Heinz profit up more-than-expected
CHICAGO (Reuters) — Heinz (HNZ) on Thursday posted a greater-than-expected 23% rise in quarterly profit, lifted by increased prices and sales of new ketchup and soup products.
But the company also stuck by its full-year forecast, rather than raising it after the strong quarterly results.
The company, fresh from a battle with dissident investor Nelson Peltz over seats on the Heinz board, posted profit of $194.1 million, or 58 cents a share, in the fiscal first quarter ended Aug. 2, compared with $157.3 million, or 45 cents a share, a year earlier.
Analysts on average forecast 53 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Sales rose 8.4% to $2.06 billion, beating the average analyst estimate of $2.03 billion. Volume, a measure that factors out currency and price fluctuations, rose 5.1% on growth in all the company's segments, Heinz said.
