numark 88 CD player, pioneer djm 3000 mixer and an old numark ppd mixer. I'm into trance and breakbeat (florida breaks), but I have alot of freestyle and old school hiphop on vinyl...tons!!!

I prefer vinyl for listening but much rather have mp3s for DJing. The loss in quality is so minimal on most club and event systems that you can not tell the difference at all. Now on a home stereo, a good one, you can hear the warmth on vinyl.

For real DJing, the new turntable mp3 systems are hard to beat. Carrying a PowerBook and an external hard drive sure beats lugging crates of vinyl. I have Final Scratch and love it. I want to try the new M-Audio package. The price is right @ $250.

I have tons of vinyl, gigs of MP3s, thousands of cds and cassettes.
Sampling / sequencing keyboard, Pioneer turntables, that and all
of my other A / V, computers, etc, is jacked into a number of
Numark and Radio Shack mixers.

Back in the day, I did radio djing, club work, and of course house
parties.

With all the music I have, I had thought about setting up an Internet
radio station, or podcasting, who know's.

No need to sweat, 1200s or 1210s are both excellent decks, the only difference is a slightly faster pickup, but honestly nobody is gonna slight you for using the 1200's

Agreed....the digitally remastered CDs coming out these days kick the hell outta vinyl.

Ive long heard the "warmth"arguement in favor of vinyl, and yeah well perhaps there is an acoustic difference but I def do not miss the pops, hisses and scratches that comes with vinyl

Any real audiophile will tell you reel to reel knocks vinyl into the creek, but you've got to be an old fart like me to care. ;)

I think the warmth people associate with vinyl has to do with the tube amps and well matched quality speakers that were used in it's heyday? (and most so-called "audiophiles" still use.) Play it through a solid-state amp and it doesn't have the depth that tubes give you.

Vinyl has to be in perfect condition new and kept near pristine to sound good which is damned near impossible if you use it much at all.

That being said, even the best CD's sound over-compressed to me. They don't have the dynamic range to my ear that vinyl and quality reel-to-reel does. There's always that lil' bit of digital hash in the background w/ CD's. If you grew up with them you probably don't notice it.

I've got several turntables. An ancient Onkyo is seeing service now. It's about thirty years old.

The same w/ mixers. I use an 80's Rat Shack model for the work I do at home. It has REAL vU meters which I love,(can't stand those damned LED's),an off-board 31 channel EQ and effects processor complete the set-up. I don't see the point in using a studio console when the folks at the radio station are going to compress and limit the crap out of the show when they get it? Nothing like working your ass off for great audio to have it destroyed by idiots on the transmitting end.

BTW,isn't most club DJ'ing automated these days? When I go to a club I wonder why they're paying some of these guys? A couple of laptops and guy w/some personality on the mic? I remember when it was an art and hard work. I hope it still is on the top end.

i dj a fair bit here in Dublin... everything i can get my hands on really. the night me and my friend run is a mish mash of genres playing anything from AC/DC, The Specials, James Brown to Boards of Canada, Chicks on Speed and Nine Inch Nails....

I actually got my hands on a 7" Joe Jackson - Stepping Out last Friday , played it on Saturday nite and i could see the whole dance floor collectivly smiling all at once!

as for mixers, if your going to be mixing seriously i advise getting a new mixer altogether (pioneer DJX's are vey good) but if ur just fucing around, cutting and not ealy beat matching the one you have will probably do the job fine....

SpoolDyou - I'm liking your taste in muzic.... especially the Trance... tell me is it underground tribal stuff or more the Paul Van Dyke/Tiesto sorta thing ?
Also had a look at the 1x pioneer djm-600... don't know how good it is... but it's one seriously sexy looking player !!!!! mmm mmm

mbf - 15 years eh... bet you have a few thousand by now.... particularly nice to hear you like hardcore.... a LOT of my records were early hardcore... right back to the first ever 'slammin' vinyl' records.... cant beat that hands in the air/whistle posse buzz !!! - So glad you didn't ,make my mistake and sell them.... oh and thanks for the good luck wishes.... TBH have had a go and seens as I havnt mixed for a few years it all came back in a second... :O)

sucka4chix - Used to like a bit of breakbeat before I got into my UK 2 step Garage.... allthough can't say i've heard of Florida breakbeat.... any online examples you know of ?

RangeHova - Gotta agree Vinyl rocks.... allthough can't say I've ever heard ANY reel to reel that TJT is talking about.... HOW the hell do ya mix that then ???

