2016 has been a poor year for feature films, crowded as it has been with comic book garbage and little else of interest. It is also the case that as I do not live in London and was unable to attend any major festivals there have been films not on general release I just did not see that might have made it to the shortlist.

The best film I saw of the new releases was Son of Saul (2015) but hardly a film to recommend as general viewing even though it manages -just- to make a feature film out of the Holocaust. Of films I had not seen before, Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) was the best and is a film I shall return to several times. Of the documentaries the study of Janis Joplin -Janis: Little Girl Blue (2015) was memorable and is worth seeing both for the tragic story of Joplin and as a portrait of the 1960s and early 1970s that was such a radical moment when popular music fused with folk, blues, rock and Jazz and anything seemed possible, and desirable.

I don't know anything about video games.
