View Full Version : General Question: What's your profession?

johnie

Since we recently had a self pic post, I figured we would get to know each other better if we posted our professions. You don't have to be too specific if you don't want to. Anyway, here's mine..... I'm currently a graphic designer (boring, i know).....

What's yours?

I'm actually an artist. Freelancer, although I plan to exhibit more in the future. I'm hoping that one of my major projects brings in steady income, and I would love to do more Fine Art work.

The swatiska is actually a symbol of good luck in Asia to Buddhists and Hindus. It's a shame that Germany had to adopt the symbol. It's still commonly used to this day. The symbol was used for 3000 yrs for good luck before Nazi Germany, and can even be dated back to 1000 BC.

The piece is not my work, but it was created in Japan. I just happen to be in Japan, and I study Buddhist theory. That's why I chose to not alter the piece in photoshop. I've had this discussion on this board before, but you weren't a member at the time.

I'm a professional bum. My job is to eat my mom out of house and home, shirk my household chores in favor of playing video games, and stay out late at night. During the last fiscal year, I consumed about $3500 worth of groceries and that number will rise exponentially as I get back on my work out regimine.

Seriously though, I'm a full time college student. Once I get my next schedule nailed down, I'm gonna begin looking for a job so I can save some money and move out.

I'm a dermatologist.

It's actually a pretty good gig if you're a physician. You don't have any night calls, you can pretty much set your own hours, and a large percentage of your work is on a cash basis since it's considered "cosmetic", and therefore not covered by insurance. It also pays pretty well - a lot better than emergency medicine or general practice.

Plus, although you don't dramatically intervene to save someone's life, your work can go far to improve quality of life (I'm not talking cosmetic procedures here).

This is where you're supposed to say "Gee, which of you wants to take pictures of me and design my site?".

Hmm...Hard to say whether or not I have a 'profession', per se. I work a grunt job for the guv'mint (If you've ever gotten a letter in a little plastic 'body bag' that looks like it has teeth marks all over it, they were probably made by my teeth) in 'real' life. I also sell stuff, mostly on eBay these days. Stuff I've sold from time to time: Toys, games, comic books, paperback and hardcover books, stamps, coins, jewelry, lesbian sex magazines, coin counting equipment, railway badges, used hearses, ambulances, and limousines, ad infinitum.

In recent years I've been tapping a previously unknown talent of mine that essentialy boils down to small business management consulting. My best work has been for savants that know their product/profession in unbelievable detail but who can't stay focused on simple operational tasks. I'm pretty much the opposite, unable to remain focused on the big picture but thriving in the oganizational minutae. I keep their engines running and gears greased while they do the driving that they know best.

I've done such work mostly with small businesses (Proprietorships, etc.), but have also advised a couple of major postal authorities, some small press publishers, and came very close to brokering a deal to manage my own railroad one year. :)

I'm a nightclub tech, although I'm not overly enthused about the job. I do have numerous schemes and plans laid out and do not expect to be employed where I am for the long term.

If things don't eventually work out for me, there is also the remote possibility that I may find employment as a pool boy and dog walker in Costa Rica.

:P

I'm a resident at a public hospital in a crime ridden part of the city. And i think as long as the crazy radical Christians are in charge (they are only a percentage of peace loving christians of course), it'll remain crime ridden and we'll have plenty of customers. Less police funding in the cities means more gsw's for us and more money for war-based contractors. Thankfully, ill have job security forever, whether the crazy chickenhawks keep spreading their ideology of love (through war) or not.

Ain't that the truth, especially about the nationalist hawk Christians vs. the peace-loving ones. Sigh.

Until recently, I worked running a small hedge fund (with my then partners) and a real estate investment co. (also, with partners). Now, I’m completely disengaged from the first venture and have removed myself from actively managing the second. I’ve spent most of the last month and a half traveling to give retirement a try.

Here’s an insight I’ve gained about retiring young: EARLY RETIREMENT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After traveling some more, I’ll return to financial speculation – for myself only – and running the real estate investment co. Though I might give some form of semi-retirement a try, full retirement will clearly never work for me because I need the thrill of competition. Yes, I clearly have issues.
