Foley's resignation sends GOP scrambling
By BRENDAN FARRINGTON, Associated Press Writer
Sat Sep 30, 4:11 PM ET

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - In a scandal guaranteed to anger parents, a prominent House Republican has resigned after the revelation that he exchanged raunchy electronic messages with a teenage boy, a former congressional page.

Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record), R-Fla., who is single, apologized Friday for letting down his family and constituents. His resignation letter was read to the House late Friday afternoon, and hours later, Foley's former colleagues engineered a vote to let the House ethics committee decide whether an investigation is needed.

In Florida, the news sent Republicans scrambling for a replacement candidate six weeks before the election, while Democrats found themselves suddenly competitive in a district where Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in.

Sen. John Kerry was headlining a fundraiser Saturday in Florida to help the Democratic candidate, Tim Mahoney, and other state Democrats. But Kerry said the event would be about the issues, not Foley's resignation.

"Folks in Florida will make their own decision about that," Kerry said Friday.

Foley's resignation further complicates the political landscape for Republicans, who are fighting to retain control of Congress. Democrats need to win a net of 15 Republican seats to regain the power they lost in 1994.

Florida Republicans planned to meet as soon as Monday to name a replacement in Foley's district, which President Bush won with 55 percent in 2004 and is now in play for November. Though Florida ballots have already been printed with Foley's name and cannot be changed, any votes for Foley will count toward the party's choice.

At the Capitol, Republicans spent the night trying to explain how this could have happened on their watch.

Among the explanations during the night:

_The congressional sponsor of the page, Rep. Rodney Alexander (news, bio, voting record), R-La., said he was asked by the youth's parents not to pursue the matter, so he dropped it.

_Alexander said that before deciding to end his involvement, he passed on what he knew to the chairman of the House Republican campaign organization, Rep. Thomas Reynolds (news, bio, voting record), R-N.Y. Reynolds' spokesman, Carl Forti, said the campaign chairman also took no action in deference to the parents' wishes.

_Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., chairman of the Page Board that oversees the congressional work-study program for high schoolers, said he did investigate but Foley falsely assured him he was only mentoring the boy. Pages are high school students who attend classes under congressional supervision and work as messengers.

_The spokesman for Speaker Dennis Hastert, Ron Bonjean, said the top House Republican had not known about the allegations. Shimkus said he learned about them in late 2005.

Just as Shimkus' explanation was released, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California proposed to the House that its ethics committee investigate and make a preliminary report in 10 days. She demanded to know who knew of the messages, whether Foley had other contacts with pages and when the Republican leadership was notified of Foley's conduct.

Instead, majority Republicans engineered a vote to allow the ethics panel to decide whether there should even be an investigation.

Hastert said Friday he had asked Shimkus to investigate the page system. "We want to make sure that all our pages are safe and the page system is safe," Hastert said.

ABC News reported Friday that Foley also engaged in a series of sexually explicit instant messages with current and former pages, all male. In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page, "Do I make you a little horny?"

In another message, Foley wrote, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get relaxed."

Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect.

"We track library books better than we do sexual predators," Foley has said.

Foley, who represented an area around Palm Beach County, e-mailed the page in August 2005. The boy was 16 at the time. Foley asked him how he was doing after Hurricane Katrina and what he wanted for his birthday. The congressman also asked the boy to send a photo of himself, according to excerpts of the e-mails that were originally released by ABC News.

The e-mails were posted Friday on the Web site of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington after ABC News reported their existence.

Naomi Seligman, a spokeswoman for CREW, said the group also sent a letter to the FBI after it received the e-mails. CREW did not post their copies of the e-mail until ABC News reported them, instead waiting for the investigation.

"The House of Representatives has an obligation to protect the teenagers who come to Congress to learn about the legislative process," the group wrote.

According to the CREW posting, the boy e-mailed a colleague in Alexander's office about Foley's e-mails, saying, "This freaked me out." On the request for a photo, the boy repeated the word "sick" 13 times.

