I kinda thought Hugh was going to live forever.lol

99% of men wished they lived the life Hefner did.
RIP Bunny King.

RIP an American Icon.

A man who put pretty girls on coffee tables around the world. In print that is.

Brooke Zanell and a reasonable facsimile of Hef.

Rest in peace Hef. You showed us how to live the live we all want. Thanks for giving writers of color a platform and for your support of jazz.

Very sad news indeed. Fortunately he lived a super long life and left nothing on the table. Men can only dream of living his life and making it to 91. What an icon.

Porn existed before Playboy, during it, and doesn't need airbrushed/photoshopped fantasy to survive it in a crowded market. The best you can say is that what Playboy started others did better. As for Hefner, the simple truth is that he was a pimp who sold his 'bunnies' to men with money, as I am sure the Billionaire Bunny-Bonker in the White House will gleefully confirm. Why else was he so keen to appear in Hefner's crap movies?

Pimp would imply Hefner received some kind of revenue from his models sleeping with men. There's no evidence that I know of that this ever happened.

What I do know is that Hefner was a hedonist and the reason why sooo many famous men wanted to hang around him is because he had THE best sex parties in Hollywood.

Sure, I bet some of his models got into prostitution, but it wasn't IMO at Hefner's direction.

Legendary feminist Gloria Steinem at one point worked as a Playboy bunny to write a story about Hefner in the 1960s.

If Hefner was pimping out his girls, I guarantee you dozens of them would have spilled the beans about it years later.

you know your life is painfully miserable when you masturbate to political news and the best you can say about a guy that transformed a sexual revolution is just some stuck up stupidity that sounds like it came from a failed pickup artist blog.

below was hugh hefner's life. yours can be summarized to just quoting articles from the guardian. he might be gone, but it's you who is dead

At the end of his life Hef was kind of pathetic, an elderly man trying to act like a teenager. But you have to give the man credit, not only for creating a business empire, but for living life his own way. “A lot of people go through life never quite understanding that if things aren't as wonderful as they should be, it's their own fault,” Hefner said in an interview with Esquire. He was absolutely right about that.

I knew his son. Really nice guy.

While porn was around for millenia prior to Hugh, he certainly played a huge role in making porn a more ubiquitous industry, and for helping open up sexuality in the mainstream more than it was.

He was also a huge fighter for minority rights as far back as the 50s.

I am very much alive and was never impressed by Playboy's plastic pseudo-porn. As for the Sexual Revolution, that, to me was a book published (in German) by Wilhelm Reich in 1936. If you had a genuine interest in the history of sex, from Roman bath-houses to the effeminates (mukhanathun) of Medina in the time of Muhammad, the rampant queers of the Qing dynasty in China, to the Molly Houses of London in the 17th century, to the Lesbian and trans-queer clubs in Paris and Berlin in the 1930s, to the (to me) fabulous transexual whores who plied their trade on the mean streets of Naples, Milan and Paris in the 1970s, you would recognize Hefner for the one-dimensional prick that he was. You are John Snow, and you know nothing.

Hugh gave porn an 'intellectual' gloss that made it okay to be seen buying it and reading it. I think that was his big contribution. People repeated the cliche that they bought Playboy for the articles not the pictures, and indeed Hugh paid very good authors and thinkers to write for his magazine. But in the end, Playboy essentially failed and Hugh became irrelevant when pornography could be downloaded for free on the internet. So much for reading it for the articles. Still, there's something to be said for someone who can get away with living their entire life wearing sexy bedroom attire, that's what I wanna do.

My teenage self owes Hef a debt of gratitude, that's for sure. Here's my question, why have we not seen a Trans-Woman on the front cover of Playboy, and as a Playmate yet? It's not as is there is some shortage of girls that are EVERY BIT as beautiful as the women who are already Playmates.

What books??

Again, suggesting Hefner was a pimp means more than a handful of incidents of rich and powerful men agreeing to exchange cash to sleep with one of his models.

Pimp would mean Hefner was basically running an escort agency, which he wasn't.

