I've got a Dell server with $1300 worth of speakers in my bedroom studio...and a Mac ten feet away with no speakers with all my media on it. I don't want to connect the studio computer to the net, or move the speakers to the Mac, so I need a kickass set of speakers. Anyone found a set they really like, with enough watts to play amplified instruments next to and have it sound good?
All these little satellites with subwoofers look kinda piddly.

this is an old post but just buy a stereo receiver and hook up both systems to it. it's painfully easy you just need a crossover cable to go from soundcard to stereo.

I have a set of logitechs X-230 2.1 speakers, I find their great for mp3s and movies. If you're an audiophile they definitely won't live up to your standards. Then you may wan to hook up a nice stereo receiver.
A really nice set of computer speakers is Kipsch 2.1 set. Holy moly they are loud.

Are computer speakers "plug and play"? I'm way overdue for some, but I generally don't like setting up software for anything. What are some decent ones and what are their cost approximately?

these ones had no software, you just plug them into your computer headphone socket and into
the wall. that's it.

I have had decent luck in the past with the Altec Lansing brand- I dunno what they offer now but at the time I got my latest set they had decent, basic stereo speakers (aka not surround sound).