He said Foley asked for his e-mail when the boy gave him a thank-you card. The boy also said Foley wrote that he had e-mailed another page.

"he's such a nice guy," Foley wrote about the other boy. "acts much older than his age...and hes in really great shape...i am just finished riding my bike on a 25 mile journey now heading to the gym...whats school like for you this year?"

In other e-mails, Foley wrote: "I am back in Florida now...its nice here...been raining today...it sounds like you will have some fun over the next few weeks...how old are you now?" and "how are you weathering the hurricane...are you safe...send me an email pic of you as well."

How Mark Foley Represents The Entire Republican Party

Yesterday, Mark Foley the Republican Representative from Florida resigned from Congress. He had been caught sending dirty email messages to an underage Congressional page. One of the texts went like this:

"What are ya wearing?" - Republican Congressional Representative Mark Foley
"Tshirts and shorts." - Teenage boy
"Love to slip them off of you." - Republican Congressional Representative Mark Foley

Here's some things about Mark Foley. He had led Congressional efforts to protect children. He started a restaurant when he was only 20 years old. He was named a deputy whip by disgraced Republican Congressman Tom DeLay. He was a frequent guest on Bill O'Reilly. His name will still be on the ballot representing Republicans in the election this November.

What's illuminating here is not that a pedophile held Congressional office. That's just sad and awful, especially for the children he took advantage of and exploited. What's illuminating is the Congressman's behavior. Sending text messages and emails? As if he could never be caught; as if he was invulnerable. And it's exactly the kind of arrogance and poor judgement that has come to dominate the Republican Party. Like Bob Ney and Duke Cunningham who brazenly accepted bribes and illegal campaign contributions. Same with Tom DeLay. Worse, like George Bush and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, tirelessly insisting we're winning, things are getting better in Iraq, when anybody can see they're getting worse. As if the truth won't come out. It's a culture of corruption that believes it can never get caught.

The Republican Party (which turns out to have known about Foley's indiscretions for months) has become the nexus for bad judgement, criminality, hubris, and lies. Mark Foley got caught not because he's a pedophile, but because he's a dumb pedophile. Cunningham and Ney are doing jail time not because they took bribes but because they were blatant, too sure of themselves. It's the same kind of thinking that has turned everything else in this administration so bad.

Mark Foley is a sad, sick individual and I'm not capable of feeling sympathy for those that prey on the young so I won't pretend to. Frankly, I know too many people that have never recovered after becoming victims to people like Mr. Foley. But beyond all of that is his ignorance, the fact that he would leave a paper trail straight to his congressional office- he is also a symbol of everything wrong with a Republican Party that has rotted from within.

Bullshit !

More plame/wilson bullshit from the lead bullshitter in here.Emails do not, in no way, equate to Rep. Gerry Studds (D-Mass.) who had engaged in sexual relationships with minors, specifically 17-year-old congressional pages. Now the Im`s. How did some anonymous blogger get the email correspondence which the boy’s parents had insisted be kept quiet. And how the blog site, which had virtually no posts and no traffic suddenly catch the attention of Foley’s opponent who immediately asked for an investigation. To what extent is Soros’ C.R.E.W involved.

What we do know for certain is this,Rep. Foley did not have sex with the minor, did not have sex with the young man in the Oval office, did not put him in a high level security position he was not qualified to handle after a major terrorist attack on the country, was not married at the time, did not run a prostitution ring from his apartment, did not turn his back on Congress when he was accused of having sex with a minor, did not run and get re-elected several times in a democratic stronghold after this news broke, Representative Foley no longer sits in Congress, and the page did not disappear and end up dead after an ongoing relationship with Representative Foley.

You`re a disgraced Plame/Wilson Big Liar.

You`re words dissolve into meaninglessness the moment they are typed.

When at a loss for any ideas, the bereft demoncrats go negative. The Fluffington post!?

