In most everyday conversation, the term Envy should supplant the term Jealousy in 95% of everyday conversations. Are you listening, class ?

As I remember them from college:

Jealousy: The perception, real or imagined, that one is threatened with the loss of something one owns or holds very dear to them.
i,e, The emotion a wife might direct toward a new beautiful young secretary her significant other seems to be spending longer and longer hours with every evening. The wife in this scenario is jealous of the time this secretary seems to be spending with her husband and feels the threat -- again, real or imagined -- with the loss of that husband to this new vamp. She is jealous of the time they've been spending together. The operative thinking here should be,faced with the threat of loss. Got that ?

Envy: Envy is the emotion one feels when they see or perceive -- again, real or imagined -- an advantage that another has over them. Envy should be utilized in 95% of the cases where Jealousy has been incorrectly utilized, as seems to be the case in this thread topic, and others in HA.
i,e, One woman witnessing another woman walking into a club wearing a new unique gown she's had her eye on for a month is envious, not jealous, of that woman's new gown ... See the difference ? In most -- MOST -- everyday cases, you guys want to utilize the term ENVY or ENVIOUS, not jealousy. Jealousy, when used correctly, should, well, hardly see any use at all in everyday conversation. The operative thinking here should be, the awareness of an advantage. A gain by another. Make sense ?

Your definition of jealousy is also a little off: the mere "perception, real or imagined, that one is threatened with the loss of something one owns or holds very dear" is fear, or possibly paranoia, not jealousy, as it does not imply a rival but only a loss; jealousy is fear of being replaced by another, of losing one's position or affection to a rival (real or imagined). It's not the threat of loss in itself, but the real or imagined perception of a rival for what you possess (or think you possess).

Of course, these are just fine points of definition; your usage of each term in your examples is spot on, and that's what really counts. In general, I quite agree with you that these terms are commonly misused and that when people say someone is jealous they really mean that someone is envious.

I actually had a course in college which covered how envy and jealousy, among other emotions, play significant roles in our society and culture, historically and in current everyday life, and well, how they're not neccessarily a bad thing to have as a whole. Envy might get one to look for a better job, or maybe go back to school, et all.
