I think part of the reason many of us are enamoured by muscle cars of that era from the Big Three, were the 60s and early '70s colors associated with them. They go hand in hand and are reflective of the times. A timeless metallic grey can be had anytime, but that purple, or any other wild color from that era is part of their legacy. ...Changing its color would be akin to placing a Dodger's cap on Whistler's Mother.

Actually, the '58 Edsel was the nicest styling of the three years. I came very close to buying a '60 some years back, just because. :) The Lincoln dealership had taken it on a trade-in to have as a conversation piece on the lot. It got lots of conversation, but little interest otherwise and they kept reducing the price until they finally foisted it off at the Manheim auction. Apparently, even Edsel fans hated the '60.

My choice would be the '37 Packard limousine, like the one pictured here. There is a sweet, black one in the building behind it (The Anderson Auto Museum) that I used to play with back in the late '70s when I had my service. Damn, I miss that car. Stylish, classy, and uber-comfortable and roomy (You could almost stand up inside the rear compartment).

Would Peabody's Wayback Machine be considered a vehicle? It is a portal to take one to another realm, right ?

If not, I'll choose to be a 1970 Cougar Eliminator. It's a classic that is relatively small, classy and luxurious, and powerful as all get out if equipt with the right potent engine (a 428 Cobra Jet for me).

Actually, I always thought that people were enamoured with then for two reasons...

1) the body styles were just awesome. None of this bubbly shit you see now-a-days. Clean, sporty, lines. The cars just looked bad-ass.

2) they actually sounded like they performed. For me, nothing sounds fast and nasty like that deep, rumbling, throaty V-8 growl.
Sure, now-a-days you can drag 200hp from a rinky-dink 4-cylinder just by messing around with the programming, but despite it's speed, it still sounds like a weed whacker.

The colors were original and cool, that's for certain, but frankly the paint job is pretty much the easiest thing to change on a car.

But I do agree, changing the purple paint job on that monster would be a crime. That's one cool purple.

New Body Style GT Mustang,

Not the Cobra, Not the V-6, just the V-8 4.6L.

New Young Body Style...... Fast but not High High End. Not High Maintenance, just a fun, reasonably fast machine, thats pretty lean.

Thats the car I'd be.

Well put on the observations, and don't forget that one could order a car -- any model just about -- a la carte back then. I think the Mustang had like six or seven engine choices one year, and I'm positive the same could be had by the GM and Mopar buyers. Today's Mustang (only available in one body style mind you) GT has what, two? That is, one could load them up with options (engine choices, tranny choices, and rear end choices) until the cows came home. Today, those over-stressed four and six bangers that sound like hairdryers don't offer those kind of options or choices.
