NEW YORK - Captain America has undertaken his last mission — at least for now. The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the Daily News reported.

On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse, according to the newspaper.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941 to incarnate patriotic feeling during World War II. Over the years, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.

But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment editor in chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.

Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

According to the comic, the superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.

In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel has said it is developing a Captain America movie.

I never thought this would happen. I don't know if I want to see a Captain America movie either. The first one was bad enough.

OMG WTF MAN. I LOVE CAPTAIN AMERICA. Him and Ironman were 2 of my favs. Plus he just starred in the Avengers cartoons just half a year ago. But hey....comic books tend to follow a different path than the cartoons. Like wolverine no longer having adamantium and marrying storm. THey ressurected superman 1 billion times....they better bring captain back.

Actually, no one died in that case. But I did hear he went for a drive with Ted Kennedy.

Boy are you out of the comic book loop. There hasn't been an Avengers cartoon since the 90's. Wolverine got his adamantium back years ago and Storm is married to Black Panther and is now the Queen of Wakanda. And Superman has only been killed once and obviously resurrected once. Now Jean Grey has been killed and resurrected at least 10 times now. Check out the comic book thread for our discussion about Cap and what's going on with him.

meh the punisher is prolly gonna fill in for Steve (as seen in the last couple pgs in Civil war) then maybe Bucky gonna feel like he needs to take over then itll be him and Omega Flight isnt as good as it was made out or something they'll put in U.S. Agent ...and prolly Rick Jones he's been everyone. And at the end of World War Hulk or something between Steve Rogers will emerge alive and well

Did Bush and Cheney kill Captain America?

So they killed Captain America. On paper he was offed by a sniper's bullet. But in reality it was the toxic state of Bush and Cheney's America. It's hard to be a star-spangled Super Soldier these days. Given the lip-service-only support this administration gives our troops, the patriotic hero would have to fight evil with a substandard red, white, and blue shield, and be stop-lossed into an endless tour of duty.

The only upside to the good Captain's death? If he had survived his wounds, he might have been sent to Walter Reed.

The way I read was that there was a cartoon series on tv. And I know about the 3 animated movies. I have them. I'm looking forward to the Dr. Strange one in August. The preview on the Iron Man dvd has me convinced that it looks good. I hope they do UA3 too.

Not to be rude or anything, but what could be nerdier than taking a strong stance on whether Star Trek or comics are nerdier?

That said, I haven't read comics since junior high (not out of self-consciousness, but because they're really expensive for something so badly written). But I still did a double-take when I saw a national news headline that read "Captain America Dead." He was a favorite of mine back then, mainly because the character did things like what 'got him killed.' Namely, taking a stand against America when jingoism and nationalism trumped democratic ideals. Given the current political landscape, and the general improbability of a guy who dresses up like the flag being a conscientious objector, I thought it was a fitting tribute, if bittersweet.

But it's all about the marketing, isn't it? In the article I read, there was word of a Captain America movie in the works. And if it's on par with the Spider-Man movies, I'll definitely be with Cap.

Five bonus points to Felicia Katt for having a snappy rejoinder to that moldy Republican fallback of "Chappaquidick!"

Do you have anything for those times when someone says in a Southern accent "I did not have sex with that woman"? Man, that's annoying when you're talking national health policy!

Fehh, it's all been done before--and I don't mean Superman in 1993, I mean Cap himself in '45. Seems he "died" but really got frozen in an iceberg and was liberated by the Sub-Mariner in a rage in 1963 (Avengers #4, I used to own an original copy along with the rest of my collection which would now pay for my house and my master's degree, lol). So he's already been brought back to life once, why not again?

I don't have one, but I just heard Roseann Barr do one on Real Time with Bill Maher. She said the reasons Republican were upset about Monica is because she was an adult female. :) Turn the page

To ecstatic:

Strange that I still find myself coming to the defense of Captain America after a fifteen year hiatus, but I still remember friends accusing him of being totally L-7 and a goody two-shoes (to use a couple of expressions older than I am). And like I said, it's all about the marketing-- of course he'll be back, but I admire the way they sent him out in the meantime. And I always thought that having been 'frozen' for decades was part of his appeal. "Decades removed from his own life, he carved his own path in a different world and made a difference." You couldn't ask for a more basic wish-fulfillment story than that, right?

Still, you're wowing me with your comedic stylings. Care to mention any influences? I'd hate to think that it's just due to inherent cattiness...

True that. Part of the problem with Cap (or Nick Fury or, to a lesser degree, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm to name but a few) is that, in the early 1960s it was logical to connect them to WWII, both to reaffirm the superhero matrix (after all, with the exception of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, superheroes pretty much died out in the late 40s/early-to-mid 50s--largely thanks to the Comics Code Authority--returning with the Silver Age in the late 50s (Flash, GL, Atom, etc.) at DC and early 60s (FF, Spidey, Avengers) at Marvel) and to establish logical personal histories for the heroes. Thus, while Cap was a man out of his time, he was only removed by less than 20 years. But now it's been 45 years since his revival, and that connection is wearing a bit thin. It's all the nature of time in comics, ever the ultimate damp blanket as it were.
