Ultimate Boot CD
# Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

# Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.

# Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!

Let's say you've 'screwed the pooch' and your computer is
'dead as disco', but if you could get in you might be able to fix it.

For Windows:

Here are a few;

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

What is BartPE and PE Builder?

There's another one that has a number of system utiliities built in that
I use, but I am not seeing the link. I will post it when I find it.

peggygee BartPE is just a plugin for Bacula (from my understanding), which itself is an open source tool for backing up data. Pretty good really.

My addon to this train of thought is FireGPG
http://firegpg.tuxfamily.org/index.php?page=install&lang=en

Its really cool cos it allows you to sign messages (hence non-repudiation) and is really secure. The code is GPL so it can been seen and modified (blah blah). It works brilliantly with Gmail and webmail. I haven't tested it work on yahoo though. The installation is terribly simple and doesn't hog too much memory either. Really cool

Another cool (and quite essential) tool to use Task bar shuffle. http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshufflev10.htm

Now this is has been soo useful I cannot even begin to think what I'd do without it. Its nifty, not processor intensive and ever so useful in managing all those processes on the task bar.

zomg. another mac user??

What machine do you have?

- Intel core duo MacBook
- 1.2GB RAM
- 2GHz processor
- 110GB hard drive w/
- 35GB OS X partition (with parallels running XP)
- 50GB Mac OS data partition
- 25GB XP partition (accessed via BootCamp)

XP installations run MacDrive so they can see the data partition as they should (coz windoze needs all the help it can get). I only run XP because sometimes I need to use software/hardware that's only engineered for windoze. My other laptop (an old Dell Latitude) runs Ubuntu very nicely indeed, although I *may* consider changing over to the Mac OS for Intel PCs when it supports older hardware.

The MacBook is also connected to a 26" Samsung LCD HDTV/monitor dual screen setup.

So then, what r u using?

So then, what r u using?

The last Powermac G4 ever built, the first one incapable of booting into OS9.

Dual 1.42ghz G4 processors
2GB ram
120GB HDD with 6.5GB remaining >_< need a sata card and some 500gb drives.
128mb GeForce 4600Ti (thinking about replacing this soon)

and a 22" flat-panel CRT that weighs 11,000lbs.

I also occasionally use a 25mhz powerbook 520 for chatting on aim. :)
I have about a dozen macs in my house. Most of them are vintage.
Also 3 or 4 PCs. One with Ubuntu.

I wish I could afford a new Mac Pro.

I think I love you... ;-) Ubuntu is a great OS; and ubuntu (in the African sense) is a very loving and harmonious way to live.

Before I bought the MacBook I had an 8600; I used it for internet radio :-)

Haha.. You were still using an 8600? Was that your main computer?

Before the G4 I used a Dell XPS 450. That's the one that now has Ubuntu. I swapped the 450mhz p3 for a 1.3ghz celeron recently. :)

I paid $4500 for my first Mac on a whim, and I had never even used one before. I'm glad I took the risk. ^_^

Haha.. You were still using an 8600? Was that your main computer?

Nup!. I had a G4 at work and a Linux network @ home with the 8600 connected.

Before the G4 I used a Dell XPS 450. That's the one that now has Ubuntu. I swapped the 450mhz p3 for a 1.3ghz celeron recently. :)

I bet it runs without any trouble.

I paid $4500 for my first Mac on a whim, and I had never even used one before. I'm glad I took the risk. ^_^[quote]

I paid the same for my first windoze PC and I have regretted it ever since.

For all your DVD ripping/burning/backup needs

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/RipIt4Me.shtml

http://www.imgburn.com/

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

For those of you unfamiliar witht he process Ripit4me will walk you thru the use of Dvd Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Occasionally you might need to use IMGBURN instead of DVD Decrypter as they dont update the decrypter anymore.

Alternately DVD FAB offers a free trial which will do it all in one for you. It only lasts a month. I purchased DVD FAB which is a great deal as it lasts for life, its not a yearly subscription and is updated alot. Occasionally DVDFAB doesnt like some DVDs, usually burns of original movies. Ripit4me etc will usually take care of that for me.

If youre wanting to rip HD movies, decrypter/shrink will not work, as the file will still be too large to burn to disc.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Housecall; online anti-malware scan. this is the ONE reason I still keep IE hidden on my PC. Firefox doesn't run it OK, cause Java is waging war on them or something. this is a very handy and safe way to clear out your PC once in a while and it sure beats having big ff-in anti-virus progs slowing the PC down.

I don't like crap like Norton , McAfee and the like. it's heavy, itr screws up the regisatry very very bad, it's slowing down everything......installing stuff like this is like running around with a condom on your dick ALL DAY AND NIGHT cause maybe, once in a while, you might have sex!

no anti-virus progs screwing up here, uh uh. with spybot, adaware and the occasional housecall I keep it going OK. the fact that I've hidden myself behind a big whoppin' router (Draytek Vigor) might help a wee bit too

Firefox Add-On:Save Images

Save Images saves the images from the current tab page, from the cache, to a specified location, with either the images original file name or a file name that you specify. The size, dimensions and types of images saved may be chosen, with options if the file size is unknown or if duplicate files are found. Images may be either saved from the current tab, left or right of the current tab or from all tabs. Also, all or selected links or image links in the current page can be opened in a new tab or multiple tabs. There are shortcut keys for some of the menu options.rnrnSave Images can be accessed from either the Firefox Tools menu, the context menu (right click in page) or from a button placed on a toolbar (recommended - requires placement by user). Clicking the button will save the images using the Option "Default Save Action". Click the arrow next to the button to display a menu for more options

This is one of the best threads around here. :twisted:Thanks for the appreciation.

Hereīs another one

concrete5

concrete5 is a content management system, built in PHP, that makes it easy for anyone to run a website. It will save the planet.

It's super friendly. You edit as you go like Google Pages, but anyone can build out a whole site that does cool stuff by just pointing and clicking. If you can write on a computer you can update your website with c5. It's intuitive: just point, click, and edit in place. By making it so easy to use, people feel comfortable experimenting with their site. That's freedom of expression and we like that a lot.

It's powerful for developers. It can be easily extended in any number of ways. It wasn't some news or blogging application we just called a CMS and released quickly. It is a toolbox we spent 5 years working on as a commercial solution to our own problems as web developers, before giving it away in 2008. You can build any type of website you want out of c5 without compromise.

It's dependable & stable. It has been around, runs on a LAMP stack and it handles sites with hundreds of thousands of visitors with no problem. Its block-permission-template structure actually works very well. It's not written in some language that doesn't scale, it's OOP, uses a database abstraction layer, all the stuff a developer would expect.

Most of this software isn't actually free. Technically anyone with an internet connection can steal any software they want, so in a sense it's "free".
When we talk about free software we mean free in the sense of free-speech, not in the sense of free beer. Free software is software that respects your freedom and privacy.
If you'd like to learn more about free software visit the free software foundation at:
