Based on my experience, the above is definitely true; there are lots of trans women who have never escorted, done porn, or only do either for a while and then move on to "normal" work.

However, while I disagree with the OP that "most" --i.e., more than half--of trans women are escorts or work in porn, the percentage of the overall population of trans women who do or have is quite high. The sociological studies I've seen cite numbers as high as 40%, which significantly greater than among cis women.

Of course, each person's reasons for doing anything are unique, but there do seem to be themes. Lack of educational and job opportunities; the need/desire to pay for transition; the amount of money that can be made, compared to wages for unskilled jobs; to gain a sense of validation about femininity or attractiveness; out of a need to pay for basic necessities like food and rent; and, sadly, sometime to feed a drug addiction.

I think it depends where you live. When I lived in San Francisco, there were many trans women who had regular jobs and lives and did not do porn or escort. I live in the midwest now, and on rare occasions, I'll see a trans woman who has a regular job. I went to a bar once that had a transgendered bartender. This was a small neighborhood bar, and she enjoyed flashing her tits at the customers. Even though this was a straight bar, and many people figured she was trans, because of her voice, nobody really cared. I also recently saw a young trans girl working at a Taco Bell. Sometimes, though, you can't always tell so easily. Occasionally I will see a trans woman advertising on Doublelist.
