Me, too. I only found out this evening that, for some strange reason, our Comcast lists MSNBC as "Local Access" and ALL programs are listed as "Local Access Programming" so it's impossible to schedule a recording unless I manually set the DVR for a known time. So I missed the MSNBC show, too. I'll definitely try to catch this one!

Leora, this is good news. Sometimes when the media tries to make a minority group acceptable, they start with showing the evil effects on the children. The civil rights movement started by focusing on the effect of elementary school segregation on African American children. When most of the public was disgusted by people (mostly gay) with AIDS, the activists and media latched onto a boy (hemophiliac) with AIDS and swung the public's sympathy around.

Hopefully the mainstream media will start taking discrimination against transgendered people seriously by focusing on transgendered children, and make them acceptable.

i think the show was very good, although i do wish somebody would take Barbara Walters out back and beat her with a brick. Seems like it is tougher on the fathers than the mothers in a way, but its good that the families were doing the right thing for their kids.

I saw it. It was one of the best transexual stories I ever saw on TV. The thing that I hate about most transexual shows (such as ones on TLC) is that the FTM is usually a young Tman and the MTF is usually a 40+ year old Tgirl who looks masucline (no offense to anyone). I hate that. It gives people the wrong idea. So it's nice to see a show that shows both kinds of TS's the same way. (IE: Young MTF and young FTM)

I wish I could have started earlier as well as I definately had feelings of being female when I was 11. If I did, I wouldn't need any electrolosis or anything.

Vala,

On a side note, I leave for up north early next week (Monday or Tuesday) and begin looking for an apartment in northern NJ (with a roommate asuming all things go well) soon thereafter :)

Good luck with the move.

Here in Ohio, about 5 years ago, some parents wanted their six(?) year old boy to go to school as a girl. They stated, (it was chiefly the mother), that the child had GID. The state went to court, took custody of the child, and placed it in foster care. It was reported that the foster family refused to to let the child wear any girls clothes and tried to give the child male role models and outlets.

I don't know what happened after that because the story dropped out of the news. I can't truly judge what happened because I dont know the intimate details of the case, just media reports.

My point is that hopefully in the future there will be more understanding in cases like that in this state.

Usually such stories did not end up in the media... as of 10 years ago some parents in some states were getting *jailtime* for childabuse for letting their kids transistion (or start to transistion) at a young age... and in such cases the kid always ends up in foster care.

In general, times have changed.

As to Ohio, the bible belt state of the north- I really can't say I am surprised... we are, after all, talking about a state that gave Bush his re-election by ensuring there was a gay marriage ban on the ballot... thus mobilizing all the rightiest fundies out in the country and convincing them to come out and vote for the marriage ban (and we can all probably guess who they voted for while they were there  ). This is also a state so transphobic that birth certificates can not be changed or corrected... *ever*- so if your doctor isn't paying attention and checks the wrong box, thats whats on your birth certificate for life. The document can not be changed and there are absolutely no exceptions made, regardless the circumstance. Even in states where they define legal sex status based on bloodwork (and not genitals) this is overkill... I can't think of an other state which flat out refuses to change the documents in cases of obvious clerical error.
