Well I guess we will get a porn verification program soon here too, lol. It's groups in both the left and right who don't see sex as something good or healthy. When porn is considered more dangerous to the FL legislature then finding a way to protect people after several mass shootings in the state you have your answer. Sex is the hot topic from Hollywood to politics, it's all the rage. People may "talk" about it, but actually seeking it is more of the problem. Apps like Tinder and Grindr will soon have people declaring them as health concerns since STD rates have been on a rise. The good and bad have been lumped into one large sum in the convenience of getting people on board. Of course the pendulum will eventually swing the other way, and I am curious to see how that plays out?

The sponsor of the bill was a Republican (Rep. Wagner, Ann [R-MO-2]). It will be signed by a President who is Republican.

Regardless of the vote count, this is obviously a bill designed for PR benefits, to KO anyone who doesn't vote for it in the next election. On the other hand, if Democrats were in power it never would have gotten out of committee, and no one would have ever heard of it. This is Civics 101 and to the extent that people don't understand basic functioning of the government is why we've inherited this nihilistic shitshow.

All in the name of 'But it's to protect the children!'

Bathroom bills: To protect the children.

Delaware HB 35: To protect the children.

The Dems/libs are voting for this shit because in the current climate it is political suicide not to.

'Protecting the children' is the new third-rail of 'Merikan politics. Touch it and die.

Every one of these reams of fancy toilet paper is designed as a solution for problems that don't exist. Seriously, ever heard of a pimp using a credit card to buy advertising? Or buying advertising at all? Even if it's free, there's still an electronic paper trail. How many instances of trans people in public bathrooms assaulting anyone, or molesting children?

Post some examples (And show your work). I've got a newspaper to read while I wait for the answers.

I swore I'd never use a site for which murders had been named, but I found a nice local masseuse that gets the kinks out (As it were) when I got curious one night. It was mostly just personals, and he didn't post as a professional, but I didn't just fall off the turnip boat yesterday so it's easily assumed.

What this legislation does is make that assumption as a legal accusation. An innocent f4m personal, seeking just a simple, social meet-up, can fry a site just for allowing 'Educated woman, 29, seeks gentleman for dinner and conversation. Let's see what happens.'. The Grundys will read 'Let's see what happens' as 'Bring cash 'cuz this kitty ain't cheap' while the intent might be little more than a second dinner date.

Both FOSTA and SESTA were written and introduced by republicans. However, it got support from both republicans and democrats. It was passed for nothing more than to protect children from sex trafficking on the internet. Although I have to say that I have never seen an ad online offering underage children for sex and money, nor have any of the providers I have used been under age. That's not to say that it doesn't exist. It probably does and I have just not seen it. Because of that I can only speculate that this is one of those do nothing laws that make our lawmakers pat each other on the back so they can all say they care about children. What a waste of time and taxpayer money.

Unfortunately, the sex industry is the ultimate easy target because of hypocrisy. Even though a significant percentage of the population (including politicians) uses its services, nobody wants to be seen defending it publicly. If any other similar-sized industry was similarly affected by poorly-targeted legislation there would be a storm of opposition. But how many people are willing to call their representatives and complain about losing access to escort ads and reviews.

The point spreads on the NCAA college basketball games are printed in newspapers and openly discussed on ESPN but if I placed a wager with a bookmaker in New York City we’d both be breaking the law. But in Nevada and Costa Rica the activity is s booming legal business.
And the players are college students who are not allowed to be compensated even though their coaches make $5 million per year...but that’s for another show.

It can't last long and the sites are overreacting as the bills are only aimed at those who are complicit in sex trafficking.

Clearly you've not read the actual Bill. The language they used to get folks on board the bill was "protect our children" but the law was so broadly written it can, and will, be used to reach further than people are expecting.

We're watching history repeat itself. There are tons of parallels to Prohibition in terms of how they got people on board to pass it and how it will be used.

Stavros
03-30-2018, 05:34 PM
As Wendy has pointed out above, the core of the Bill is the protection of children, and I don't think anyone who posts to Hung Angels has a problem with that. But as she says, this core issue is sweeping up a lot of consensual activity, as well as challenging the act and legality of 'free speech' in the USA as defined by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

I believe the US is in the position on this issue because of decades of campaigning for a 'Christian' concept of morality that is associated with the 'Moral Majority' movement that, along with other Christian groups emerged in the 1970s to combat what they saw as a decline in morals that began in the 1960s. Charles Murray's relentless attacks on Welfare, and the attacks on the Civil Rights movement through voter suppression are also part of this.

But just as the positive reaction to the massacre at Parkland has raised the question -Should the 2nd Amendment be repealed?- so this issue, because it is both about morality and Constitutional law, raise the question -Should US law be defined by Christians? Which in this case, means Christians of the kind one finds in the US who often seem to believe in and act differently from Christians elsewhere, except in parts of Africa that have been 'turned' by US Evangelicals.

Who then is going to argue against this law by attacking Evangelical Christians and related religious groups? This is, at least, one thread of enquiry that I think politicians are wary of. It is one thing to maintain the Constitutional separation of religion from the State, but quite another to attack Christians who want to join the two together. Thus religion, supposedly removed from the political sphere, is now embedded in it, and you need to debate it.

There is a new article on this in today's Guardian, with Hung Angels briefly mentioned-
