I see transgender athletes (specifically MTF) as a growing hotbed of debate.

But is this about Gender, or the use of chemicals which in sport some claim may give a competitor an advantage? It does not just apply to those intersexed or transgendered sports-persons who want to participate in competitive games (the Boston Marathon can be run by anyone outside the speed merchants), but to everyone in professional sport that, on their own, through their trainers or through their governments, have cheated by taking chemicals to improve their performance. This has been going at least since the USSR doped its athletes, if not before; the use of chemicals has been rife in the Tour de France for decades as well as other sports, so the real question is why do people attach any importance to major sporting events where individual performance has probably been determined by drug use?

Then this:
A leading scientist at international athletics’ governing body has said he is in favour of a third category for intersex athletes and that it could happen within five years – although he admitted public opinion will have to shift first.

What happens to women's basketball when it's dominated by 6ft 4 transgender women?

Interesting....
Since Thailand acknowledges a 3rd gender, it would be interesting to hear it's sports perspective .....

Not a lot, unless that transgendered Basketball player starts taking testosterone to get back some of the masculine muscle power she lost when she became a woman -and why would she do that? It might not be true of all post-ops, but for Savannah Burton it has been:
"My mechanics of playing didn't change," she says of her agility and coordination. "But my muscle strength decreased significantly. I can't throw as hard."

The new rules appear to have been motivated in particular by Caster Semenya, a South African who has been dominating women's middle-distance running but has faced ongoing controversy about her gender status. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caster_Semenya#2018_testosterone_rule_change

This article has a pretty good discussion of the changes. http://www.newnownext.com/the-olympics-are-about-to-make-it-a-lot-harder-for-transgender-athletes-to-compete/04/2018/

Joe Rogan has talked extensively about this issue in general and particularly in relation to MMA. You can check out his podcasts.

Not a lot,
My lesbian friends that I talked with over this were concerned with being squeezed out over height advantage - not testosterone/hormones..

I don't know much about Basketball so thanks for informing me that the key advantage one Basketball player has over another is their height.

I don't think your friends have anything to worry about, absolutely nothing will happen. Think about how many transgendered women there are ages 18-22. Then break down that number further by how many can play college basketball at the FCS aka division 1 level. There's not going to be enough to cause an impact, let alone dominate.

They'd get walloped. WNBA uses a smaller basketball and shorter three point line yet the same height net. In that time there's been a handful of dunks where as in the NBA there are several a game at minimum. Guys are not only physically stronger, they're way faster and quicker... guys like Russell Westbrook would have a field day. It'd be painful to watch if the mens team actually did play rather than treat it as a friendly match.