Peggygee - I have to admit you are the LAST person I would have expected to be a vinyl junkie/DJ....!! - are there any talents you DONT have ? lol - Oh and if ya ever get that radio station going... got a place for a English DJ ??? lol - luving the gifs btw.... :O)

DJ_Asia - Arrrrrrrgh ! - THATS what I love about vinyl.... all the pops n hisses... mmmm mmmm - What do you use to mix at present ? Im thinking of getting some CD decks aswell simply because they are much cheaper to buy than vinyl.... I have to admit aesthetically i'm in love with the technics.... but have heard there not that good... any recommendations?

TJT - you said ''BTW,isn't most club DJ'ing automated these days? When I go to a club I wonder why they're paying some of these guys? A couple of laptops and guy w/some personality on the mic? I remember when it was an art and hard work. I hope it still is on the top end.''

It most definately is still an art for the big boyz...cant say ive ever heard Paul Oakenfold or John Digweed on the mike between tunes!! allthough i'd laff my cute lil ass off if i did ! lol

Irisheyes - not quite my taste in muzic.. but im sure it rocks.... As for the mixer... thanks for the advice.... I will be buying one VERY soon.. allthough the one I got with it is fine for beat matching at present... in fact was quite surprised once i got used to it...!

THANKS for the links everyone :O)

Reel to reels club style? LOL. It would be a royal pain in the ass. I've seen it done but it the reels were used for the basic sets w/ vinyl used for requests and as a back up. The prep work, mixing and splicing the base tapes would take a good day or more?

You could try it live with say 3-4 decks and couple of assistants to switch tapes and cue 'em up but it would be the proverbial clusterfuck. I'd pay to see someone try it though. ;)

I dont spin any longer,im too busy shooting pix for that, besides 25 years as a DJ was enuff for me.
I learned on Technics 1200's and segued to CD mixers...honestly I found CD's to be harder to mix with than vinyl, but the convenience of CD from the ability to transport them to the ability to rip and burn a hot new track was too much to ignore.

Technics not good???..Ive never used anything better, and used many that were alot worse...your choice was fine!

Jens a Dj.................could you be any hotter !!!!

Yeah I'm Dj too, I play all over the north west of England.

Funky House & Trance is orginally what got me into mixing but endless weekends spent at nation off my tits was the final nail in the coffin.

These days I basically play everything, I love cutting up my varied taste in music, dropping hiphop into rock, then into techno, then some electro into a funky classic, then kicking in a dirty french houser and finally finishing off the crowd with a complete head fucker ! (I'm massively into Barry White as a set finisher at the moment).

Djing isn't just about mixing one record into another, any fool can do that, its about creating a vibe & a party, making sure your tunes create a lesson & a journey for the audience; they then go away & talk about your set for years because that vibe still carries with them. (Romantic idea I know but its a goal to work towards).

In a majority of self respecting venues the industry standard mixer is the Pioneer DJM 500 (or its newer model), new its around 500 notes but there is a far cheaper model available that has all the same functions. Check out the Behringer DJX 700: http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR101008

On a previous post I said I'd love to attend one of your party nights but work gets in the way............as you may of guest Djs are busy every Friday & Saturday, I hope that drink is still on Ice

P.s. You've got yourself a bargain there hun, just need some Ortofon concorde's now: http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR25004

Berhinger makes some good affordable stuff. My EQ is a Behringer. Has a built-in peak limiter, noise gate, and filters among other things. I want to say the model number is EQ-1026? (I'm too lazy to get off my ass to walk downstairs to the studio.)

A friend uses one of their compressor/limiter combos at a lil' one lung AM station he owns. It produces some sweet on-air audio and was ridiculously cheap, maybe 125 bucks? Nice stuff and well built.

Where do you play.... You said 'all over' the northwest of England.. sounds like you have been pretty successfull... ! Maybe i'll come and hear a set one day :O)

I totally know what you mean about creating a vibe.... a journey to take the crowd on and lift them up...... thats what I am aiming to do.. I cant say I enjoy a DJ who just mixes the end of one track into another and doesnt try to do something exciting or fresh...

Thanks for the advice RE:Pioneer DJM 500.. The one I have will have to do for a few weeks.... but will defintely check it and the Behringer DJX 700 out..

Can you tell me... why do you prefer and what is the advantage of the ortofon carts.... ? I have 2 x Stanton 500AL.

Thanks for the link :O) some great tunes on there...

I went to Camden in London yesterday and bought about 50 records to get me started... Mainly Hed Kandi/Subliminal/Azuli/Defected type of vibe.... I like my 'vocal, feel good, hands in the air, dance around your handbag' house...lol.... allthough I did also get about 10 new breaks releases... great fun to mix.. !

I'm successful in my own way

I work for an agency, I don't have an actual "residency". I get last minute calls to cover venues or private parties who are short of DJ. One night I could be doing a private party in Cheshire the next night I could be in Liverpool doing a bar or a club.

Ortofon Concordes are durable thats why they're the best in my opinion, plus they look wicked !
