I think Brenda will get this...not sure who else will. But in case you're wondering, it's 3.14!

Also, Happy Einstein's Birthday!

On Oregon public radio yesterday, they said there was going to be a competition to see who can recite the most numbers that make up PI. Guess what the record is?
Over 40,000 numbers! Blows my mind what can be accomplished.

There are many great ones from him, but this has to be my favorite Einstein quote:

"Every day I remind myself that my inner and outer
life are based on the labors of other men, living and
dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in
the same measure as I have received and am still
receiving."

I know it out to 50 digits. I had a couple of really boring professors back in college and it was more interesting memorizing Pi than listening to them. I mean they were really boring.

Here is a more accurate value: http://www.exploratorium.edu/pi/Pi10-6.html

It is common belief among mathematicians that ANY sequence of digits eventually appears among the decimals of pi. This has not been proved yet.
If you want to find your birthdate (or any number you like) among the first 200,000,000 decimals, go to :

Have you ever seen Arronofsky's Pi?

Amazing film.

Nope, and in fact never heard of it. Care to shed some light on it? I'm always into interesting movies.

Yeah, not in a long time.

I recall it as a somewhat strange indy movie, about a troubled
mathematician, obsessed with Pi, and numbers in general.

I have it somewhere in my house, I may scrounge it up, and watch it.

Love indy stuff.

Here's a couple plot summaries I found since I'm absolutely horrible at it.

Max is a genius mathematician who's built a supercomputer at home that provides something that can be understood as a key for understanding all existence. Representatives both from a Hasidic cabalistic sect and high-powered Wall Street firm hear of that secret and attempt to seduce him.

The mathematician Maximillian Cohen (Sean Gullette) is tormented by a severe migraine since he was a kid, and he uses many pills to reduce his painful headaches. He is a lonely man, and his only friend is his former professor Sol Robeson (Mark Margolis). Max has the following assumptions, which rules his life: (1) Mathematics is the language of nature; (2) Everything around us can be represented and understood from numbers; (3) If you graph the numbers in any systems, patterns emerge. Therefore there are patterns everywhere in nature. Based on these principles, Max is trying to figure out a system to predict the behavior of the stock market. Due to his research, Max is chased by a Wall Street company with obvious interest in the results of his studies, and by an orthodox Jew follower of the Torah, who believes that this long string of numbers is a code sent from God.

3.14 aka. 22/7

22/7 is a close enough estimate of pi for most people. Some Europeans celebrate PI approximation day on the 22nd July (outside the US dates are written usually in a DD/MM format rather than MM/DD).

Sounds fascinating! I'll definitely look it up. Thanks!

On a slightly more lowbrow note, yesterday (3/14) was also Men's Valentines Day also known as "Steak and a Blowjob Day".
