Just noticed these ads for "gluten free vodka " and other spirits .
http://www.glutenista.com/gluten-free-liquor-list.html
I also find it vaguely insulting . As anyone exposed to middle school level science would know , distillation leaves behind heavy molecules , gluten is a protein , proteins are orders of magnitude larger than non organic molecules like alcohol. Yet this gluten free mania trumps education.:soapbox

This is so patently absurd it reminds me of a "South Park " episode . Like their recent "Whole Foods" and "Politically Correct " series.

You posted a link to a list of gluten-free liquors from a gluten-free blogger. She's just posting stuff that doesn't have gluten.

Gluten free Vodka isn't a new thing. A lot of Vodka has always been distilled from Potatoes. It is a new marketing angle though.

And you're an expert on marketing, aren't you? Do your Truvada masters encourage you to post about non-Truvada related topics? Or perhaps they plan on releasing gluten-free Truvada soon? What about Gluten-free vodka infused with Truvada? That could be a real good one: get drunk and have worry-free bareback sex!

That's an awesome idea! I mean, surely all those drunk people would remember to put on a condom! Eye roll.

Nice to see Ben Miller in that ad , loved him in the first season of " Death in Paradise".
My whole point is that regardless of weather the alcohol is distilled from potatoes , wheat , cane or rye there is no gluten that survives the distillation process. So the whole 'gluten free' thing is just a marketing hoax.
Furthermore , gluten intolerance only affects 0.5 to 13 % of the population , with greater prevalence in people with Asian than European ancestry . It is something that most of us needn't be concerned about.

Actually, distillation of vodka began long before the potato even arrived in Europe and, in fact, very little vodka is made from potatoes.

There's an interesting article about it here, though the short version is we won't know until some research is done.

Intrigued by this subject, I grabbed a bottle of Tito's off my shelf to see what's in it (I buy 4 bottles at a time to make sure I don't run out)
It's made in Austin Texas, entirely from corn. I've consumed Absolut for 25 years (grain-based) and love it for its smooth clean taste but why buy foreign it I can get equal quality made in America?
And as sukumvit boy points out, the gluten angle is totally bogus. Have you ever tried a guten-free bagel?

I think the only shred of relevance, and I believe it is in Laphroaig's verywell link, is that even after distillation there may be minute traces of gluten that affect hyper-sensitive sufferers.

In the days when I could get it and was a regular Vodka drinker, the Polish brand Wybrowa was my favourite. It then almost disappeared from the shelves in the UK as the plant in Poznan in the 1990s almost went bankrupt; I haven't seen it since but have not looked for it either. Grey Goose may be gluten-free but I wonder if it is glue-free, as there is something utterly repellent about this concoction from a country that ought to -and for so many other drinks, does- know better. Absolut is reliable if boring, but there is an Icelandic Vodka available in Waitrose I would like to taste, and the Russian export vodka, Beluga proved elusive as I bought it on special offer in Moscow a few years ago and gave it to a friend who finished it off before I could try it!

And here is a mildly interesting report of a vodka taste test in the Blue Fin, in New York City in 2007-

Grey Goose is the smoothest and most flexible vodka I've ever had. The next best was a Ukrainian vodka brought from Ukraine by a colleague that's not available in North America and whose name I have long forgotten. Wyborowa and Russian Standard are really good straight from the freezer. Chopin is an acquired taste good when taken with heavy food. Absolut, Smirnoff Triple Distilled, and Stoli are good for my favourite martini: burnt. That is a vodka martini poured into a glass that was 'burnt' with a dash of Jack Daniels and enhanced with a couple garlic-stuffed olives. For something a little differentŻubrówka buffalo grass infused vodka with a splash of apple juice is outstanding on a hot day.

Cheers and mind your liver!

Yes , Tito's is excellent . I first found it when it appeared in my neighborhood Trader Joe's about 6 or 8 years ago.

Yes , my vodka aficionado friends all say Grey Goose is the best. When it comes to martinis I still prefer gin, Bombay.
