Hoboken and Jersey City sound like the move for you. Hoboken is very trendy and has a very vibrant night-life for twenty-somethings. It's actually on the expensive side now.

The Paulus Hook area of JC is also very nice. The Heights section is like a little Brooklyn. Much cheaper than trying to live in Manhattan and both are a PATH train ride away from lower Manhattan.

You can probably end up in most places in Manhattan faster than people that live in the outer bouroughs. I'd also say consider Union City or Weehawken, but those two always strike me as a little weird.

I'm driving up tomorrow and looking for an apartment in northern NJ. Want to be as close to NYC as possible but in a relativly safe area. Not sure the best areas that I should be looking at. Also not sure if I'm just moving in myself or if I'm going to have a roommate. Meeting up with someone I've known for a while but just recently started chatting with to see if we get along. Seems like it'll be good though. Looking for anywhere from a 1 bedroom to 3 bedroom with rent being up to $1600/month (maybe higher, not sure yet). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not look in some safe places in NYC if you are willing to pay that much??? Like Astoria in Queens, Greenpoint in Brooklyn, or Throgs Neck in the Bronx? You could get a really nice place in those areas for that kind of money and still be in NYC. Even Manhattan has some decent areas for that kind of cash.

I just personally HATE New Jersey and the hassel of getting back and forth from NYC, plus the cost of cummuting.

And, if you are considering escorting at all.............you will do fine with that (you are gorgeous) and will easily make the rent ;)

WHatever you choose I hope it is a wonderful move and that all goes well with it.

Speaking as someone who lived in Jersey for years, my advice is not to live there. IMO, most of it is an overpriced shithole. For the money you are looking to spend, you can find a place in NYC's boroughs, etc.

Of course, how close is close to NYC. I feel that I live quite close to NYC for my purposes and I'm 100 miles away in Delawhere. :D I understand that you don't want quite that much of a buffer.

I've been out to visit with friends as far out as Sparta and Dover and as close in as Jersey City (Near PATH stations). Depending on how 'local' you wish to be to the city, NJTransit can reach some pretty nice, and not unreasonable areas of the state.

Just got back from CT after driving all around New Haven, Hartford, Windsor, Milford, etc. Some nice digs up there.

Use to live in Princeton, NJ and Hoboken does sound like your best bet.

Hoboken looks like a fun place to live...I used to play a club called Maxwell's and go look at the city across the river. But my ex lives in Astoria and is happy.

I just arrived in the northeast, meeting with my potential roommate this week and looking for a place. It seems like it will either be Hoboken or Jersey City for now. Thank you for the advice.

Have you looked into Queens? Your commute and access to the city and the people in it would be that much easier. It's a huge borough and the rents are comparable.

Hopefully, you can stay until friday/saturday to check out Washington Av. in Hoboken to see what I'm talking about.

I think you'll like it.

I wanted to consider moving actually into NYC but if I'm going to have this roommate they are set on northern NJ and I'll just be happy a) to have a roommate that I'll hopefully get along with (nothing indicates we won't so far) and b) that I'll be so close to the city :) Could always move again when the lease expries and being close to the city will help me get to know it better and meet people there beforehand.

Hoboken is preferable. It has some of the old age charm and character of parts of Brooklyn, while still being a youthful and exhilerating place. Also there is a bohemian element that would be perfect for your lifestyle (whereas Jersey City is more of a str8 area and heavy on commuter).

Have fun finding a place. I looked around for a place for a while. Decided buying was better than renting, but I am by myself. Im still living in a hotel since January hehehe. NJ isnt too bad, I like it.

you should try and live in the city if you can...any borough (well almost) the further into jersey you love the less likely you are to actually spend time in the city and enjoy it which is the point of living here. i know plenty of people in jersey and they always find reasons not to leave... sad :(

Definitely check out the Newport complex in Jersey City...reasonable rents, very modern condo-type apartment buildings, super safe, and right on the Hudson river...only 5 mins from the West Village. The complex is large enough that you have anonymity if you want it, all buildings have doormen. I lived there for several years before I bought a place further away...
If you wind up there, give me a shout...always looking for a new friend...