Joe Wilson still post there ?

Foley is a pedophile? In the DSM III, it was simply defined as any sexual urges or fantasies toward a prepubescent child. In the DSM IV, the criteria were changed, so that the diagnosis could only be made if “the fantasies, urges, or behaviors cause clinically significant distress,” or some kind of impairment in social or occupational functioning. In other words, according to DSM-IV criteria, even if the boy had been underage, so long as Foley was not distressed or conflicted about his behavior, then he is entirely normal.

The DSM is written by the amoral left, people such as yourself. You`re such a dupe and sock puppet one has to wonder if you even graduated high school.

So the democrats want to go to war on the homosexual issue!?

Want to go the slime route simply because they are bereft of ideas?

The propaganda arm of the DNC,the NY Times is getting cold feet already:

Former Pages Describe Foley as Caring Ally

By RACHEL L. SWARNS
Published: October 2, 2006

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 — In the hierarchy of Congress, the high school students who serve as Congressional pages fall somewhere near the bottom, seemingly invisible as they scurry through the hallways of the Capitol ferrying messages to powerful lawmakers who often fail to give them a second glance.

In that rarefied world, Representative Mark Foley, the silver-haired Republican from Florida, stood out.

He took pains to befriend the 16- and 17-year-old aides, several former pages said in interviews on Sunday. He chatted with them on the House floor, they said, sent handwritten notes and urged them to keep in touch when they left Washington for their hometowns.

In 2002, he even stood up on the floor of the House, his eyes welling with tears, and commended the young men and women for their year of service. In his speech, Mr. Foley mentioned several of the high school students by name, describing a handwritten note to celebrate one young man’s graduation and a lunch with another at Morton’s steak house.

Ashley Gallo, a 21-year-old former page who is now a senior at Western Michigan University, said on Sunday that many of her friends had viewed Mr. Foley as one of the few lawmakers who made a real effort to reach out to young people.

“You didn’t have a lot of interaction with the members because most of them treated you like a kid, but he was pretty friendly,” said Ms. Gallo, who served as a page in 2001. “He would talk to people,” she said.

“He would say, ‘Here’s my e-mail address if you want to keep in touch.’ I don’t think anyone thought anything of it. They saw him as a mentor or a reference.” ...

The emails were inappropriate. THe IM`s of which i`ve already mentioned is another thing and brings up many questions.

Did the family of the teenager authorized the revelation of the instant messages, i.e., whether their privacy rights were violated, and it would appear the family didn't authorize the release since we've yet to hear from them.

Who had the instant messages, when did they received them, from who did they received them, and how did they became public only now?

Just like the Wislon Plame Big Lie the left wing media know who and what are behind the timing of the Foley revelation and are protecting that aspect of the story to prevent the complete facts from becoming public until after the election.

What did Soros` CREW know and when did it know it?

So the democrats want to go to war on the homosexual issue!?

Who's going to war on the homosexual issue? It appears that you are wrong again...

Nice try, stooge... but no cigar. The fact is that this is about a hypocritical piece of shit named Tom Foley attempting to seduce minors. Minors who he was in a position of authority over.

Family Research Council: Blame "the gay" for Foleygate

You all remember the Family Research Council, right? They're the ultra-conservative culture warriors who were founded by James Dobson back in the Reagan era and are now headed up by Tony Perkins (not the "Psycho" Tony Perkins...well. not exactly). They're the ones who want to ban hotel porn and who have this thing about homosexuality, to the point where they believe that TV's Sponge Bob SquarePants is gay. They were here in Philly earlier this year to hype then-future Supreme Sam Alito at "Justice Sunday III," with Sen. Rick Santorum seated at their right hand.

Well, this whole Rep. Mark Foley page scandal is what Ned Flanders might call "a dilly of a pickle" for the FRC. Foley's emails to young male pages are the type of immoral behavior that is, in theory, the group's raison d' etre, when in fact their real purpose is to make sure their GOP allies retain control of Washington.

