Sorry, I don't have an update, I'm asking for one. If this was a hate crime of any kind it really needs to be publicized. There are gay and trans-friendly blogs who would like to write about it.

It really bothers me that Miriam's attack is not being publicized, because I used to have a transsexual friend named Gabrielle Picket. Gabrielle's twin sister, also a transsexual, Chanel Pickett, was murdered in Boston by someone who picked her up in a bar, presumably while Chanel was escorting.

The killer was tried and ACQUITTED of murder because of the transsexual panick defense -- that is, his lawyer convinved the jury that a man who discovers his date is a transsexual rather than a GG, is justified in flying into a violent rage, even though he had dated other transsexual escorts and frequented a transsexual bar. He was convicted of assault instead.

Gabrielle was a charming, intelligent but very depressed person when I knew her. I lost touch with her, but Megabody informed me on these boards that she eventually died of a drug overdose.

that is a truely sad story to hear.

unfortunately the guys around here may not be so supportive as many chimed in the "hate crime veto" was right and that there shouldnt be any "special" laws protecting trans-women

I was suprised by that, as well. But what I found even more surprising, and interesting, is that quite afew of the guys are not really regular posters on the forum. It's like they had a vested interest in it. Conspiracy? Duh-duh-duh!

As far as Miriam, I've heard so many conflicting stories, I have no idea exactly what happened. The only constant in the things I've heard, and this may even be wrong, is that drugs were involved somehow. :shrug

But if it was a man or woman, the defense never would have been able to use the argument it did.

yeah... like they had been here since 2005 and only had 6 posts... but yet felt compelled to come forth just to bash a bill that would help protect transexuals and prevent the above case from being repeated.... :(

I wasn't one of those guys,i think some laws could have the ability of preventing crimes from happening you have pyscopaths that purposely go out looking to start trouble with gay people,trans-women or men and end up killing them.

If you do not mind discussing this case further with me, please send me a message.

It is truly awful that different standards seems to apply to different people and genders. Hopefully in time this will change.

If drugs were involved with the attack on Mariam, as far as I am concerned, that is an irrelevant issue. It does not justify what happened, any way you look at it.

i dont think anyone was implying that it changed the situation if drugs were involved as much as it was setting the scene for a problem

Exactly.

As a recovering drug addict (5 years! yay!), I often look back and wonder how the hell I made it out of some really bad situations alive.

Subject:

Support the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

I'm writing to ask you to vote for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act this month. As your constituent, and as a citizen, I believe law enforcement officials need additional support from the federal government to help fight bias-motivated violence.

As Americans, we must take a strong stand against violence committed against our neighbors for simply being themselves. The purpose of our government, first and foremost, is to protect all of our citizens - whether they are black, disabled, Christian transgendered, or gay.

This Act would also provide much-needed resources for local law enforcement agencies, so they can investigate and prosecute hate crimes. Opponents of the federal bill wrongly characterize its scope and purpose - this legislation is not about enhancing penalties for these types of crimes, nor does it punish thoughts or speech. The bill simply is about providing resources to law enforcement to help investigate, apprehend and prosecute vicious criminals.

This legislation has long been supported by 31 state Attorneys-General, former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, the National District Attorneys Association, the National Sheriffs Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Forum and many other law enforcement organizations.

Please vote for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
[Your address]

I know from dealing with Section 8 in PA that just throwing money at a problem wont help it go away. Thats not the answer...There are already enough laws on the books that if they were enforced even handidly would work just as well.

Dems answer to everything is just to make more and more complicated laws.

I wouldnt support this bill as written on that basis.

i recieved a rather lucid phone call from her when i was in la-

she wishes not to be discussed and that her thread (which was removed a long time ago) be removed.

she is doing fine from what she said- but that is all the news i have.
