The choice may come down to either Fernando Haddad and Bolsonaro if the latter makes it through to the 2nd round. Either way, the choice is, in essence more of the same, as the FT comments. It means that the politicians with their grubby hands in the till will carry on lining their pockets with the people's cash while making pious statements about law and order and economic growth. As the LSE analysis argues, voter turnout may be decisive, as the general public lack trust in their country's politicians.

In the case of Bolsonaro, the choice is simple: if you believe in freedom and respect for all, he is a non-starter let alone a winner. Here is a stark reminded of the situation face by the LGBTQPIA"2"N/B -

the Grupo Gay da Bahia (GGB)—the oldest LBGTQ+ rights organization in Brazil—found that there were 445 deaths[1] (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/lgbtq-rights-brazil-could-the-elections-impact-challenging-landscape#_ftn1) in the last year due to sexual or gender orientation: the largest number in thirty-eight years, and representing a 30 percent increase from 2016. Among the LGBTQ+ population, transgender people are at the most risk. Transgender Brazilians are at twelve times the risk of being killed compared to transgender Americans. Moreover, most perpetrators go unpunished. LGBTQ+ discrimination is not legally identified as a hate crime—unlike racism—and femicide laws do not include transgender women. As a result, even in cases where individuals are tried and found guilty, the sentences tend to be lighter than comparable cases involving other underprivileged and/or minority groups.

As for Bolsonaro's position-
The outsider candidate has openly opposed gender and sexuality education programs, and is vehemently against same-sex marriage. Bolsonaro criticized the 2013 judiciary decision that allowed LGBTQ+ marriage, referring to the 1988 Constitution’s heteronormative definition (https://www.jusbrasil.com.br/topicos/10645133/artigo-226-da-constituicao-federal-de-1988) of marriage and claiming (https://noticias.terra.com.br/brasil/politica/bolsonaro-sobre-casamento-gay-nao-querem-igualdade-e-sim-privilegios,99ff52d635aae310VgnVCM4000009bcceb0aRC RD.html) the LGBTQ+ community is not looking for equality, but for special privileges. His political career has been packed with contentious statements on the subject. In Viceland’s documentary Gaycation (https://www.viceland.com/en_us/video/brazil/56a90e3f59b6e07a13d27d01), he argued homosexuality is a behavioral issue that has increased due to liberal measures such as drug use and women joining the workforce. He has claimed it is possible to “beat the gay out of your child (https://www.pragmatismopolitico.com.br/2014/03/ter-filho-gay-e-falta-de-porrada-diz-bolsonaro.html),” and was fined R$150,000 after publically saying (https://www.revistaforum.com.br/bolsonaro-e-condenado-e-tera-que-pagar-r150-mil-fundo-de-defesa-lgbt/) he does not have a gay son because his children were well educated.

I thought this was another Nikka joke thread, once again, the joke is on me. I saw some articles in the paper about this, but it didn't get much airplay here. What with the Rick Grimes situation, and all......