Since the Foley mess has gotten too big for them to keep their mouth shut -- the preferred course of action -- they have fallen back on Plan B.

Blame "the gay."

Tonight, the FRC sends us this email:

Democrats seeking to exploit the resignation of Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) are right to criticize the slow response of Republican congressional leaders to his communications with male pages. But neither party seems likely to address the real issue, which is the link between homosexuality and child sexual abuse. Foley, an unmarried 52-year-old representative, had always refused to answer questions about his sexual orientation. Now that his emails and messages to teenage male pages have been revealed, it appears clear that Foley is a homosexual with a particular attraction to underage boys. While pro-homosexual activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. Although almost all child molesters are male and less than 3% of men are homosexual, about a third of all child sex abuse cases involve men molesting boys--and in one study, 86% of such men identified themselves as homosexual or bisexual. Ignoring this reality got the Catholic Church into trouble over abusive priests, and now it is doing the same to the House GOP leadership. They discounted or downplayed earlier reports concerning Foley's behavior--probably because they did not want to appear "homophobic." The Foley scandal shows what happens when political correctness is put ahead of protecting children.

Frankly, we're trying to think of one thing that the GOP leadership in D.C. has ever done to not appear "homophobic" -- we'll do an update if we think of one. In the meantime, we can tell you that the scandal here is not one of political correctness, but political self-preservation run amok. Neither party has a corner on morality when it comes to the individual sins of its members; but the Republicans running the show in Congress went to great lengths to keep the lid on the Foley scandal, to save a safe seat in a tough election, and maybe to have some, ahem, "leverage" on Foley on close votes.

In doing so, they have handed Democrats something the Democrats themselves had been incapable of thinking up, a slogan for the fall election: "Republicans Wanted to Protect Their Jobs Before They Protected Your Children."

Foley's Showdown With ABC

On Friday afternoon, a strategist for Rep. Mark Foley tried to cut a deal with ABC's Brian Ross.

The correspondent, who had dozens of instant messages that Foley sent to teenage House pages, had asked to interview the Florida Republican. Foley's former chief of staff said the congressman was quitting and that Ross could have that information exclusively if he agreed not to publish the raw, sexually explicit messages.

"I said we're not making any deals," Ross recalls. He says the Internet made the story possible, because on Thursday he posted a story on his ABC Web page, the Blotter, after obtaining one milder e-mail that Foley had sent a 16-year-old page, asking for a picture. Within two hours, former pages had e-mailed Ross and provided the salacious messages. The only question then, says Ross, was "whether this could be authenticated."

The St. Petersburg Times last fall obtained the earlier e-mail, asking the 16-year-old for a picture, and interviewed the boy, who wrote a friend that he considered the message "sick." But the boy would not go on the record.

Executive Editor Neil Brown says the paper's policy against making accusations based on unnamed sources was a factor. "We just didn't feel like we had the story," he says. "We had a lot of stuff implied. . . . If I had it to do over again, I think we probably would have been more organized about pursuing it. But hindsight is 20/20."

The paper did interview Foley, who assured a reporter that the e-mail exchange was innocent, Brown says.

Three More Former Pages Accuse Foley of Online Sexual Approaches
October 05, 2006 5:20 PM

Three more former congressional pages have come forward to reveal what they call "sexual approaches" over the Internet from former Congressman Mark Foley.

The pages served in the classes of 1998, 2000 and 2002. They independently approached ABC News after the Foley resignation through the Brian Ross & the Investigative Team's tip line on ABCNews.com. None wanted their names used because of the sensitive nature of the communications.

"I was seventeen years old and just returned to [my home state] when Foley began to e-mail me, asking if I had ever seen my page roommates naked and how big their penises were," said the page in the 2002 class.

The former page also said Foley told him that if he happened to be in Washington, D.C., he could stay at Foley's home if he "would engage in oral sex" with Foley.