Hugh Hefner didn't own these girls and swapped them in and out of the Playboy mansion as soon as he could find a better looking, younger replacement.

yawn. nobody gives a shit what book you read or whatever you think you got out of it. perhaps if your head was further up your ass you would write less which, hopefully, is sooner rather than (for our sakes) later.

don't you have a daily telegraph (or is it daily mirror?) article to quote for your ritualistic political essay?

your dreams are dictated by other people's life. once you wake up, it will be a sobering, lonely and miserable world. just as it always has been for you.
but don't worry. it will be over quite soon. but you're used to that aren't you?

It was a simple point -whatever Hefner achieved with Playboy it was small, the 1950s was a dull decade and the interpretation of free speech in the US was not as broad as it has since become, and there are plenty of examples from history and geography of 'sexual revolution' -and the forces that wish to stop it, such as the arrests this week of LGBTQIAPN/B people in Azerbaijan, which I won't support with a reference from the Guardian as I am sure you know about it anyway. I was merely trying to put Playboy in a broader context. I never bought it, and still think the photo spreads are tame and airbrushed out of reality but I guess that is a matter of taste. Other than that I thank you for your support.

You don't have to agree with him, but your insults are getting repetitive. From your posts in the political section I gather you have a super interesting life that involves ordering champagne in the coach section of a plane while talking gibberish with a stranger. You're a regular man of mystery whose posts often descend into bad experimental writing (see above) and during lucid intervals insults that seemingly come out of nowhere. Whatever, you don't agree with his posts in this thread. Get over it....

a simple point nobody cares about (btw, that was the extent i read your reply). what made you think people believed pornography began with playboy, or to give these silly history lessons you think you're giving? does it make you feel important?

you're obviously not a very social person and you've mixed it with arrogance that's pretty delusional.

i'll give you some advice: next time you feel like saying something, don't.

now, kindly fuck off

Someone reading this may think you just attacked someone with one unpopular opinion but you stalk the guy's posts. You keep trying to convince us you're living the dream and yet...

Yet you literally wrote a post in the politics section telling a bunch of strangers that you had a conversation with a woman on a plane. Imagine being so repellent to the opposite sex that talking to a woman is an opportunity to brag.

And keep posting the Hef pictures. That's not you.....have another glass of champagne buddy and write some more dream sequences.

wait... you remember a post i made, but i'm the stalker? how does that work? do you have the full details of what i said to that babe? was it good times?

also, how did you know i wasn't hefner? i thought i was getting away with it and now you come and ruin everything

btw: instead of doing the back and forth here, why not do it in the political forum? don't you think you and your bff have derailed this enough? i'll do you a solid and keep you entertained for however long you want, and if you really really want, i even give you permission to go ham in the jill stein thread. my treat. i know how much this cheerleading means to you.

There was a time in the United States when pornography was considered illegal, immoral, obscene, and could be used as propaganda in the war against Communism. Hugh Hefner helped removed that stigma.

If you're a male of a certain age, you remember that thrill you had when you saw your first Playboy. Didn't matter if it was one in your father's nightstand or one you found it in the woods, it was a unofficial rite of passage.

Did pornography exist before Playboy? Yes. Was Playboy tame compared to other magazines like Hustler and High Society? Yes. But none of those facts and/or views diminish the impact that Hugh Hefner had on society. He was the right man and it was the right publication to help knock down walls of ignorance when it came to sex and sexuality in the United States.

i don't remember if playboy was my first porn, but i do remember the images of the centerfold- either bo derek or farrah fawcett (can't remember since i had a crush on both)- but i remember those images being crucified onto my brain like- being given a barometer and someone's pointing to the highest degree you can measure.

good thing cheryl ladd wasn't in playboy (was she?) otherwise i wouldn't have a dick today.

also: does anyone else find it funny that the guy that owns twinkies now owns the playboy mansion? i can already picture him right now walking through the mansion pointing at random pieces of art and furniture and going "all this just has to go!"
