Precisely...

But I'm distressed at the answers here. A "musician" is a person....Not a band. And Bob Dylan is not a good "musician" he is a great songwriter and performer and cultural icon. But "musician?" I don't know. The whole idea of his music was anti-music.

A "musician," by my definition, is somone who plays a "musical" instrument--if that's not the definition in this thread, then disregard what I've said (but what's the point of using a key word in a thread if there is no consensus on the definition of that word).

So "musicians?" For me: Bunny Berigan, Sidney Bechet, Nat King Cole, Jimi Hendrix, Luigi Pagannini, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Cannoball Adderly, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Buddy Rich...... are only some of my favorites...and people that actually played their respective instruments with virtuosity.

Can't say I have a favorite, though Gil Scott Heron, used to speak

I have eclectic taste, and like just about anything 'good'. Good being

Few rock, folk or pop musicians play at the same level as the great jazzers or classical artists, though I actually listen to more rock and folk than I do jazz or classical. Here's a few of my faves:

Jazz musicians: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, McCoy Tyner, Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, Erol Garner, Patricia Barber, Thelonius Monk, Sun Ra, Keith Jarrett, Jorane, Jimi Hendrix (he had sessions planned with Kirk, Miles, and Gil Evans when he died)

Singer-songwriters: Donovan, Bob Dylan, Robin Williamson, Shawn Phillips, Chris Smither, Paul McCartney, Buffy Sainte-Marie

Bands: Beatles, pre-Nicks Fleetwood Mac (though I like Stevie on her own), Rolling Stones (Brian Jones era), Incredible String Band, Moody Blues, Grateful Dead, 60's era Jefferson Airplane (I'm a 60's classic rock dude, lol)

If I was locked up in an institution and forced to listen to one person's music for the rest of my life, my only wish would be Eno sans discreet music.

My favorite musician by far is Miles Davis, because he was a pioneer, never standing still.
He constantly listened to other styles of music and changed his own approach. I have close to 50 of his albums on vinyl. I am a keyboard player, and my favorite living player is Herbie Hancock. He played with Miles and covers several styles, himself.

Favorite band of all time; Earth Wind & Fire.

Besides Jazz, I love all styles of music, but get bored if everything sounds the same. Current Drum & Bass is my favorite style. I also like Brazilian, Indian, middle Eastern styles.

By the way, singers are musicians too, even though many of them feel like they are better than musicians.

Bravo, Scorpion. It started with Yngwie "Dances with six strings" Malmsteen from Sweden who was mainly influenced with Paganini (the violin-virtuoso), Bach and Beethoven. Malmsteen is the father of Neo-classical Metal.