The page told ABC News he was interviewed this week by FBI agents who had a six-page list of questions about Foley and the exchanges.

The second page who talked with ABC News, a graduate of the 2000 page class, says Foley actually visited the old page dorm and offered rides to events in his BMW.

"His e-mails developed into sexually explicit conversations, and he asked me for photographs of my erect penis," the former page said.

The page said Foley maintained e-mail contact with him even after he started college and arranged a sexual liaison after the page had turned 18.

The third page interviewed by ABC News, a graduate of the 1998 page class, said Foley's instant messages began while he was a senior in high school.

"Foley would say he was sitting in his boxers and ask what I was wearing," the page said.

"It became more weird, and I stopped responding," the page said.

All three pages described similar instant message and e-mail patterns, with remarkably similar escalations of provocative questions.

"He didn't want to talk about politics," the page said. "He wanted to talk about sex or my penis," the page said.

The three new verbal accounts are in addition to two sets of sexually explicit instant messages provided to ABC News by former pages.

An online story on the Drudge Report Thursday claimed one set of the sexually explicit instant messages obtained by ABC News was part of a "prank" on the part of the former page, who reportedly says he goaded the congressman into writing the messages.

"This was no prank," said one of the three former pages who talked to ABC News today about his experience with the congressman.

10/6/06

****
The FBI has contacted a former congressional page from Kentucky as part of the burgeoning investigation, said Daniel London, chief of staff to Rep. Ron Lewis (news, bio, voting record), R-Ky., who sponsored the teen.

Attorneys for the Justice Department and the House negotiated on how to give investigators access to Foley's files without inciting a legal battle like the one after the FBI raided the office of Rep. William Jefferson (news, bio, voting record), D-La., earlier this year.

Ex-Foley chief of staff Kirk Fordham met with the FBI. Fordham emerged as a key figure Wednesday when he told reporters that he had talked three years ago with top aides to Hastert about Foley's conduct with pages.

Fordham's version directly contradicts an account issued by Hastert's office on Saturday, saying the speaker's staff only learned of an "over-friendly" e-mail exchange between Foley and a single page. Hastert's top aide, Scott Palmer, denies that Fordham warned top GOP aides of Foley and inappropriate conduct with other pages.

Foley, 52, stepped down Friday after he was confronted with sexually explicit electronic messages he had sent teenage male pages and promptly checked into an alcohol rehabilitation clinic. Through his lawyer, he has said he is gay but denied any sexual contact with minors.

Hastert, meanwhile, is holding to his assertion that he did not know about messages sent by Foley to a former House page until the scandal broke last week.

He issued a less than ringing endorsement of his staff and Rep. John Shimkus (news, bio, voting record), R-Ill., chairman of the board that overseas the page program.

Shimkus admonished Foley to cease contact with the former page, a Louisiana teen. The matter ended there instead of being pursued in a way that might have led to the far more lurid messages sent to other former pages.

And now you fail to apply critically thinking and read the laws pertaining to consent in DC.

Fuck you`re stupid  What and how does one prove an IM crossed the boundries of DC. They may or may not have technically.Irregardless, read a little dufus before you make a complete jack-ass of yourself:

Sock puppet brain dead zombie nonsense.

There is no FBI "investigation".

The FBI said over the weekend that it had begun a preliminary assessment to determine whether Mr. Foley violated the law when he sent sexually explicit instant messages three years ago to at least one teenage congressional pagehtt/washingtontimes.com/national/20061005-114612-7581r.htm

The vast neo-marxist left wing Soros conspiracy machine is being found out. The Soros funded CREW gang had in their possession, the emails, as far back as April.

Law enforcement officials said then that the e-mails did not provide enough evidence of a possible crime to warrant a full investigation. In the e-mails, Foley praises the physical attributes of one page and asks another teenager for his picture.

In subsequent days, unidentified Justice and FBI officials told reporters that the e-mails provided by CREW were heavily redacted and that the group refused to provide unedited versions to the FBI. One law enforcement official -- speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation -- also told The Washington Post the FBI believed that CREW may have received the e-mails as early as April and that the group refused to tell the FBI how they were obtained.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse declined to comment on that issue but defended the FBI's handling of the original e-mails: "The e-mails, while inappropriate, did not contain a criminal predicate to allow the FBI to move forward in an investigation.

The dispute is the latest controversy this week for CREW, a liberal-leaning group that has come under attack from House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and other Republicans because it has received money from a foundation funded by liberal financier George Soros."

Why no investigation concerning emails?

Because the age of consent in DC is 16

THE QUESTION NOW IS,

IS CHEFMIKE A GAY-BASHER HOMOPHOBE AND

SHOULD HE BE BANNED FROM H.A.?

This scandal shows how Republicans are more worried about keeping their power than they are protecting innocent children. Politics over children. Where are the values and morals that the Republicans continue to talk about?

Matt Drudge blames the children for egging on Foley (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/10/02/matt-drudge-blames-the-kids-for-predatorgate-they-are-16-and-17-year-old-beasts/)

Is this the new lib-sissy strategy?

Throw out hysterical theory and then post non-sensical, hysterical link?

Between the sock puppet and you, I'm beginning to believe it.

Surprised GOP Reacts-Thought Child Molestor Would Be 'Greeted As Liberator'

RJ Eskow

Welcome to another episode of "GOP/SVU: Special Victims Unit."

In yet another sign of their confusion and desperation, the Republicans have brought in their shady Mr. Fixit to clean up the Foley mess. Looks like they didn't see this problem coming, and were caught so off-guard they had to call on the capo di tutti capi.

Maybe they expected their predatory Congressman to be welcomed with flowers by the children he molested.

Quelle surprise. He didn't even get a box of chocolates.

Instead these young people went searching for help everywhere, hoping the adults in charge would protect them and other kids from the predator. But the GOP leadership left them to fend for themselves and when outside help finally arrived, their media lackeys went on the attack - against the victims.

What's the best defense they've come up with so far? "Hey, we've been letting our guy molest these kids for years! Why bring it up now? Must be political."

That didn't go over as well as they had hoped. So here's their next move: They're bringing in Jim Baker to clean up. You'll remember former Secretary of State Baker. He's the guy they called when it became clear they lost the 2000 election fair and square. He "fixed" that little problem pretty well, and now they want him to fix this.

Baker's the Republican version of "Mr. Wolfe," the Harvey Keitel character in Pulp Fiction - the one they call when Tarantino gets blood and brains all over his girlfriend's car and leaves a corpse in the trunk. That's not a bad analogy for the GOP's current situation.

And what did Baker say about Mr. Hastert? He said that people are making Denny Hastert a "sacrificial lamb." He - along with the President's father and other members of the Republican crime family - are circling the wagons around the high school coach turned real estate investment genius. They live by the traditional Mafia oath of mutual protection above all else:

"Io voglio entrare in questa organizzazione per proteggere la mia famiglia e per proteggere I miei amici."

That means "I want to enter into this organization to protect my family and to protect all my friends."

You can see the code in action. The GOP leadership protected the child molester as long as they could. Now they're protecting the guy who protected the child molester. Their venality knows no end. It's like one of those Russian dolls. Open up a bad deed and there's always another one inside.

Here's a word to Mr. Baker: Hastert's no "sacrificial lamb." The "sacrificial lambs" are those kids your Party didn't mind seeing victimized over and over so you could win elections. And you haven't had the decency to stop your media minions from slandering them, ridiculing them, and invading their privacy. Denny's not a "lamb" at all. He's just another member of your ravenous pack of wolves.

Shame on him. Shame on all of you. Go home and grow some ethics, Jim.

As Mr. Wolfe says in Pulp Fiction: "If I was informed correctly, the clock is ticking ..."
